anybody that does lots of flash design will tell you, flash is a pain in the ass when it comes to type... granted, using your font of choice is great for design, and a huge improvement over html's font families, but flash has lot's of problems with text rendering, sometimes smoothing too much or sub pixel positioning quirks. these issues can be avoided, but still photoshop, for example, renders much better looking type.
I guess when we get flash's new text rendering engineon the next flash player version, this will improve...
if you haven't already, check out sepy. its an oss as editor, writen in python and it rocks. it has been developed for a longer time than the as2 plugin, and is much more mature (has code folding etc). at this point its hard to find missing features.
oh, and its much lighter than eclipse. (and in case you're wondering, yes you can compile with mtasc too)
evolution does not need a purpose. it has laws, like natural selection. the whole idea of evolution is to create diversity and the best adapted outsprings will survive.
dont want to troll, just saying that trying to guide this newspeak is useless too. if it turns out to be useful (and it probably is)it is here to stay.
I am beginning my self, and I can tell you what I am doing:
dont worry too much about the language at first. after you learn to program in general, learning a new language will become more or less trivial.
I surely recomend python. its great for beginners and you will be very productive with it.and it should give you the 'coding itch' this book is great for beginners.. stay out of C and C++ as your first language though.
ok the bots are cool. very cool.
but when will carmakers use all this tech they are apparently researching into actual cars.
fact is, we've been driving (almost) the same old pieces of junk.
cars should improve much faster than they have been.
we are waiting.
well, I just said: would work all day (15 hours have been a long time constant)
beign able to work on something without imediate financial compensation is great and has helped a great lot of hackers to acomplish great stuff (linus was leaving with his mom - no bills to pay, stallman worked in a university and now works for a foundation, etc)
being able to go to a beach a couple of weeks everyear, and have a setup to work from there is far from impossible (when developing java , for example, gosling et al stay in a beautiful place in aspen, etc).
I am not saying I got what it takes. I am just saying that since I am a workaholic and work 15 hours a day (no weekends at all) and will probably be do it for a long time, it would be great to have less financial pressure and be able to work on projects that interested me the most.
not really live your life as you please can mean many different things.
for me it would mean to keep working a lot (total workaholic) but be able to do so in projects that dont give me any money. I live in a 3rd world country and with the hour rate I get paid, I have very little time to work on non paying stuff.
it would also mean a simple beach house where I could take my box and code from there (with a nice salt water dive every afternoon)
I stuble across many articles on ibm developers network about python. seems like a lot of ibm hackers like it, but I never see the big blue showing any corporate support. is this a 'we do not want to upset java' thing, or is python imature for hard core web programming?
But there are other ways to help (specially if you are an american citzen).
One great way is to make sure you vote / pressure you legislators / presidents towards broader / better foreing policy. For example, Brazil has held long disputes with the wto for the usa to stop anti competitive measures, such as heavy agricultural subsidies. There is much talk about open economies, but many developed countries put a lot of barries for third world countries to make a fair competition.
sorry for the lack of originality . i will try to improve next time.
cliches aside, this is kind of a self reflection post though. i run a small design studio here with 3 boxes. two of windows and one linux. i need windows software (photoshop, illustator, flash) there are no linux alternatives to these, it would be like changing emacs for wordpad. and wine well, i wont even bother...
but the fact is my windows box got screwed twice in the first blaster and my linux one has never given my any headaches. i wish I could find a better solution for this (besides the $$$$ mac possibility, of course) sure the are no silver bullets, but my linux box just doesnt need much caring as the windows ones, and that upsets me. not everybody is running a large scale enterprise 3000 terminals network, and for some folks, linux is much less maintanance.
just goggle 'who is peter norvig' .

I wouldn't.

excuse my ignorance: is there no video screen capture for linux?
I mean, they did go through all this work to make something look good and then released these crappy monitor shots?
if signatures were actually needed you wouldn't be able to use your credit card to buy through the telephone or do any online shopping.

esr's how to become a hacker is the best advice I can think of.

yes yes, the robots are cool.
distance plays a big role on this. from a distance (6 feet +) you can usually spot flickering monitors very easily.
In this paper, he proposes the Elephant language that can refer to the past in computer programs.
Pretty cool stuff!

well, that depends.
if your goal is to become a multi billion dollar business person. ok, point taken.
if all you want is a few millions to live your life as you please, then one 50 million sell is more than enough.
by his essays, I dont think his target audience is the former, actually more like the later.
cheers
well, he sold his company for yahoo for (i think) 50 million dollars, or some other pretty high amount. if that is not successfull , what then?

Of course giving money can make a difference.

because they are still bulky and pretty useless...
... getting ready to run longhorn?
I would've like to hear his take on it.
it is open source now, and they do garantee it to be safe from ip lawsuits.
