Four-Story Pixellated Mario Mural
MasterPlaid writes "A group of anonymous cowards (eningeers) has apparently constructed a four-story mural of scenes from the NES Super Mario games. The best part is, they did the whole thing out of Post-It Notes, recreating the wondeful pixellated goodness we expect from Super Mario. The idea for this mural seems to have originated in the Strong Bad email of the same name."
Let's do something like this with the side of a building. I'm tired of playing tetris on commercial skyscrapers. Time for some side-scrolling action!

My kid is suddenly very into it, heard about from a friend, and it is worrying me. I've been to the site and it just looks like a bunch of crap in Flash. Moderate bad language no real substance and no obvious means of generating revenue (Always suspicious in a commercial site.).
What gives?

The idea for this mural seems to have originated in the Strong Bad email of the same name.
Um, I've seen all the SBemails, and I don't get this reference. There is no SBemail called "mural" or "Post-it". Post-its are used occasionally , and a mural was mentioned once though. There also was a "hack" at MIT involving a SBemail.
Anyone care to explain that reference?
You probably shouldn't click this.

I was just saying that if you think something like this is cool, you should just wander the halls of a lot of campuses and you'll see work done on doors and hallways that's as impressive. I guess that's not a very productive comment. And the more I reflect, maybe it's not even true.
(note: Oh, wow, my first negative moderation in something like four years on slashdot.
Granted, it's also the first time I've made a "this is a pointless story" comment, so I guess it's fair. But I've never been quite clear what the "redundant" moderation means.)

I believe the pipes don't freeze because the water is warm. And the ice is a big insulating layer between that and the deep-below-freezing Alaskan air. There's a moist cavity at the top where the stuff sprays out.

crappy sequel 'Sumper Mario Brothers 2' that according to rumors wasn't even created by nintendo (rumor has it that they just bought some game, changed the graphics and released it in Europe and USA as SMB2)
Rumors, nuthin'. It's well documented fact that Nintendo thought that the Japanese SMB2 wouldn't go over well in the US market -- the graphics were basically identical to the first game, which was by then several years old, and the sequel was more difficult, which would have been discouraging to the US market's large percentage of child gamers.
So Nintendo purchased the rights to another Japanese release, a disk-based game with a vaguely Arabian theme called Doki Doki Panic, and modified it to create the US version of SMB2. It was more than a mere graphics hack, too -- the music and some of the gameplay basics were altered as well, for example the original game did not allow the player to run faster than normal by holding down B.
Maybe they can make a Post-It portrait of the Thnikkaman next. Oh, the things that man does...

There are no barrels in this pic. There are no
falling barrels in the game from which this
pic is taken. You're thinking of Donky Kong,
which was the first game Mario appeared in.
This scene is from the origional Super Mario
Bros. I'm a very long time fan/addict of SMB.
I don't remember any SMB game with falling
barrels anywhere in it.
The falling object in this scene is a
Sharpea. Sharpea is a little fella that
hits the ground and walks back and
forth until you kill him, he kills you,
or he falls off a cliff. Sharpea is a small
creature with a spiked shell. Please don't
insult Sharpea by calling him a barrel.
The guy (some say turtle, but I'm not so sure)
that flies back and forth throwing Sharpeas
at you is called Lakipea. Damnit, I forgot my
informative tag and my nit-pick tag.
Still, your post was funny and I'd mod it as
such had I mod points.

In terms of foul language, Strongbad uses the word "crap" a lot in the early sbemail episodes.
I imagine that's what's being referred to as "moderately bad language".
Other than that, I don't remember any other swear words being used. Just crap.

The Modern Art Museum (or whatever) in DC was cool - there are a bunch of interesting exhibits. But the room with the yellow square on the floor? Wow, "art"!
A good rule of thumb - if you have to explain it, it ain't art.
Stop trying to act all knowledgeable, because it makes you look dumb. It's not a "rumor." It's been common knowledge for over a decade. The US Super Mario Bros. 2 is based on Doki Doki Panic. "rumor has it" Hahaha. Did you just randomly decide it was a rumor or something?

I did something like this on the back wall of my seventh grade art class, and I got in trouble for it. Genious artist are always before their time. Ms. Stranugle, if you're out there, I told you it was art.
I stand corrected. Lakipea does in fact throw sharpeas like I said, but this picture was actually a Lakitu like you said. Actually though, Lakitu's throw Spiny Eggs, not Spineys. Spiny Eggs turn into Spinys when they hit the ground, but they're just eggs when Lakitu throws them. Lakipea on the other hand throws Sharpeas, not Sharpea Eggs. There are no Sharpea Eggs AFAIK. Anyway, you were correct that the pic in question is in fact a Lakitu, not a Lakipea.

I just bought 2100 Post-It Notes(r) from Costco, I think it was about $11.
They used "~3800" for this artwork... Even if it were 5x the cost isn't that only $100.
Define "expensive"? Maybe it was a joke, but divide the expenses among the "12 people" involved and I hardly find it "expensive".
Now, if they get caught and charged with some sort of criminal littering offense, that's expensive! (And wasn't there some sort of law passed against "destroying art?" - hmm, maybe this needs to stay up...)
This issue is a bit more complicated than you think.
I just hope no one Burninates it....... cuz the Trogdor comes in the night!!!!
Insert Pithy Quote here.
Which was actually released later in japan as Super Mario Brothers USA, and was quite popular.
I wouldn't consider SMB2 to be crappy. The whole pick-up-and-throw mechanic was quite original. It's the only non-party Super Mario Brothers game where you can play as Mario, Luigi, Toad, or the Princess. Throwing bombs, riding projectiles across pits before picking them up and throwing them at bosses, the dark universe... The game was pretty darned good. If people didn't have expectations for what being a Super Mario Brothers game meant, the game would probably have been extremely well liked. Especially considering the time frame that the game was released in.
Nintendo recognized an underselling gem, and gave it a major boost. Good for them. The Doki Doki Panic guys deserved it.
The ______ Agenda
Looks realy good i wish i had enough window space at my office to do it. only i would do a ninja gaiden mural. also sweet reference to strong bad

Wow, I never knew that... I thought SMB2 was a great game. I've always found it odd that they never followed through in the later games with any of Wart's minions/return/whatever, and that it pretty much seemed completely unrelated to anything Mario. I guess I now understand why there was sand, magic carpets, buzzards, snakes, pots, and stuff. I'm still confused about the little gas-mask ball shooter guys. Are they iranian terrorist insurgents or something? (chuckle)

Mural Adjective 1. Of or relating to walls; "mural painting". Noun 1. A painting that is applied to a wall surface. Reading the headline i expected something a little bigger. Pretty cool it's made with post-it notes though.

They also appeared in Yoshi's Island, the criminally underrated sequel to Super Mario World on the SNES.
Mod parent up informative. Doki Doki panic was a Nintendo game.
D'oh, yeah I totally forgot about the gasmask guys in Mario 64, probably because I never really got to play it (aside from at my cousin's house--and he always hogged it). I do now remember the cactus in 64 and mario world now that my memory is sparked. Good times.
Constitutional rights may be respected, repealed, or modified; but they must never be ignored.
Probably too late for you to see this, but I completely, wholeheartedly agree. I absolutely loved SMB2. At the time I had only previsouly played the original SMB, therefore I had no expecations about what a Mario game "should" be like. I was actually somewhat disappointed in SMB3 because it didn't include all the gameplay elements that I loved in SMB2.
SMB2 also gave us Birdo, who has emerged as a major character in the Mushroom Kingdom!
Umm no.
Doki Doki Panic was developed by Fuji TV and licensed to Nintendo. Check any webpage about the game, it says so on all of them.
That ice tower is really cool. It's not pointless though. The people who put it up are a climbing group, they use it for their hobby. If you look at the rest of their site, they apparantly object to some of the regulations that make it impossible or very difficult to practice their hobby in the Alaskan parks.
The one thing I wonder when looking at that is what the absolute maximum temperature reached around there is? The freezing point of water changes based on pressure (obviously not just true for water). Under sufficient pressure and at the right temperature ice changes instantly back into a liquid. This is actually why ice is slippery, and how ice skates work and why ice stops being slippery and ice skates stop working when it gets cold enough. The highest height I could find on the captions was 136 feet. I'm wondering how high it would need to get before the bottom of the tower suddenly liquifies. Maybe that wouldn't be an issue. Maybe as it gets close to that point the plastic flow of the ice at the bottom would just keep it spreading out. What I'm worried would happen is that ice would liquefy along some fracture line, the whole thing would slip along that line and crumble into bits.
Really, really impressive though.
More pictures, including some of the work being done appear to be online now...
