  1. Re:Why??? on Video iPod Oct 12? · · Score: 1

Okay, I'm not usually this blunt or rude, but you posted way too far down on this topic to not have seen the many explanations to this question.

Of course a 2 inch screen is not an ideal output. The iPod doesn't have on-board speakers either, and yet it rules the digital music player market. iPods ALREADY HAVE video out. That is what it will be used for, playing on other output devices, just like the iPod is now used. There is an obvious parallel between the inconvienence of audio CDs (and the subsequent online P2P phenomenon of 5 years ago) and the inconvenience of DVDs (and the current Bit Torrent phenomenon). True the ergonomic use of these two things will be different, but I have to think the demand vs. lack of supply is what drives product development, rather than "But it's not the same".

I mean come on, Don't you remember when it came out: "'iPod' what the hell is an iPod?!? I thought it plays music?'
It was conceived from its beginnings to not be tied to the function of a music player.

What stone carving? He apprenticed with Verrochio, so he did do some carving, but that really is not what he's known for. Many of his known sculptures are bronzes. He was really more of a painter. Also, you're really supposed to cal him Leonardo, like Michelangelo, not 'da Vinci' since there have been other people from Vinci throughout the course of history.

I for one wasn't expecting any more for 10.3, and was figuring to cut bait and move to Tiger. Any thoughts...?

    You've got to be kidding.

In case you haven't noticed, the production of a lot of the 'ideas' you are talking about: music, film, software, cannot exist without the 'encumbrances of ownership.' A $15,000 DV editing suite is not something that can 'flow freely between people in an unlimited fashion,' so why should you expect to benefit freely from what it produces?
This 1999 napster "information should be free! Now where's my CD spindle?" attitude was fun, but who had the dying business model that time?

The simple fact of the matter is that as much as you'd all like to think otherwise, the entire universe of information is NOT going to be GPL'd. It costs money to produce this stuff, and the market is going to develop distribution that will pay the bills. No amount of digital anarchist angst is going to stop good old Adam Smith.

I'm just saying that Apple products are inherently less upgrade-able than PC counterparts at that price point. Something that is going to be equal to or sub-eMac is going to be eclipsed on the PC side pretty quickly from a marketing (i.e. specs) point of view. Don't get me wrong, I'm a die-hard Mac addict, but I know if i directed the many friends and family for which I am the Mac liason to a product like this, in a year they'd be coming back pointing at the clock speeds of the $500 Dell... Like I said, though, I think the idea is once they get a user into OS X , they'll spring the extra $$ for the G5 iMac. btw I still use a dual g4 450

  17. possible pandora's box (shameful pun) on Think Secret Predicts Sub-$500 Headless Mac · · Score: 1, Insightful

Apple has always had a relatively high standard in the performance department. Releasing a G4 in the context of today's rapidly developing Mac software (64 bit, extended memory capability, etc.) is going to leave these headless 'switchers' in the dust eventually, since developers are probably going to move on to the G5 now that it's in the iMac. I just see these new switchers stuck with limited software choices even within the Mac software market. It seems like this would work for no longer than one generation of computer purchases before users realize they need more horsepower. Then again, that is probably all Apple wants (and in my opinion, all it needs) to grab iPod-based converts and get them in front of an iMac.

The author simply didn't consider the market placement of the eMac. It was originally for school computer labs (hence the 'e') and for that purpose it is well suited. Considering cost of software and support for a PC intended for the same functionality (web & email, word processing, multimedia viewing) I think it is at least in line with the rest of Apple's relatively high price tags. I would (and have) gladly paid the extra few hundred bucks when getting a non-techie a computer if i know it will mean i will not be beckoned ever few weeks b/c the thing has simply ground to a halt with malware. Show me a Dell that can garauntee that, and I'll pay $800 for it. Oh wait, I did pay $800 for a dell, and it still constantly bugs out on me.

I would say it has to do with the iPod giving people permission to look at an Apple. If you own a better, but way more expensive peripheral, then it's a psychological foot-in-the-door to let you walk into the Apple store and take a look at all those cool expensive computers.
