  2. Epic Battle on Microsoft Pushes Windows To Battle Linux In Africa · · Score: 1

I'm picturing the battleground - Steve Ballmer against an army of the Ubuntu release name animals, led by Mark Shuttleworth on an African plain somewhere.

  3. Fail/HardFail vs SoftFail on Gmail, SPF, and Broken Email Forwarding? · · Score: 3, Informative

Have your friend look up the SPF records for a bunch of big domains. He'll notice that most of them use "~all" - a SoftFail - which is accepted by Gmail. He's probably using "-all," which makes the message just drop. The only examples I've seen of SPF hardfails in the wild are from banks. However, loads of domains are using softfail - Facebook, Google, Microsoft, eBay, MIT, UC Berkeley - to name a few.

  4. Re:But Ubuntu has no root account! on Root Password Readable in Clear Text with Ubuntu · · Score: 1

That's a feature. It's so you don't go messing around with root if you don't know what you're doing, as Ubuntu is geared toward being user friendly, and to people who aren't necessarily entirely familiar with the workings of Linux. It's easy enough to activate the root account, just 'sudo passwd'.

  5. Re:Harry Potter was copied from Feist and LeGuin on Da Vinci Code Author Sued · · Score: 1

Yes, and in turn, if you look at Feist's names for things, they come directly from Tolkien's style. Which in turn come from roots in many actual historical things. [is too lazy to look up more now]. Most fantasy books are based off earlier ones in some way or another... it's rather hard to avoid.

You sir, are weak. Being able to untangle that mass of cableage behind one's desk is a staple of geekhood, gross wire length (like number of LEDs in one's living space) is a status symbol. You fail.
