The article is written in such a manner that it seems as if a similar type of thing doesn't happen here in America. What about the people who get addicted to EverQuest and destroy their social lives by never leaving their room?
...a possibility to make opt-in filtering much easier would be to sign some sort of agreement with the CDDB people for the use of their database as a method of retrieving song names, so that songs with a filename matching a song name in the CDDB would be allowed.
Just yesterday, I was thinking of Bloom County, and suddenly, an article about it appears on Slashdot. That's disturbing.

As much as I'd like to do that, there is one type of DSL available where I live (IDSL), so I don't know if it would be a solution. However, IDSL _IS_ a rip-off ($125/mo!), so maybe people would go for it. *shrug*

I petitioned Pacific Bell in 1999 with tons of names of people in my town who all wanted DSL, and what have they done? Jack shit. The same thing goes for TCI (now AT&T Cable). 5000 people obviously isn't enough to warrant putting in a few DSLAMs or for TCI to upgrade their shitty cable system. And because I live behind a big old hill, I can't get Sprint's wireless broadband. I've given up on getting fast Internet access at a reasonable price.
Will Napster continue to offer a free service? Yes! We are committed to creating a system in which users can choose to participate without paying any money. We realize that Napster is nothing without its user community -- you make us what we are. However, for a small membership fee we feel that we can facilitate an enhanced service that you'll find even more valuable and that will allow us to generate revenues to be able to make payments to artists and songwriters for music files that our users share with each other. We are working with Bertelsmann and other potential allies in an effort to work out the details of how all this will work and we will, of course, keep you fully informed as details become available.
...with the exception of software that is REQUIRED to connect to a server to work because of client/server authentication (i.e. McAfee's Oil Change). I expect to see a crack within a week of the release of Whistler.

Has it occurred to this guy that you don't have to install every package that comes with your distribution?
Once again, Slashdot is light years behind on anime news.:] This was announced at AX2000. Akira is coming out on DVD, from Pioneer, in the summer of 2001.
So here's the slogan for my campaign: our kids deserve the best in first-person shooters. In my America, every family will have free movie tickets, 300 megatexels, and low-ping broadband. Let's put an end to frame rates under 30 Hz. For our country - for our safety - we can leave no child behind.
Every Internet user in Europe would commit suicide if this happened. Not only would they have metered phone service, they'd also have metered Internet service.:/
A subscription fee? Napster would be making money off of providing a service that allows people to distribute music illegally. It would be the equivalent of selling bootleg CDs.
This is nothing new. DirecTV has been sending down "updates" that kill unauthorized access cards for years now.
HackHu (www.hackhu.com) is a good site for info on DirecTV "update" news.
When I said "similar thing" I meant people's lives being taken over by a game. I should have been more specific. my bad :/

The way the license is written, if you use any open-source software, you have to make the rest of your software open source.
I thought that wasn't a requirement under the LGPL.
I have a Dell laptop and it's only broken down once. The return time was extremely fast (a few days), and they didn't bill me for anything.
I'm still trying to decide why everyone hates Dell laptops.

It was announced in July of last year at AnimeExpo that Pioneer was rereleasing Akira in the summer of 2001. :]

You can get a version of Slackware that fits on a Zip disk. Try doing THAT with Windows.

A "crowded marketplace"? Yeah...crowded with game consoles.

...are the best. Get a Pioneer DV-434. It does progressive scan, component video, CD/CD-R reading, etc.
...it was totally proprietary! :]
PS: I'm making fun of the typo in the article subject, in case you don't get it.

I use IDSL (it's all I can get--PAC BELL SUCKS) from NorthPoint through InternetConnect and it's fine.
