You don't. Some people won't ever believe anything you tell them, regardless of what proof, studies, etc. you have. The solution is to not waste your time worrying about those few people. If you tax inefficent incandescent bulbs and make them cost 1+X% of what they do now, you'll get the vast majority of people to switch, and that's really what counts.

As a civil libertarian, I hate to see taxes as a solution to anything, but sometimes you have to recognize reality too ;-)

Granted, I had to do a little bit of fucking around with the Radeon Mobile drivers to get the 3D support to work (and they're not open source, but I don't care), but everything else (thumbpad, LCD screen, buttons on the front) worked out of the box. Infact, I'm a *gamer* (Warcraft III, Black & White) using a Dell laptop.

The only trouble with Svensmark's idea -- apart from its being politically incorrect -- was that meteorologists denied that cosmic rays could be involved in cloud formation. After long delays in scraping together the funds for an experiment, Svensmark and his small team at the Danish National Space Center hit the jackpot in the summer of 2005.

Why didn't the oil cartel fund his experiment if they were so interested in it? Or did you just choose to assume, without actually reading the article?

Global warming is a concern, but so is the economics of the US. Right now corn farmers in my state get tons of money, more than the tax cuts of 2-5 cents/gallon are worth on all the ethanol sold in my state. We import a lot of oil, and we run at a very high trade deficit. If we can make a product that is nearly the same ourselves, why wouldn't we?

Also for the record, if I change my driving habits (i.e. not floor it every time I accellerate... coast more and use the breaks less), I make a significant change in the amount of fuel I use compared to what I might lose burning ethanol.

I go to a big Ag/Engineering school in the Midwest, Obama will be speaking at our school tomorrow. I'm lucky to live in a unique area of the US where the energy alternatives (mainly ethanol) are actually cheaper than the regular fuels because of all of the tax cuts. If he brings pricing everywhere in the US to the levels it is in my state (about $.02-.05/gallon cheaper than non-ethanol fuels) I'll be much more likely to vote for him.

Honestly, I don't even see a negative side to ethanol (other than it's still a fossil fuel). It reduces our dependance on foregin oil, and would (presumably) lower our national trade deficit and keep more money within the borders (something that conservatives are sure to be happy about).

It will be interesting to see Obama's commitment levels on the issue as we progress toward Nov, 2008.

Have you seen what MS charges college students? You only get a discount on XP Pro last I checked, and its still 99 dollars. With the special Microsoft licensing deal at my last uni, I could get it for 89.. wow the savings.

At the bookstore, I can get a copy of Windows XP for $7. With the university 10mbit line, I can download a disk w/ a keygen from usenet in a matter of minutes (a shorter time than it takes me to walk to the bookstore and back). I'm writing this on a slackware system.

Apparently you make enough that 99 dollars isn't much money. To some people, thats a fifth of their rent or half their weekly paycheck before taxes! If Microsoft shut them out, they would be forced to use an alternative OS. Microsoft doesn't want to lose poor people. I got into computing in my teens while I lived in a trailer park. I can tell you that everyone with a computer ran windows 3.1 or 95 in there. (well except me and a friend who pirated NT4) I was a freak when i tried redhat 5. Aside from the obvious hatred of trailer parks I now have, I don't see these people affording anything or wanting to switch off windows.

I have completed one year of schooling in the Electrical Engineering field. I work at a shipping warehouse for a large department store.

Next year, my monthly rent will be $296. Nowhere near the $500 you imply in your post. Also my biweekly paycheck after taxes is about $850 (working 60 hours/week).
