Who would have thought that allowing users to ideally "share" samples of media with someone else (via youtube or the like) that someone that watches or listens might actually like it and buy the CD/DVD/Whatever. I'm sure a lot of us here use to have mix tapes that someone made up for you and thought to yourself "wow I like that song I might buy the cassette(or CD)". Really how are people supposed to get new music if all they have to go buy is the crap that is on those music television shows or on the radio where they play a very limited selection, and if you don't like Justin Tiberlake or 50 Cent too bad.

  3. Authorised access on UK Police Cracking Down on Broadband Theft · · Score: 1

The way I see it, and I know it isn't the law. If you get an IP address from the router then that is authorisation from the person that owns the connection. I'm not saying that it is right to connect to unsecure networks but as many people have said a lot of devices automatically connect to unsecured wireless networks. How can it be stealing if this persons wireless signals are virtually bombarding me and my OS by default wants to connect. Surely the OS vendor, the router manufacturer, and the person that set up the connection are to blame as well. I bet there would be a case if you got prosecuted for "stealing" broadband to sue all of the above.

After that I check my emails for the funnys that the people sent me, followed by the more serious ones after the caffeine has hit. I then check what everyone has planned for the day, I like to let people decide what they want to do for the day if anything has come up that needs some attention then I will direct them to the more urgent matters. I really guess it depends on the kind of environment that you work in. I work in a place were at lot of the staff are mature and don't need much direction. After I tell people what to do I like to sit back and read slashdot and some news sites for a while. Then I go to a long lunch maybe at a pub, after which I follow up on purchase orders and "service" vendors to see why they have broken on my network/servers you can be sure some monkey has done something that they shouldn't have. After that I like to get to work on my own little projects for a couple of hours, just to make it look like I am doing something. Then I like to take an early minute.

Surely if MS are going to all this trouble with the hologram then they MUST crack down on these retailers. For all I know it could be pirated. I have reported the company to the BSA and I hope that MS gets them good. I am using the qwerty layout at the moment and never tought how to touch type but I can type at around 80wpm with very good accuracy. I thought about switching to a dvorak layout many years ago when I heard of the benefits but never got around to it. Anyways I was wondering if this keyboard would be a suitable match for those of you that are having a hard time getting a dvorak board.

Also for those that have made the switch but aren't touch typers and just magically your fingers know where the keys are, does it take a long time to "learn" and can you switch back between them without hassles?

  18. Some advice. on Gadgets You Backpack Around the World With? · · Score: 1
I did a bit of travelling last year in western Europe and found that life would have been so much easier with a simple PDA with wifi with GPS and possibly some travel eBooks as well. Now I am a big fan of lonely planet but the massive books add a lot of weight to your backpack. I don't recommend that you take a laptop, Europe isn't like Asia, there are internet cafes everywhere and a lot of hostels have wifi or an internet terminal.

A lot of people have said that less is better with clothes and I have to agree, I ended up giving away my sweatshirts as they added too much weight and I found that even in the mild European summer I didn't really get cold when walking round with my pack on. My advice is check the weather before you leave and then pack for 10 degrees Celsius more, you can always put two shirts on rather than a sweatshirt. I did quite a few treks with my 15kg pack on and I can tell you after a couple of days a few hours a day a 15kg pack feels like it's 100kg.

Carrying a Swiss army knife sounds like a good idea for all those times that you need to use a half sized knife, a magnifying glass, a screwdriver and a cork screw, well a cork screw may come in handy... but what ever you do, DO NOT carry a knife, you are asking to be held up at international terminals and possibly searched.

Always carry a little bit of change (notes preferably) of different currencies if you are going through a couple of countries, when you travel through Europe you really don't need to carry a lot of food or water as long as you got a little money you can buy something, saves on valuable space and weight in your pack.

Many people have said to carry a lighter, while yes they are handy you don't want to loose your nice Zippo so be sure if you get on a plane to not have it on your carry on.

Some people said a decent pack and I have to say this is possibly THE most important thing, it is going to be attached to you for long periods of time. You can get packs now that are really high tech made from light weight materials and that have hard shaped backs that you can adjust depending on how tall, how broad your shoulders are and have a day pack. I think it might be a good idea to consider something like that. I did and I'm glad I did otherwise I can assure you that after a couple of days I would have ended up in a chiropractor.

All the electronics that I took were my iPod and a camera and I seemed to manage fine, in fact I loved not having a phone or a laptop.

Of course what you take really depends on how you want to get around where you are staying what time of year. Be sensible and think ahead.

I'm sorry but the clear lack of understanding dripping from your post is just incredible. There is one law for citizens and none for police. It's really quite simple and we see it time and time again in cases just like this where the public rightfully point out misconduct from the police and then end up on the wrong side of the law. I have never met a nice, considerate, helpfull policeman and I like to think of myself as a law abiding person. I have absolutly no respect for them and none for the legal system that they are supposedly enforcing. How can you when the people enfocing the law break it time and time again. "NextG" as it's called here is now availible and it covers 98% of the country now I don't know about you but if you have 3G/GSM and NextG/GSM why on earth would you want just a GSM phone when you could have a nice speed in certain areas and still have the coverage of GSM. The fact remains that it IS old technology and they should be developing phones that look towards the future rather than look back to GSM.

Much to my surprise these devices were no where to be found. Not only are they not at the local phone store I have emailed countless people about getting a linux based phone and no one has even replied, are these phones vaporware or what? Does anyone have one? Also I only know of one of these phones that has 3G, now really in this day and age 3G just doesn't cut it and does anyone even want GSM phone? I'm surprised they aren't going directly to landfill.
