So what? Write-once is great for keeping the original, unedited copy around. Gurantees some idiot won't erase it someday.

Copy raw DV to disc for backup -> copy back to hard drive when needed -> edit -> burn final cut to another disc.

Of course, for any sort of archival use, we need to know how long the media lasts.

If I'm posting something very specific in response to a single poster, that adds absolutely nothing to the overall discussion, I might post without the bonus. Or if I knowingly write something that is, as you said, uninteresting and off topic (or trolling- because sometimes it has to be done), I'll uncheck the box.

I guess I figure it's less likely to be seen by mods, and I'll lose less Karma when they invariably mod it down.

I agree completely. My Windows desktop is quite a bit faster than yours, but it has more than enough power to run Windows with a game on top and some services beneath. And aside from the firewall, there is absolutely no reason for antivirus and antispyware programs to run all to time, or even very often.

Keep your system updated. Use a firewall (preferably a real one, a linux box sharing your internet connection), and run the anti-whatever stuff once a week or so. A modern single-core processor is plenty.

  11. Re:No word yet... on New Mac System Specs · · Score: 4, Informative

PCI-X is really designed for servers: RAID cards, gigabit ethernet, fibre channel, things like that. It's just an extension of the original PCI, to wring more life out of it until PCIe was ready, so it's unlikely that more uses will be found for it.

PCI-express is, on paper, good for everything. The x16 slots are for video cards, the x8 slots for RAID and gigabit, the x1 slots are for everything else, from new ports to sound cards to whatever. Or they will be, anyway; I've yet to see a PCIe device other than a video card.

People stick all kinds of things in slots (there's a joke there, somewhere). With more stuff being integrated into computers, it's become sort of a power user thing, though, which is why only the Powermac on the Mac side has the slots.

The novel Aftermath by Charles Sheffield is about a supernova explosion of Alpha Centauri, and possible ways to protect the Earth. It's been a long time since I read it, but I think the solution they came up with was to build a shield between Earth and the nova- a giant metal mesh in space. Basically a one-sided Faraday cage.

It bothered me at first, but after a couple of days I got used to it. For fuck's sake, just listen to music or watch TV or something.

And advice for the guy who wrote the article- the Quadro 4000 is just a Geforce 6800; there are fanless coolers for it if the deafening noise of one fan bugs you so much.
