how the thinning ozone layer affects weather patterns? I understand that increased UV causes skin cancer and all that, but what does it have to do with the weather?
If Riker and Troi will be in the season finale, that probably means it'll be a cliffhanger...so if Enterprise gets cancelled, we'll never find out how it ends. I know the show isn't that great, but seriously, that would be a very sad way for a Star Trek series to end.
I've been thinking about that. Between Google cache (and other search engines) and the Internet Archive, anything you write may well be immortal. However, neither caches pictures, audio, or video, as far as I know.
Honest. But, living on a college campus (and breaking into other people's Windows shares across the network, heh heh) made me think about security. Now I have a DSL connection, and my main desktop PC runs Windows. I have:
1)Firewalls: hardware (old PC running IPCOP) and software (the one that came with SP2, and the one built into OS X on the laptop). 2)Passwords: all are 19 characters, as random as I can remember. 3)Spyware: Firefox, Ad-Aware, Spybot on Windows, and use the Mac for all e-mail. 4)Wireless: 128-bit WEP and no SSID broadcast. 5)Physical security: I got into the habit of locking the computer if I was leaving it for any amount of time. And I don't ever leave my laptop alone in public.
Beyond all that, if someone wants my data, I don't see much else I can do. My porn isn't that good.
Exactly. As long as the player has S-video/component out, I'll be able to capture it on a computer in any format I like. And only one copy has to be posted on the net for the piracy to begin.
I think it's time to get this shuttle show back on the road. NASA will never be able to fix all of the problems; there are just too many ways a shuttle can explode on launch or burn up on re-entry. Somehow, I don't think that's ever caused NASA any problems with recruiting new astronauts.
Meanwhile, there's an unfinished space station up there, a dying orbital observatory, and a lot of scientific research that has been put on hold. The shuttle should be returned to flight ASAP and it should be used until NASA or private industry can build an adequate replacement.
Quincy, M.E.? I was two years old* when that show went off the air. Raise yor hands, Slashdotters, how many of you think of Quincy when you think of forensics?
Nemesis had a worldwide gross of $97,500,000 and a budget of $70,000,000*. That doesn't seem like much profit on so expensive a film from a major franchise; I seriously doubt Paramount will give Berman more money to lose on the next one.
I have a history degree with an emphasis in ancient history, and I thought about minoring in astronomy. So, this story was somewhat interesting to me. But now that I live in the real world, I pay attention to politics, I get most of my news (or opinion, anyway)from blogs, and I have discovered Slashdot.
The recovery of lost knowledge is a good thing, and I'm sure the people best qualified to study it are doing so, but I'm far more interested now in what other people think. I can (and will) read a book to find out about ancient wisdom, but where else am I going to get nattering about pee-pees?

Pirated media that is indistinguishable from the original!
And former Borg drones.
It plays fine for me in Quicktime for Windows.

I remember that game, too. Here it is: http://telcontar.net/Misc/Gorillas/

Having a question mark at the beginning is a little odd
Maybe it's in Spanish...
if it's not too big that is
Those damn neutrinos! You can't even feel 'em!
This is Slashdot, and it's way too early on a Saturday morning, why would I read the article?
I wonder if he's pissed it doesn't cost $249?
Well...maybe he is, a little. But if that's not a +5 insightful, I don't know what is. Nobody said they were mutually exclusive.
If you can play it, you can copy it.

so how does this help /. users?
"the ClearType Tuner PowerToy ClearType Tuner"
Wow... who came up with that name? I'll give it a shot.
My ex-roomates recycle CRT's by throwing them on the ground until they break :)
My 19" Synchmaster ($390 at Sam's Club) is pretty bright, too. I keep it at 60% brightness, any lower and it makes a buzzing sound...
Interesting. I just turned it on, and it made all the text on my 19" LCD blurry. It was turned off immediately.

Wow, that is sad. I actually liked the movie, too. But if I were a studio, I wouldn't pay to make another one, not for a long time.
