From TFA: To go even further - which Oxer admits having done just to prove a point - he can have the system trigger an event which sends an email into an object inside Second Life, which then creates a virtual representation of an email notification that there is physical mail to be collected - you've got mail to say that you've got mail.
Since it's an old machine with onboard video it's quite possible it's using system RAM as graphics RAM. So, check out the BIOS, there might be a setting to reduce the amount of memory allocated to the graphics adapter in the fist place. More efficient than trying to swap through some obscure hack:)
They might be more willing to try out random bottles IRL if the chances were decent it could be a Potion of Gain Ability, Gain Level, Full Healing etc though:)
Someone did a babelfish-like translation of "kriminalpolisen" it seems (which would translate to "the criminal police" if doing it word bye word):)
Just like there is a trafikpolis ("traffic police", department(s) that handle traffic rules violations amongst others, not surprisingly) there also is a kriminalpolis.
Sinclair ZX-81 was the first computer I used at home. At first it wasn't really mine (my father borrowed it from someone) but they never wanted it back, so it became mine:) Because of the limited RAM, I couldn't write BASIC programs longer than about 2-3 screens (and I'm not exactly talking 80x25 screens here..). I think I was around 9 at this time, around 1982.
Then I got hold of a Vic-20. Whoa! Took me a while to fill that RAM. (A text adventure game finally did the trick though. The color was a nice addition too. Centipede, here I come:)
After that is was a C-64, and I started a little with assembler. Never got really good though. Then followed Atari ST, then an STe (yep, never went Amiga).
I wanted to run a BBS, and didn't want my Atari occupied all the time, so I got hold of an old 286, learned DOS, started programming (BBS doors mainly in the beginning, in Pascal). The rest is history:)
The brain changes are really interesting. They seem to make people more prone to risk-taking and sexual behavior, which would of course encourage spread of the disease.
Do you have any further info about this? Sounds to me they just don't feel like there is much to loose anymore and might just as well try to enjoy themselves while they can. "The worst" has already happened.
Compare with the behaviour of many depressed people.
If the rest of the world can get the censored version by using google.cn, can China get the uncensored one by using google.com for the search? Anyone from.cn around?
First of all, I agree it's a blessing to be able to work with something one loves. If more people were able to do that I believe the world might be a better place.
It might be a mixed blessing however. Even if you love your work (tech/programming related in my case, and I believe in many cases on Slahsdot...). Mondays still come, work pile up, bosses who doesn't listen etc. It's not just what you do, but who you do it with, salary (up to a certain point) etc etc. In my case I find that working with what I (used to) love killed much of my creativity and it becomes just a job and not a hobby anymore on my free time. That, or I'm just getting old and bored;-)
I totally agree with parent. While Taco's statement that bad spelling and grammar are secondary is correct, at least as far as content is concerned, they really make it harder to read a text.
Sometimes it can be amusing trying to decode a totally broken sentence, especially when one fails totally. When I browse slashdot however I just want the latest news. I don't feel I have the time to be interrupted in the browsing of an article summary text because noone felt it was important enough to fix grammar errors. Bad spelling is a lesser problem as I see it though.
Since English is not my native language I probably did a few mistakes myself writing this comment.:-P It's easier to spot the mistakes of others however, and therefore errors should be trivial for editors to catch.
It still says something about the graphics hardware. Also, you could connect an external CRT. I wouldn't expect to really take advantage of 1-2 kfps no matter what screen you use though:)
What are you talking about, the 2600 controllers were fantastic! I kept using them when I moved to the C64 (same interface).
Many years later I mounted two old RS232 ports onto an old PC keybord, mapped the cables to keys and used the 2600 controllers to play games like Dynablaster on the PC against a friend. Nothing like good old digital joysticks.:)
Maybe if you didn't work on any of the ancient systems needing conversion. It was overhyped, I agree, but that was partly what made it seem like a walk in the park to everyone else.
But you're allowed to read and post on Slashdot, right? ;)

But I see your point
How could you possibly be worried about a plot, if you're nurtured in a cafana with the morning coffee and a Hooka pipe? Chill dude ;)
Nor is it very random :P

Actually, it should read "Göteborgs-Posten" :)

Name one game developer that has control over the vast majority of desktop computers.
:P
Sony?
Sorry I just HAD to...

My 2c.
Why keep a second computer around for games if you can make the Mac dual-boot?
Uptime, duh!

Gibson claimed that the flaw could be exploited only by using a byte size of 1 in the metafile record, which Toulouse says is incorrect.
Yeah, so? Most bugs of this kind is triggered by passing "broken" data.
I Google Russia, AdSense pay YOU :P
Yeah go ahead, my Karma is already shot to hell
In the end there can be only one
So basically you won't be running Linux on it anytime soon?

Ladies and Gentlemen Allow Me to Introduce the Cat Car
Really? Where?
Wow, it's Duke Nukem Forever!
Sorry, I'll get my coat...

Of course there will be more coming, but the Europeans at least showed they won't sit quiet and just let this happen.
