Nuh-uh. I had Beryl running perfectly with in Edgy on my desktop with a Sempron 3000 CPU, 1GB of RAM and a $10 128MB GeForce FX5200. That is NOT high-end anywhere in the 1st world.

64-bit is apparently significantly faster on an AMD64 machine if you have 4GB of RAM, otherwise its advantage is whittled away by the issues you mentioned. I was originally under the impression that I had no choice but to use it when I upgraded to a machine with a Sempron CPU, but there are, as you mentioned, a few key software inconveniences that piss me off, and I'll be switching back to 32-bit when I install Feisty this weekend.

They have to implement incrementally more complex encryption to present the impression (true or otherwise) of due diligence to clients/stakeholders. If they replaced CSS with something even simpler, they'd get blasted for it. This way it at least looks like they're trying, and that's good enough to cover their asses and stay in business.

I'm not sure that's the best analogy - New Coke averaged better in blind taste tests than Classic, as do Diet Coke and Pepsi, I've been told. What they failed at was recognition of brand loyalty. Coke is an institution, and we don't want it to be better, we want it to be Coke, dammit.

Windows on the other hand, should improve. Vista should be Coke that tastes exactly like it always did, but comes in a prettier bottle and stops you getting bird flu.

Can't speak for RH/Suse etc., but having used Ubuntu for about two and a half years now, I've never had an upgrade (always installed within a week of full release) with worse hardware compatibility for my (admittedly fairly generic) setup than previous versions. IOW, it worked before it got released, not 12 months after.
