Hey, I lived quite close to Merida for 15 years (Campeche city). I dont know when did you go to Mexico last time but nowadays you can find lots of services (cable, DSL, etc) not very expensive (for a poor Mexican POV) in there. Besides, I just read about a company called "Fourth Source" which is trying to promote outsourcing to Merida with the idea that "to go to India you need 10 hours in a plane whereas to go to Merida you need 2 hours from Florida (direct flight)".

Merida is a great place to live (even for Mexicans), there are 2 other places: Xalapa which is one of the most culturally active city in Mexico, it is home of the LANIA (Advanced Informatics National Laboratory) . In fact it is the place where I am aiming to work if I cant get something here in Europe after finishing my PhD.

Then I know lots of people love beach. There is a great place called La Paz where you have beach at 5 mintues from anywhere. And of course all of these places are cheap (for an American) and you have broadband (cable or ASDL mostly) access. And, at least in La Paz there is a HUGE community of americans, mostly hippy type and old people that go there for retirement so even if you dont speak Spanish, you wont have a lot of trouble (in Merida and Xalapa you would have to stay in the "touristic" zones).

Anyway, this is really interesting for me as a Mexican, I know a lot of us dream on going to USA (not me personally as I dont like your current foreign policies) or Europe (yay! I am in UK w00t) in order to be "successfull".

Even so, Sony is not the only one doing that in UK. It is something that pisses me of as it is completely clear that Britons are paying a "corporate tax" for their assets. There was at least another case where TESCO (a Wal*Mart like chain) was selling Levi's jeans cheaper (almost half price of the retai price in UK) than Levi's by importing them from other European countries.

Of course Levi's sued them and won so now Tesco had to sell them at the "suggested retail price".

Its stupid, the last time I raised the issue with a Briton (I live in britain now) he made all kind of excuses, from the VAT to the shipping costs. But then I showed him the prices of some cameras and even after the 17% VAT + something in shipping and handling the prices in the UK where something like £50 more expensive (for a £200 camera)

Unfortunately I had just bought some sony brand earplugs (I like them because they are in-ear but not as expensive as the shure E3c [or something like that]). After some time I had to buy replacement for the replaceable buds but sony wanted to rape me with £10 for I believe 2 pairs.

I held my boycott and bought some from a chinnese guy on Ebay, just for £5 for something like 6 pairs black and white :).

I just bought a DVD player, and I chose a Phillips (I believe Sony electronics are pretty overpriced, not as Bose of course but they are still overpriced).

I have explained my girlfriend about Sony practices and at least she will think again before buying Sony (although she still wants that iPod... even if there are other better mp3 players I have not been able to convince her).

I dont buy movies, I rent them via lovefilm and I seldom go to the cinemas, just when some nice "independent" film is screened.

I will buy a Wii, because mmm because I am not attracted to the othe 2 systems. Oh, and for all of you who believe that the PS3 will be incrdible expensive, just the other time I was showing my girlfriend the differences in prices (in the wikipedia), the price of the ps3 for Mexico is: MXN$7,999 ($640 US) MXN$9,499 ($760 US). Can you believe that shit? $760 US. I think that the market in Mexico for it is what, 2 persons? (well, lets say Fox children and the new president children). Of course you still have to buy the $99 US for the games... that is INSANE.

Yeah, I agree with the Sonny boycott. I hope more and more people realize that corporations are consuming their rights and start fighting the only way they can to stop them (no, political movements and any other kind of government related tactics wont work as corporations already spoon feed politicians, no I am not paranoid enough, I am from and lived in a country where corrupt government is blatant and the rich are the ones that control the goverment with the Mordida).

And yes, I have asked a Mexican lawyer (while having lunch) and it is legal to do it. Now, one thing I found interesting in the article is the Internet cafes issue. How are they suppose to get the "criminals" that share in a internet cafe? Are they going to sue the owners of the cafe? because one buy run emule from its usb and downloaded/shared music? You know, in Mexico Internet Cafe is the most prevalent way that teens (from 12 to even more than 25) get into internet. Mostly because it is very cheap and broadband is still very, VERY expensive (for the standard earning).

Secondly, they have not been able to shut down the blatant piracy that takes place in the CENTRE of Mexico City where people SELL illegally copied software, music and others for US$2 a disc (or $5 a DVD).

Thirdly, it is going to be interesting what is the extortion price they ask in Mexico. From the previous lawsuits I have read in USA, the RIAA has asked among $3,000. A lot of people cant afford that here. I am sure they will offer a less expensive extortion payment.

    I know how.

First, you must throw away every preconception of the subject (or art) you will work on (drawing, painting, game development, etc). In the case of game development you have to erase from your mind your mind things like "game genre" and "oriented to X type of people". Of course, doing the next "picaso like" game wont make it a blockbuster release. Lots of the people we remember as geniuses and greatest were (unfortuately) seen as crazy (and were poor) on their times. It is just *after* they die that their art start taking value.

Now, for the second part of your question "how to make a blockbuster movie" or game of course, we already have the recipe. A blockbuster game is something like GTA. You just have to create something similar, shoot people, slap women and all that will guaranty you tons of sells. It does not mean that it is good, it is just what the average of the people like (hence it is what most people will buy).

Just today I was happily running my Ubuntu based laptop when I saw a notification icon about "available updates". I clicked on it an proceeded to download the updates. Everything seemed right, excepting that there was one package (something called "image kernel") that failed to download and install; besides of that, everything went smooth (or appeared to be).

Anyway, after restarting the computing the only thing I got was a kernel panic... and I could not even restart in failsafe mode or anything else... basically my laptop is unusable now.

On the other side, I could never use the hibernate or suspend features of my laptop because after I selected hibernate, the computer would turn off fine, but when restoring the session it would just get freezed. The same thing happened to the suspend mode. I tried in some ubuntu forums but the only answer I got was "your computer ACPI is broken"... which is stupid as "the ohter" operating system can hybernate and suspend without problems.

What is the relevance of this you might ask?, well, from my experince (since 1994 when I installed FreeBSD for the first time), Linux has always been a "catch up" operating system. First it was the modems (and the "buy a real modem" zealot slogan) then the sound cards, then the video cards and now the wireless chips. Linux kernel developers cant get along with the technology development speed. It always feels as if Linux is one step back of the current hardware. And the main problem are the drivers. But, in my opinion is not a problem of the hardware manufacturers but a problem of the Linux zealotry of "give us the driver source code or give us the ball". Linux will always be catching up trying to hack togheter hardware drivers until they agree to play nicely with the hardware providrers.
