Hi-diddly-ho, neighbor-ino, are they still looking for translators/beta testers in Sony?
I was going to apply for that job (as Spanish is my native tongue), unfortunately I am in the middle of my PhD. I hope there is still job available from sony in one year... of course, because I am not from anywhere insdie the EU mi emplyoer would need to get the work permit (something I doubt they would do). Of course I believe I can work for one year after finishing so I may very well be there.
Wow $399.00 for the Operating System... and, how much is the hardware?, and what can this Operating System can do? I guess we (in Mexico) will continue to get it the Aye! way, it would be stupid to think that people will pay $400 for Windows when they payed $300 for the computer.
Bernie was talking to his friend Jack about his rebellious son Yossi. "When I was a youngster and did something wrong, my parents punished me by sending me to my bedroom without supper. I hated it. But our Yossi has his own colour TV, phone, computer and DVD player in his bedroom so we can't do that - it wouldn't be much of a punishment." "So what do you do, then?" asked Jack. "We send him up to our bedroom without supper!
When I was younger (on secondary and high school) my parents sometimes used to punish me sending me to my bedroom. Unfortunately the home PC was *in my bedroom* so I just made a sad face and went up there, turned on the computer and started programming for aaaaaaaall the rest of the day:) great days where those =op
Oh, and the mentioned text was from here. I just remembered the passage but the page is the first that came on google:)
From TFA: I was attempting to construct a railway line connecting the north end to the south end of my civilization. [Snip]... I needed to assign about a hundred workers to building the railway line in order to get it built before being overrun. For each worker, I had to click on it once to bring it into focus; then type 'g' to begin a movement, scroll to its starting point on... [blah][blah][blah]
Well, lets see if this guy is whining about too many clicks, I've got the solution:
~
then:
Worker works= new[100] Worker(); [INTRO]
Railway r = new railway.new(workers); [INTRO]
foreach (Worker w in works) ; [INTRO]
{ [INTRO]
w.setFocus(); [INTRO]
w.setAction(Construct(r)); [INTRO]
} [INTRO]
With the Playstation/Saturn/N64 generation, we were introduced to "3D games". But they didn't look that great. Well, the N64 looked pretty good, but it was hampered by using cartridges instead of CDs.
With the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube generation, we didn't get any new *types* of games, but we got *good-looking* versions of the games we had on the previous generation. And they really did/do look good.
Moreover I believe it has been the natural trend in videogame consoles since I have memory: 0. Atari 2600 et. al. 1. NES/Sega Master System: New Technology/new kind of games [Compared to Atari, games that "have an end"] 2. SNES/Sega Genesis: Sligthly better technology/same kind of games [Compared to 1, more backgrounds, more pixels, etc] 3. N64/PSX/Dreamcast: New Technology/New kind of games [Compared to 2, Real 3D, new kind of input (analog joystick)] 4. GC/PS2/Xbox: Slightly better technology/same kind of games [Compared to 3, same input, sligthly better graphics and 3D, net play was the only new thing] 5.
a) Xbox360: Slightly better technology/same kind of games [Compared to 4 - Xbox, better graphics and better network play]
b) PS3/Wii: New technology/New kind of games [Compard to 4, Wii has a completely new kind of input while Sony has input improvement, new kind of gameplay].
From my point of view, the real "next generation" comes every 2 iterations. And, considering that each time the consoles life span is smaller a "new generation" is not what it was before.
Now, one thing to note is that this "2 iterations" thing is independent for each vendor, for example, sony had the PS1 and PS2 which where, the transition was not a real "next generation", now with the PS2 to PS3 there will be a transition. Nintendo has been doing the same since the NES/SNES, N64/GC Wii/??. Also with the handelds: GB/GBPocket GBLight/GBColor GBA/GBASP DS/DSLite.
On this line we have Microsoft whose first console was Xbox, and their "next gen" console is what I would call the "half" generation step. It is their next console the one that will truly be different from the Xbox.
Yah, make fun of it all you want but my girlfriend has had the idea of getting an Ipod. I have told that, if I gave her an mp3 player it wont be an apple because I refuse to pay the "look I al cool" factor for an overprized gizmo. I would certaintly buy a iRiver product (I still have my slim iMP400 which had EXCHANGABLE BATTERIES9, i am not in USA so the "warranty" is an issue).
Of course from the sight she gave to me it was clear that, if I buy her something else than an Ipod, it will just be "ok" whereas if I give her an Ipod that would BLOW HER WORLD.
Currently I use a ebay cheapo MP3 player with 1GB memory (the shure headphones costed MORE than the MP3 player haha). It is excellent as it lasts something like 6 hours with 1 AAA battery. And I can carry 3 of those (+1 running the product) without problem.
Anyway, this SD is something I had been looking for. Currently I standarized ALL my hardware to SD. I've got a SD reader that came with my laptop (quite small and neat, it came with the HP Pavillion) and I am really happy with this small cards. I just bought a cheapo SD-mp3 player for a friend and he love it (he is like me a poor with-conscience guy ) he bought a 1 GB SD card.
I really would love that these SD cards could be the new floppy standard. Athough as long as USB is standard, with my SD reader I've got no problem reading anywhere (even some new linux distros support it!)
Oh, but Thailanees (people from Thailand?) are not alone, something similar happened in Mexico in 2002, when Miguel de Icaza and others started promoting the migration to "software libre" in the E-mexico project:
The project, dubbed e-Mexico, was first introduced by the government of Vicente Fox shortly after the ex-Coca-Cola executive took over the presidency in December of 2000. Funding was scarce, though, and the government began to look to corporate players to fill the void.
In fact, some time ago, I read that article (a bit old but still good and impressive for me) about what happened, and I had just read one of those "Microsoft is Bad but Bill Gates is great with his Bill&Melinda foundation" discussions in slashdot.
The truth is that before reading this article I had the belief that well, even tough Microsoft acts bad because it is a corporation, maybe the man and his wife may be better but oh surprise:
Despite general agreement that open-source technologies would be more flexible and cost efficient, Mexico's Linux revolution was quashed after Fox met with Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, according to de Icaza.
"Bill Gates flew down to Mexico, and they announced a donation of $30 million dollars... and Linux was dropped," de Icaza said.
And, to make things worse:
icrosoft has pledged $60 million in software and training to help fund Internet kiosks that are being built in remote communities. The software maker has also allotted $10 million to train workers in small and mid-size businesses, along with an additional grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the country's Vamos México program to be used to move the country's libraries online.
Now, for those of you who does not know, this "Vamo México" program was made by the presidents wife, is is being investigaded by authorities for missuse and corruption .
So, being things as they are here in Mexico (corruption has already rot the system) I am sure Mr. Fox got its piece of Gates cake to maintain MS software. But what I could not stand is the use of the Bill & Melinda foundation on this matters. I've got no respect from this man nor anything related to him.
Sadly enough, I have (right here now in my Fedora Core 4 distribution [abi word 2.6] ) tried to use Abi Word just to find that it renders the documents quite terribly; a lot of text does not shows and the only way to read the text (word/letter spacing is awful) is by using the "print preview" option.
As with a lot of open source projects, the idea is not bad and the spirit is great (I use Kile almost daily so Latex is bread and butter for everyday) but it is not jet usable for me.
Having programming games on the DOS days let me add DirectX. Not only Direct3D but all the other really nice parts of the library that abstract all the multimedia hardware:) [this last comment was for all of the Microsoft bashers that think that DirectX == DIrect3D]
There is no obvious way to shrink the image data itself - file sizes grow huge with just a few small 1" square images. Powerpoint is an even bigger offender here.
Wow, that is plain bullshit. Easy image resizing and cropping is something that has turned me down about OpenOffice. for Which Microsoft Office has convenient toolbaricons.
Those are part of the "small details" that still make OpenOffice unconfortable for me. And as the saying goes, the devil is in the details.
Well, nobody is forcing you to do anything but, there are some albums which are created to listen to them in order (at least if you really want to enjoy it).
Just like films. Do me a favor, go to your nearest Blockbuster and rent any random DVD that you have not seen. Now, instead of playing it all select the "choose chapter" option and watch the chapters in the following order: "5, 4, 7, 3, 1", you skipped chapter 2 and 6 (and if there are more than 7 chapters, all those also). Did the movie made any sense to you?. See, some MUSIC ALBUMS are made the same way. Of course, for those albums the *song* element plays a strong role which will make you enjoy certain "chapter" without having to listen to the whole album just as what happens with video very often.
I always like to put as an example the Scenes from a memory cd from Dream Theater. If you listen to the 8th song "8. Scene Six: Home" and the lyrics will make no sense to you, they might even appear to be crap, but if you listen to the whole album at least once, you will *understand* the mood of the song AND the lyrics.
'A month before delivery, you don't have SPRs,' Azmi said. 'You're making things pretty. . . . You're changing colors.'"
Haha, this guy does not have a clue of what Softwar Engineering is about. Making things pretty is what you do for *the first* preview of your product, that is what you will show to your clients, the pretty screens with pretty buttons that will do things, of course neither the buttons nor the screen do anything more than get their attention and showcase void promises that you will try to fulfill a month before delivery.
That is a limitation of the application and hardware you have, NOT LINUX. You are using cheapy (probably on-motherboard) sound hardware. With such hardware, it is only possible for it to play one stream at a time. Then, the two applications you are using were not written to use (for example) artsd (a sound daemon). If they were written right, they would send their sound to the daemon, not the hardware driver directly. Artsd would mix the multiple streams, and output a single composite stream that your cheap hardware could handle.
I will just cut and paste from my previous comment, you might read it this time:
Guess what, I tried the same thing on Windows xp (clanbomber + winamp) and worked like a charm! cero problemas!
Maybe you did not understand the Spanish, it means Zero Problems. So, Windows XP with my cheap sound chip taht is inside my HP notebook's motherboard, yah I would buy a soundblaster live card but I use the PCMCIA in other hardware AND the sound chip is working fine on Windows XP.
As I stated the programs are the same, the version is the same, the hardware is the same the only difference is the Operating System (I dual boot Ubuntu and Windows XP).
So yeah, we agree in that IS a software problem ("limitation of the application") but then again, the application works fine in other Operating System which means that it is not its fault. Hence, the problem must be the Operating System which is not handling sound in the proper way.
I know what is th eproblem, and I know the problem is in the way Linux handles sound and its legacy sound system that a lot of application are currently run. What I belive is that THAT should be fixed, they could for example route all the sound "petitions" to the old sound system into the sound daemon just to provide an interface for old apps.
But then again the problem exists and is there. Dont try to apologize or justify the errors, dont worry it does not affect you, at the end you do not work for any Linux company and Linus does not pay you no?
Yeah, right. Kids today have it easy. When I was young, there were no such things as save or
Well, you may joke about it but if you played Ninja Gaiden (any of the 3) in the NES you know you had to play somethin glike 3 or 4 hours straight in order to finish the game.
To think that during vacations I used to go trough all the Ninja Gaiden 2 game several times (3 or 4) just to see the cut scenes (why didnt I just recorded them ? haha, well I was 10 year old back then). I spent all the day, no wonder why I am the way I am today =oP
>Time to wake up. Audio on Linux is just as bad as gaming.
Wrong.
Well, not to brake your bubble but, the last time I tried to listen to music while playing a game in Linux it was impossible. I tried nothing too fancy just play Clanbomber while listening to some mp3 with xmms.
Unfortunately it seems you just can have 1 sound output because, if I started the music player first then clanbomber would start without sound, whereas if I started clanbomber first XMMS would spit some kind of error about problem opening the mixer (or something similar).
Guess what, I tried the same thing on Windows xp (clanbomber + winamp) and worked like a charm! cero problemas! I wonder what could I have done wrong?

People from Thailand are called Thai, and so is the language.
:)
Thanks but, how do you call several people from Thailand.
For example, 1 person from mexico is Mexican,
2 or more persons from Mexico are Mexicans
Is the pluar of Thai "Thais" or is it the same "Thai"?
again, thanks

Seriously people, it is not too difficult just to see at the specifications list:

I suppose that the support for all the media types is by converting from whatever media to a compatible type tough
