    N: "Uhh.... ohh... it is, umm, some mates in my office are harassing me and I want corrective action applied against them"

    HRS: "Mmm harassing you, can you be more specific please? I need to tell Ms. [Senior HR Woman] exactly what's going on so that she can see your case"
    N: "uuu mmm ahem, yeah, these guys are sexually harassing me"

    HRS: "OMG that is serious, did they mmm *touch* you?"
    N: "Oh god no no!"
    HRS: "ah ok ok, then, is someone suggesting at you, asking you to do things?"
    N: "no, not at all"
    HRS: "mmm ok, then exactly what is it they are doing to harass you?"
    N: "mmm hmm uu ohh... do you really have to know, can't I tell directly to Ms. H. Boss?"

    N: "Ok... they are saying my waahem... uhm they are saying my penis is small"

    Well... it actually depends what your computer was.

    IIRC long before DIMM and SIMM you *had* to change some things in the BIOS after installing a memory module.

    Hahaha shit... this made me remember how pissed off I got when my brother beat me at SF2 for SNES or before, at those Karate Kid or WWF fighting games at NES. The worst things with those last was that the controllers really sucked ass... or at least that't what I thought, therefore after I got pissed off I threw the controller to the ground.

    Yeah, nowadays I am ashamed and I laugh at that but at that time it was veery frustrating >:(

    So, a Wii 2 would do nothing more than introduce new hardware which they would have to try and get into everyone's homes where there is still so much more to be done with the Wii before it's "old and crappy".

    Well... Nintendo has a history of using exactly that strategy over and over again.

    I have wondered from the first time I went to Scribd, what is the point of it?

    The *only* point I could see of Scribd technology is if it was part of a platform similar to Google docs.

    Not only that... lots of people buy TOASTERS! when an oven will perfectly toast bread slices and also can be used to make cakes, bake poultry and meat! The Grilux even comes with a grill (although you have to solder the grill when you want to use it... but hey, it is open and so convenient).

    Why do people continue buying Toasters?? they are just a bunch of losers and stupid G&E sheeps!

    The majority of geeks can not see the following:

    - With a netbook/notebook you can do 100000000 things, after installing X, Y, Z program and *learning* to use the program etc etc. For "normal" people the "possibility" to be able to do 10000000 things is worth less than...
    - With the iPad you can do 100 things, but they are easy and straightforward to do.

    "normal" people prefer to have the *ability* to do 100 things than the "possibility" of doing a million.

    Really, I have seen some non-tech people coming to me telling me "look, I can do X or Y " with Windows, something that I could do with Linux for some time before... but of course for them that is a non-option.

    Few of the slashdot geeks get this. I get it and although Apple products are not for me (I do not need to pay the 100% markup for the ability to do those 100 things, I can do them in my computer now, or I can *learn* how to do them :), I understand why some people may like Apple products.

    When I wanted to sit on my comfy chair on my deck wrapped in a blanket with a coffee in one hand and /. in the other.

    So, how long did it take to write this message on the iPad?
    I imagine you had to put down your coffee mug, put down the iPad in "notebook position... [d'oh!]" and write... or maybe you "touch typed" with your nose lol.

    Or when I want to just not carry around a 5lb brick everywhere I go when not working.

    netbooks weight at most 1.5 kg :)

    I find this so funny. I remember very clearly about 10 years ago (or so)when all the "enhancing" navigation plugins started to appear (cortona vrml, macromedia flash, macromedia shockwave shit, even java) mainly in the form of ActiveX controls everyone wanted them to go.

    Specially Flash, it was an abomination from the beginning, nobody liked it.

    Now, some people consider not supporting the SWF blob a "problem", it is really funny because usually geeks (the type luring on slashdot) do not like to recognize they were wrong when they loathed flash.

    Now, I do not like Apple so this is not an "apple fanboy" defence (I consider Apple stuff overpriced and *not* for marketed for people like me). But I also do not think the SWF format is really important for the web.

    But the question is WHY would you like to open a PDF inside a browser window...

    I have never understood that and personally I also always disable that "feature" from my web browsers.

    Really, can someone tell me what am I missing by opening a PDF file in a specific pdf reader (like pdfxchange viewer or foxit, or even acrobat reader) instead of inside a web browser window?

    Which part of the word 'and' is confusing you?

    FYI: The word 'and' is monosyllabic and therefore consists of only one 'part'....

    Well, when you learn to count you will realize that the word and is formed by 3 WHOLE LETTERS in total!

    I know some people get confused by the 'n'. For me, the 'd' is the one that gives trouble sometimes.

    Hmm, how many years to bring the rest of the menu buttons back?

    Haha, exactly what I thought, so... in Office 2013 Microsoft will provide the new and exciting (bleeding edge) "Edit" button, which will put all the commands related to the edition of your document in ONE place! (instead of having them mixed in that huge toolbar called the ribbon).

    Then by 2016 you will get the "Insert" button! yay! it has never been easier to insert pictures, movies or objects from other programs (with the new name for OLE).

    I hope I live to see the "Help" button implemented... along with the revolutionary "agent" helper to make it super easy to get help while writing your documents... who knows, it may even be an animated character like mmmh an office supply or an animal.

    Well, it is a well known fact that Google "customer service" sucks HUGE time and is non-existent.

    Especially since the people that use Google Docs or Google mail (remember the story some weeks ago where people had *really* hard time contacting Google to get their accounts back?) or any other Google services are *not* Google customers. Google customers are the people that buy advertising space.

    Now, I have never bought advertising space from Google but I am sure they *do* have a lot of care not to bother these people.

    And not only that, there is *supposed* to be a function to enable opening a document on its own full-blown window by selecting "tools/options/general/Ignore other applications" but if you select that shit it does not work: after you double click on a document to open it (say from Windows Explorer or from outlook or any other program) it will open an empty excel window without opening the file... then you have to additionally drag and drop the file to the newly open window.

    If I was to use an alternative spreadsheet prograrm I would use Gnumeric. I found it actually helped me to do some thigns I could not do in Excel!

    Yeah... Excel sucks in certain ways. Unfortunately in my own experience it has still less little annoyances than OpenOffice calc (and I have both installed in my work computer, I like OO Draw.).

    The benefit I see with of top-posting within the project I am working (11 institution at 7 different countries and about 40 researchers) is that after someone writes 20 people about a certain point, then they can get read the answer directly (the top of the post) and have some other text to follow the conversation between different people.

    Yeah, I know a "forum" will be the best tool for the work, but unfortunately the people do not have the time or willingness to learn yet another technology, that will only be used for this specific project (which works using Plone, maybe the next one will use Wordpress, or Phpforum or whatnot)..

    Email is generic and everybody has learnt to use it. That's why they use it for purposes that it was not envisaged.

    Not only Steam is free, but also opens up the possibility of using a LOT of game programming engines (such as the ones the OP mentioned from Blender).

    Regarding "selling" your idea, I have to agree with everyone else, supply of ideas is vast. You can see that by the huge amount of "game" projects in sourceforge (these were from guys who thought of doing some cool game FOR FREE!).

    Regardging game dev engines it depends on the kind of game you want to make. Blender engine is mostly used for 3D game development. But in that case I would suggest going through Illricht or Ogre3D. For 2D game there is LOVE (http://love2d.org/ ) and there is also Microsoft Direct X of course (containing audio, graphics, input and all other stuff together in one nice package); SDL may also be a good choice.

    Ahh... I see the memory issue is a problem of closed source as well...

    There is a live bug in R which prevents using working with large datasets. I came across this problem after trying to import some SPSS census data we bought for research :(

    You see... the problem I see is that theoretically "System Restore" is a feature of Windows, which has been improved for Windows 7.

    I assume it kind of competes with Apple Time Machine (which I have never used). With the Win7 release, all these "features" are supposed to be available to *non tech savvy* users, like mom and pap (not *your* geek mom and pap of course).

    Now, what happens if this "feature" provided by the OS does not work as expected, or if it has some problem? Mom and pap do not know about "full disk imaging utility" or arconis partitions backups or whatnot.
