Obviously you can't make money by selling the application directly, but you can grant access to the service or sit on it and exploit the fact that you have a *tool* (i.e. a means to an end) that no-one else has.
I found that quote intriguing, maybe it is just a special case of Mexico but usually the way out-of-university Software Engineers do money is by developing POS or similar "tailormade" software for local shops.
Usually such developers sell the program including a service contract for some time after installation but not including the source. In the *very* rare case that the client asks for the source-code, usually he needs to pay an (significant) extra amount of money for it.
I think exactly that would happen if copyright was abolished... however I do not think that would be the norm. People who want to share code and create an "open society" will always exist. Take for example, BSD sharing code. There is people who provide their code with BSD license, and they don't care if someone else uses their code for commercial purpose!
And no way for server admins to track what virus infected bots are trying to break into their systems.
This rule will hurt more than it will help.
I was just thinking, from the following snippet in the summary: IP numbers are protected (in Swedish) since they can be traced to individuals
The bad thing about this statement is that AFAIK one of the main defense points against the MAFIAA tactics is/was that an IP cannot be deffinitely linked to an individual... how does this decision affect that? does it means that now that the highest Swedish court made this explicit, the sue-friendly groups can backup in this assumption?
THAT is hilarious... I like almost all of them, but the one at: this page "####### called and said he has broken his dongle, He would like a replacement"
Global economic meltdown cannot be fixed by computer nerds.
Say that after I make a "trainer" to add +65535 to the important stock exchanges.
fraudulent elections in iran cannot be fixed by computer nerd
That is what *you* think, but with my hax0rs skilz it is trivial to get into Iran's election counting system and make W.Bush the next president of Iran (oh.. you said FIX..., well, maybe W.Bush is not a good choice)
Militants in Pakistan cannot be fixed by computer nerds.
See a story that appeared later than this in slashdot about air drones or UAVs we just need to hang sharks with frickin lasers
North Korea going insane cannot be fixed by computer nerds.
I would not make that statement so general, I think the problem is Kim Jong-il
Tell me about it! Last weekend I visited Buchenwald . All the pictures, wiki articles and films can not prepare you to the feeling you may feel when you are actually *inside* those camps.
From the demo picture, it looks like you need a closed room with air conditioning for the IR system to function properly. This will perfectly feat you current geek basement room (at least for the absence of windows), but what about the average user ?
And worse yet, what about playing in the day... when the sun is looking directly at the windows... or with fluorecent lamps. More than once I have had to close the curtains of my living room while trying to play with the Wii.
Microsoft thinks it can get a piece of the Wii fad pie. Just like the Wii, it won't revolutionize gaming, it will just be a great marketing tool for parents and 30 somethings.
Mom: I don't know son, this new game thingy looks just like your current game thingy with a bigger price tag (enter Wii/Natal) Mom: Oh wow! Futuristic game thingy is surely worth my money! Nintendo/Microsoft: *snicker*
Yup, this completely reflects on an Uncle who is completely computer illiterate and is one of those guys who only let his daughter see 1 hour of TV a day.
He says that he does not let his kids play videogames... except for Wii which has some real value.
Basically, rephrasing what the Prince of Persia guy said was:
Oh no, my game is a total "very pretty" boring piece of shit... if we port it to the Wii, we can not make it pretty, and becomes a boring piece of shit. Damn Wii!
Of course it provides a 'watered down' experience - when the games in question are ports of the PS3 or the Xbox 360. The hardware and capabilities of the machine cannot compare, so the developers have to shoehorn the equivalent game into the Wii's specs and in the process, trim it down. If you look at individual titles made for the Wii (not ports of other console's games) then no, I really don't think the experience is watered down. Games are games, and people (should) be playing them for the enjoyment and competition. Maybe we should ask the question about some other consoles games that rely so much on graphics that the point of the game is lost and the entertainment factor is lost. Is this a watered down games experience?
You almost hit the nail on the head. The most clear example is the comparison between Nintendo own games which are *designed* from the ground up to exploit the interface capabilities offered by the Wii. In addition, the few games made from third parties (e.g. Red Steel) which where designed thinking on the Wii interface capabilities.
That, compared to the dozens of "ports" from other consoles which completely miss the point of the Wii. It would be *super-sweet* (Cartman voice =oP) if for each game a third party plans to port, they would get a dedicated development team to re-think the game *from the ground up*.
Of course the Wii won't offer the same game experience... but IMHO it *could* offer a BETTER game experience (for the same games) than the other consoles if the interface capabilities where well exploited.
Unfortunately for me, that is just wishful thinking, And I am stuck with playing the next mario, zelda, metroid and wii-minigames game.
Would "Wii Bowling" look better at 1080p than at 480i?
Haha, that is exactly the same I thought. I own a Wii and a SD screen and am happy with the screen graphics. However I agree with GP in that the Wii is getting really boring! I just browse along the available games and nothing really draws my attention, nothing makes me *want* to buy it (I see reviews, previews, trailers, in-game videos, etc).
So far, the most use I give to my Wii is using MPlayerCE and Snes9X (now THAT platform has good games, unfortunately not available at VC [yay Battle Toads in Battlemaniacs, Romance of the three kingdoms IV, NBA Jam TE, ISSSDeluxe, etc...,]).
I saw Nintendo's E3 conference and was really disappointed because the brand new "outstanding innovation" in gaming was... simultaneous multiplayer mario bros... and a pulse meter o geez!
Don't you see guys? this "franknagy" (nagy@fnal.gov) post is just a cheap MAFIAA attempt to get to know the U-know what- services that we use to warez^H^H^H^H download our Linux ISOs!!
And at this time, you have provided a very comprehensive list of service providers to sue...
remember... the FIRST rule of U-know-what is... you DO NOT talk about it!
I know several people who HATE flying because- even though they understand intellectually that flying is much safer than driving-
The issue I have with this "fact" is that it is based in probabilities and average, which can be very deceptive.
Try to follow me for a minute:
The general consensus is that the probability of dying in a car accident is much higher that the probability of dying in a plane accident.
However, if I am pondering the option of going from Berlin to Frankfurt by plane or by car, I should modify the probability according to the previous data on accidents that happened in the road I plan to travel (between Berlin and Frankfurt). This fact will make driving safer than say, traveling from Mexico city to Tijuana, given the condition of the road, the fact that people in Germany are required to have better driving skills, etc. Finally, we can add the fact that I may drive at about 90Kph (and wear a seatbelt).
It is after considering those factors that I can really calculate a better probability of having a car accident AND dying there.
Compare that to a plane... in which the factors won't change no matter were you are, or worse, other factors that a person cannot control which increase the probability of having an accident. In addition, it would be interesting to know the probability of *dying* given that you have an accident in an airplane... I expect that to be higher than in cars.
I do not have trouble with flying (I do it maybe twice a year), however this idea has been roaming through my mind for some time...
For the same reason we'll allow tens of thousands to die every year in auto accidents due to driver error but we'd never consider automating driving because maybe somebody might die every year or two due to a computer error.
Oh, bull. No-one has seriously considered automated driving anywhere you'd see it in a consumer environment because it's a lot harder than it sounds, harder than automated flying, harder than automa...didn't touch on the kind of obstacles and traffic that a major US city has
I won't be so quick to call bullshit on that. I am aware of an example where society exchanged a more accurate computer based decision support system because letting a computer make an error would put the blame in the machine and not in the individual...
MYCIN was never actually used in practice. This wasn't because of any weakness in its performance. As mentioned, in tests it outperformed members of the Stanford medical school faculty. Some observers raised ethical and legal issues related to the use of computers in medicine â" if a program gives the wrong diagnosis or recommends the wrong therapy, who should be held responsible?
Are you suggesting that the reason we can't communicate with squids is because scientists have been trying to make love to them all these years? Instead of sharing intelligence?
Or did I misread something? Because that's the most disgusting thing I've ever heard.:)
I still cannot see why should I be entitled to pe paid for a product that my father/grandfather or grand-grand-grand father did. When I make a painting (or a game, or a program, or whatnot) I establish the price how I want to sell it. If people like one of my products and they pay 100000000000000000 for it, then I may sell the subsequent product I do closely to that price...
Making games for the PS3 and 360 requires a significant investment - we're talking millions of dollars. Trying to get the game to break even is hard enough,
[emphasis mine]
Sure, but that is exactly how they will improve with that [GP] pricing scheme. As an example, right now I have 4 Wii games in my list of "want to buy", however they are 43, 35, 25 and 16 EURO (and that is from a "cheap" internet based seller, street prices are between 30 and 60).
I have not bought them becase I cannot afford to put 40 EURO, however if they where between 7 and 30 EURO, I am sure I would have bought them by now.

This is why most good programmers will stop contributing to the global community because there are those who will steal their work
Does not compute

Thanks for the laugh croddy.
Dear pirates--if copyright law is wrong, then the GPL has no legal standing.

Don't Worry, since KDE, KDevelop, etc... slashdotters have get used to the idea that if it is a ".0" release, then it is crappy.

y, I'd love to see a natal "Punchout" game, where you actually had to punch and dodge.
I remember having seen similar type of games for Arcades (I *think* it was from Sega, although I am not sure) some time ago (maybe 7 years?).
Aside from being an interesting gimmick, it gets old very fast.
Really nice comment, I completely agree with you.

have you even seen Project Natal for teh 360 yet. It makes the Wii look like playing with paper dolls.
ZOMGWTFBBQ!!!11 AMAZING. LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!111eleven

BLakey Rat, present you with Rule 34
Thanks for posting this, indeed the droit de suite concept is interesting. However, I do not agree with it:
From wikipedia
According to Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, droit de suite was created in France following the sale of Millet's famous 1858 painting, the Angélus, following the First World War. The owner of the painting made a huge profit from this sale, whereas the family of the artist lived in poverty. Many artists, and their families, had suffered from the war, and droit de suite was a means to remedy socially difficult situations. [2]
I still cannot see why should I be entitled to pe paid for a product that my father/grandfather or grand-grand-grand father did.
