  12. Filesharing of music is legal in Canada on RCMP Won't Go After Personal Filesharers · · Score: 1
This article is misleading. It's not illegal in Canada to copy music for personnal use since 1998. Shame on this journal for implying otherwise. Selling copy of copyrighted work is illegal, but still, filesharing do not fall into this category.

Before the Copyright Act was amended in 1998, copying any sound recording for almost any purpose infringed copyright, although, in practice, the prohibition was largely unenforceable. The amendment to the Act legalized private copying of sound recordings of musical works onto audio recording media - i.e., the copying of pre-recorded music for the private use of the person who makes the copy. In addition, the amendment made provision for the imposition of a levy on blank audio recording media to compensate authors, performers and makers who own copyright in eligible sound recordings being copied for private use.

Once a space elevator is in place, I think the main cost would be energy and then safety/mechanical inspection. Both would cost far less compare to a space shuttle. The design of a "lifter" would be far simpler than the design of the million components space shuttle, hence much simpler to repair and inspect. It would also suffer less from the stress of the launch.

I don't see how, once build, a space elevator could cost more than a space shuttle.

  19. Re:Could you go over the economics? on The Financial Future of Space Travel · · Score: 1

It would be much more efficient to send a payload to space using a space elevator compare to a rocket. Simply because a traditional rocket launch is mostly a giant fireworks. You get a lot of noise and a lot of heat but not much uplift power. With a space elevator we would have almost no lost of energy, all the energy would be converted to gravitational potential energy.

You should not use Flops to estimate code breaking time. Flops mean FLoating point Operation Per Second. Code breaking is mostly done using integer calculation, so you should estimate a timeframe of completion using integer operation per second with something like the Dhrystone benchmark.

I don't see why anyone would think this tax would be a good idea. After all, if a compagny thinks that music downloaded from online store are going to get rip, why don't they just raise the price? Plus, how do you distribute fairly the amount of money raised by the tax? IMHO, the song that get downloaded the most get the largest piece of the pie. From my point of view, it seems the same as raising the price tag for a song.
