  1. Re:Hardware DRM Serves One Purpose on New Consortium to Push UDI and Include DRM · · Score: 1

With that analogy in mind what I think people are afraid of is this type situation:

motherboard without firewire OR a camcorder without firewire (assuming you simply want to use USB) they will refuse to work together.

Without both sets having 'standard based DRM enabling chips', regardless of use/nonuse, they won't work with each other.

Would you accept a camcorder (with Firewire) that won't work with a motherboard (Without firewire) when you only use USB? Maybe I'm misreading the situation, but that's how I understand the FUD situation.

And honestly, I can believe the industry would attempt this. Sony is a prime example of how far Big Brother will go in their fight against 'piracy'.

I hope I'm making sense with this, i just woke up lol. But any sort of forced DRM Scheme is not something that I would tolerate personally... it's the reason i don't buy music anymore. Just my 2c tho.

(Can you output to Component/SVideo without converting? Is there a card that does that?)

Split the screen 2/3/4 ways (Insert obligitory 'only chance for a /.er to get a 3way' joke here), Picture in Picture, Picture by Picture, up/down-convert, etc

And all of these while having the needed TV recording capabilies that I've never had before (I've only started looking at recording DirectTV and looks like more trouble than its worth lol)

Maybe I'm asking for too much flexibility or convinience?

Of course... I want to built it myself starting with parts I have (2 desktops, 2 laptops and various bits and pieces) and I haven't even decided to go Media Center or MythTV (or both? I do have 2 desktops lol)

Ahh well... if you find out anything on how to add flexibility to input/output I'd love to know.

And not play modernish games? Hell... that's the only reason to upgrade regularly (outside of buisness needs or shaving 30 seconds off of a dvd rip or what not) You obviously haven't seen the difference in FEAR between a AMD 3200 with a GeForce5900 (top of the line when I got it) and a AMD64 3500+ GeForce 6600... Wait three years? Pffffft

I haven't rtfa yet so I dont' know, but my assumption is that a specialty motherboard like this WON'T be in the bargain bin. So you'll end up paying more for the motherboard to start with (Again: this is an assumption - as soon as I CAN read the article I will)

Personally, I doubt that 4x$100 cards will outperform 1x$500 card, much less 2x$250 cards (for the obviously more available SLI setup). Maybe benchmarks on the article will correct me, but with lab benchmarks you can alway count on inflation so I'd have to wait before I trusted them.

Last but not least... I love new technology... but I know the support isn't great acrost the board for SLI yet.... Is that support going to carry over for 3+ card setups? Will the same drivers work or is it going to take a massive overhaul? What worth is a 4 card setup that don't work with HL2, Halo, Unreal, etc? And support for those apps would undoubtedly come long before support for CAD and other buisness related apps. Or am I wrong?
