Thanks for your interest in Google Earth, but we're sorry we can't offer you a download right now. As you know, Google Earth is in beta, and we're still building out our ability to take on new users. We're making good progress, and expect to be able to accept new downloads shortly, so we recommend you check back daily at earth.google.com. We hope to be able to welcome you and other new planet surfers soon.
I see the comments are already filled with "What do you expect its microsoft!!!" and "Hah! hacked b4 its out!!!" comments... This is just speculation about a potential vulernability, in a feature that is not even in a beta in an OS that is not even in beta. Cripes, at least wait until it's out before rushing to any judgements...you know you all use Windows anyways.
I agree its a very high price, certainly not an impulse buy, and definitely will get an evil look from wife as christmas present. But there is this little thing called inflation, which i think they are adjusting for. The original NES was what like $200 in 1985? (I think thats what i paid for it in 87' at least). If you adjust for inflation it looks like that would be around $350 today...and I think the NES may have started a little more expensive then $200 (of course it also came with a game and other crap). But I think that is the main reason, you can't compare past and present prices.
The motives of the company that is sueing them is questionable, but I think it is good in that it brings to light how common click-fraud is. Google may have had a token lawsuit or two, but their fundamental model is still flawed when it comes to preventing click fraud. Even their own CFO talks about how it is a real problem. Google can't solve the problem by suing people, and it is a real hassle to try to track down and report all the fraud to Google and hope for a credit. I think this is positive because maybe it will at least nudge Google into showing they are doing more to prevent this, but how hard will they really try if supposedly 30% of the clicks are fraudulent? If they eliminated those, they would lose 30% of their ad revenue.
Well the Xbox S controller vs the playstation dual shock for one....the trigger is in the same position where my fingers would naturally grip the controller, so my fingers never leave the triggers. The shoulder buttons on the Dual Shock requires one to lift their index fingers from the natural resting position and click a flat long button which feel nothing like the trigger of a gun, nor does if have as much throw as a Xbox trigger (which works well for giving varying amounts of gas in racing games)
Chris, are you making that statement as a representative of Google? If so you might want to be careful given what happened to Mark Jen. I'm sure you as the Open Source director agree with this hack, but perhaps the people in the Google Video dept that planned on making some money with this idea don't quite feel the same way?
I don't see any indication that Yahoo News is automatically pulled from major sites in the same manner that Google is.
Well that's because its not. Google does not pay for AP/Reuters/Knight Ridder, etc... syndication, so Google can not publish the content of news stories on their own web pages, instead they just have a bunch of news web sites they scan the content for and link. Yahoo gets it's news in the same way as the Washington Post or your local news, but instead of rewriting it, it just post the raw news feeds. This way it can directly get advertising money on the news pages themselves.
Do you have any evidence that a human being is not involved in the story selection/ranking process or that there is no way that Yahoo News could modify as necessary?
No, though I have no evidence that Google does this either besides their "word". I would only say that if you look at the Yahoo news homepage, and the AP homepage, the stories are in the exact same order, so I am guessing that the AP gives them the importance of each news article, after all there are thousands a day, individual people can't be sorting through them. And finally Yahoo hasn't given any special high ranking to the Google hack story, it is buried down in the Tech section and is only the 4th one listed.
BAH!!! Yahoo News is not a News Agency, cripes it just grabs a feed from the freakin' AP and Reuters, I can't believe how many posts like yours have been modded up! Yahoo creates no more original news content then Google does, its just wire feeds...except in Yahoo's case they actually host the context. It doesn't even give precedence to stories based on their own politics, it shows stories in order of popularity, cripes.
He has a $10,000+ reserve and he couldn't post a single picture of the collection? No way would i pay that much without at least seeing the huge pile of stuff at least.
Dual shock certainly has passed the test of time, but I really like the GameCube and Xbox S controllers better, the Xbox feels great in my hands for video games, though my hands ache after lots of play. The triggers on the Xbox S work so much better then the awkward shoulder buttons on the dual shock, using triggers for driving games really gives an added sense of realism (think pulling foot on an off pedal). And of course for shooters it feels more realistic too.
This plutonium is sorely needed to aid in our national defense. Thanks to treaties signed by some nancy pants presidents of the past we are only down to a measly 4,000 or so ICBMs.
Well then also for the record I agree with both of your purchases, despite the better reliability of a Hyundai or better features of another mp3 player, both a Toyota and an iPod have significantly higher resale value. And while a Toyota Corolla might not get you +5 style points with a chick (maybe a mini is a better comparison with an iPod), a Hyundai will most definitely get you -5 style points;).
Isn't it possible that the average joe buys an iPod because they've heard that they're pretty good?
Well, thats the thing...a reputation preceeds both, and sometimes that reputation makes people not even research other alternatives. So maybe the 1st or 4th gen iPod was great and everyone raved, but that doesn't mean something better hasn't came out since by a competitor. The Toyota thing is a perfect example, they have a great reputation for reliability, but if you look at the actual numbers, their reliability has taken a hit in recent years, while companies that most people think of as shoddy such as Hyundai have risen to the top in reliability....I think products like the iRiver are like the Hyundai, they offer as many features as the corolla, are cheaper, but in the end, they just won't get you any style points with the chicks.
Is it just me or does it appear not to work in Firefox? I clicked the play button and nothing happened...tried again in IE and it took me to the video viewer download page....anyone else get it to work in FF?
Well currently Microsoft already offers mapping for Europe and Brazil, which Google doesn't. It also offers more detailed satellite imagery for these parts of the world. Google really only beats it currently in its AJAX implementation.
Unfortunately no adult content is one of their rules...what the hell else would i want to download? You and your friends doing skateboard tricks? No thanks!
Yahoo offers the best financial quotes and best personalized portal from my experience...what do you recommend thats better? (Even google links to Yahoo's finance section as its primary stock quote lookup deal)
I get this message:

On a side note, Google has suspended downloads of the Free Google Earth. (Anyone else notice how damn slow it is now? Stop using it when i am people!)

Yahoo News is not a news agency, its just a feed from the Associated Press or Reuters. Yahoo hosts the content from the feeds, that is all.
Well considering the minimum requirements for Google's Video viewer are:
System Requirements Windows 2000 or later with latest updates installed;
Don't bother patching, because you cant run the program to begin with.
He has a $10,000+ reserve and he couldn't post a single picture of the collection? No way would i pay that much without at least seeing the huge pile of stuff at least.
No...i was comparing a controller trigger button to firing a gun... both have triggers see.

Its not Google branded, but you can tie into a GPS with Google Earth Pro.
Maybe because I was being facetious.

In the meanwhile, pornlovers will have switched over, and M$ will be looking pretty useless.
Then Google becomes the new evil monopoly, Slashdotters start bitching about G00G and how they are evil.
I'm quite confident Google didnt actually approach this guy, but he does raise all the same points that the Google Video TOS does appear vague on.
World coverage in high resolution?
