This means it's back to stones and rocks as far as near-future tech is concerned? Or are we going to get a C&D for constructing a calculus with pebbles?
Whenever interplanetary human space travel is possible, I'll be the first to start a rebel colony somewhere on Mars that opposes copyright law, patents and major corporations.
It's more like a fine you're paying whether or not you downloaded illegal content. Basically, in Belgium everyone who owns a pc is consider a criminal. In return for the tax, you have the right to make home copies of your own collection. Only problem is: we already have that right to make our own copies.
Moreover, we in Belgium are already paying a tax to compensate pirate losses: the price of every storage medium (going from HD's tot DVD's) has a tax on it besides VAT. The money goes to a company called Uradex which redistributes it under artists. In reality: they make millions of euro's but at the moment the memberartists only have seen 300.000 euros. And it's not the downloaders who pay the most: it's companies who do a lot of data storage without downloading one single byte of illegal content that are paying Uradex. Simply put: It's a scam.
Besides, today we learned that SABAM is being sued for not paying up fast enough. The justice department even suspects fraud and corruption. I guess they put the money on a bankaccount or invest it so they make outreagous profit from the interest.
In total: Belgian taxation on computers includes in the véry near future:
- VAT (21%)
- PC Tax
- Recycling tax (yes, we pay because obsolete computers are damaging to the environment)
- Storage tax (taxes on storage media)
Don't get me started on all the other taxes (social security, environmental 'green' taxes,...) we have to pay. When the liberals (center-right) took over five years ago they promised to cut taxes down...
Basically we're being robbed by our own government.
... welcome our new alien comrades with spywareblockers, adblockers, galactic antivirusprograms, alternative plaform independent browsers and decent torrents with alien pr0n.
Now astronauts (or kosmonauts or taikonauts or whatever gets first over there) don't have to take ice with them if they want to have a whisky on the rocks.
Hmm... maybe I could start a first "bar galactica" and make tons by selling spacetourists stiff drinks at high rates.
"Joe, one lump of frozen ice in my drink if you please!"
It already had taken a turn for the worst some 1000 years ago. Last time we invaded them was with the great crusades around 1000A.D. Then thousands were murdered in the name of God and Faith. Just like we are not forgetting they Shoah, they sure didn't forget the crusades.
So today, when I hear Americans saying "westernizing/american values" and "God bless America" in one sentence, a shiver is going through my back because that's already enough for muslims to get on the tips of their toes.
All in all, I would agree if you talk about westernization as imposing the respect for human rights. But not if it's about not respecting their way of life.
Hm. Not that I'm totally against emulating... but why don't ppl switch over 100% to *nix? If you can handle wine, you sure can handle a good alternative like OOo instead of emulating SM Office.
Okay, now I *know* this is a blunt statement to make: some *have* to work in an SM environment at work but don't want to give up on their 100% linuxness at home just so they can process an order or finish a report in Word or Excel properly. Wine is indeed a good alternative. Still, I don't see how emulating heretic software is going to help our crusade against the heathens from Redmond.
This is just another great example of how monopolistic behaviour from a few at key positions can affect everyone. It's a war and we are in the middle of it!
My brother is your stereotypical pc abuser. The thing is piled up with spyware, malware, virusses,... If it's downloadable, he'll try it. Basically. Needless to say: performance on his machine get's shot to hell in the 30 minutes after I ghost his machine with a clean image (I should call the I A-Team to do a normal system cleanup) So to make things worse, he has the habit of banging on the sides of case whenever 'the thing goes slow'. Once, his puter died on me. The moment I took it up, I noticed a 'rattling sound': the whole shebang got loose. The soundcard did a 69 with the videocard and I won't get into the awkward position of both hard drives. I fitted everything back in place but I neglected to put the (heavily bend) sideplates back in. An hour or so later: we could hear a loud 'banging' noise coming from my brothers chamber: he couldn't kick the side so he went over to 'bang on the top' of the machine.
I'm still surprised he didn't use any auxilaries like axeshaped firestones, heavy bones and the like. My guess would be: the neolithicum is just something that happened to other people as far as he is concerned... *sigh*
As long as it is just precious yet unkown and therefore undervalued ecosystems with endangered species and third world countries that owe big sums of money to us... we should't care too much.
Now, I feel like takin' a drive with my whoop-ass humvee, spilling several liters of gas and producing some extra CO2 gas just so I can get a McDonalds - who happens to sponsor deforrestation - happy meal. Call me cynical but I don't think things will get better very soon.
Windows XP looks like a Fisher-Price toy unless you alter it to something better.
By something better: you mean playmobil?
Why is it, that certain developers assiociate the concept of an intuïtive GUI with a tool that has the complexity of bashing two rocks together? Don't get me wrong here, usability is an issue. But I'd rather use a complex yet logical tool that get's the job done then a mindnumbing tool that's plain insulting for Man's intelligence.
What about JAVA? At university, I learned OOP in java at university. For me, the step to C(++) from java wasn't that big. And my knowledge of PHP helped me a great deal to understand those basics in JAVA.
Going from Java to VB: now there's a big leap! I bought me some VB.net books (discounts!). By golly! I'm glad I started of in java and PHP. Feels like I'm all starting over again in VB.
Besides, even though JAVA isn't strictly GPL, at least it's platform independent. I don't have to port my crap Jabber IM cli client to work in either windhose or lunix.
"The executive board at NASA has *finally* agreed to screen manned space flight recruits for boulemia"
"Russian scientists take a look at cannibalism as a viable option to sustain a manned mission to Mars"
This could have a positive effect on natural selection.
Killing the weak in an early stage guarantees even less spilled resources and greater environmental sustainability that the strong amongst us can enjoy.
The worst we can get these days are annoying text messages containing ads.
Imagine the possibilities of combining polyphone ringingtunes, stunning visuals on high resolution screens and this 1gbit up/downlink facility for the advertising/marketing industry.
My guess for the future: a serious amount of spam, ads, adware on your cellular would be part of the forseeable future.
Why ads over cellular? Because this technology wouldn't be commercially sustainable without.
Now. Can you say "This call is proudly sponsored by Heineken/Coca-Cola/..."

I live in Belgium too.

"Scotty, I need more power!"
I can see the package already in front of me: "Uses Altair TimeTravel Technology(tm)"
They should try patenting Boolean logic and affiliates in one big go instead of doing it one operator at a time.

Did they got those bombs via eBay after overbidding Iran?

Nuff said. Maybe Bill should order "bash-2.05a$ pizza_party --olives --mushrooms --pepperoni --pineapple 2 medium regular"

If I have to fry my brain, I'd rather prefer it 'bien cuit' over 'bleu'.

An african swallow carrying a coconut perhaps?
