There are ways around everything. Much like email addresses can be harvested, so can IP addresses. Instead of willingly posting an email address to a site, all you would have to do is connect to an untrusted website and you've subscribed to the worm channel. Connect to a P2P application and somebody will be listening.

Besides, not all 128 bits of the address are going to be random. If i recall correctly, half is network and half is host. That would make scanning a network on par with scanning a class B network.

Its only fair. Anytime any 3rd party application on Windows causes a problem, it must be the operating system's fault for allowing the user to do it. It looks like Linux allowed a user to do something you didn't expect.

The way I read the article, it has nothing to do with programming, but with the electronics in the environment.

    From TFA:

John Callas, project manager for the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., explained that a dead rover battery could allow cold temperature to maim Opportunity's electronics.

"It's like leaving your laptop out in an Antarctic winter," Callas said. "Soldered joints in the electronics can contract due to thermal contraction. If a rover gets too cold, something essential will fail." Callas explained the situation is unprecedented, so the team isn't certain how much more light-blocking dust the rovers-especially Opportunity-can take.

Sarcastic Microsoft bash aside, all of the listed services are those that require connection to an external source. The "windows time service" makes me a bit suspicious that the author just picked everything that made any form of network communication without regard to information sent/received.

    On Windows time service:

The following list describes various aspects of Windows Time Service data that is sent to and from the Internet and how the exchange of information takes place:

Port: NTP uses User Datagram Protocol (UDP) port 123 on time servers. If this port is not open to the Internet, you cannot synchronize your server to Internet NTP servers.

Protocol: The service on Windows Vista implements NTP to communicate with other computers on the network.

The NTP Protocol is described here. I can't verify that they haven't implemented the evil NTP protocol (not running Vista), but I don't see why i should trust the author after listing this one.

I wouldn't say that the thread is off-topic. Slashdot is filled with many Linux users. The news is here. Google cooks up Google Desktop on Linux, and the Linux community responds by sending it back to the kitchen because they didn't receive a copy of the recipe along with it.
