I don't want 70 pounds of food and "supplies". How about 5 pounds of food, 5 pounds of supplies, and 60 pounds of THICK ARMOR. Like level 58 paladin type invulnerable shit.

Now, for the domestic version, that's where you might have something going with the food. If Cops could carry 70 pounds of donuts, they'd only have to stop at Dunkin D's twice a day.

How about start with giving everyone proper education and mandating a certain level of nutrition from mcdonalds and other places that live off the poor. Then when those people can get good jobs, then take the rug away, not while they're standing on it.

THANK YOU. I've been saying that forever. I think the main problem in our whole perspective on AI is that we're trying to make these perfect machines. I think that setting up a very wide array of things the machine can try and a clever set of rules for what's bad and good and then allowing it to make tons of mistakes and learn from them would be something more along the right path. But that may be cost prohibitive since the robot may decide to jump off a cliff.

3.) I think this whole issue is moot because it's not how many women are going into CS it's how many attractive women are going into CS. From experience, almost all the girls at my college going into CS as a serious career were really hot. So... what's all the fuss about?

holy crap dude, if all you said is really true, you're pretty smart. Also, if that is the case, and from the tone of your post, I'm assuming that you're involved with immunology. So you have a problem selling this type of research to potential investors and business partners? Maybe I have an idea: I have no idea of the technical aspects of the following, IANAD-HNEFC (I am not a doctor - heh, not even freakin close).

What if you sell it by saying that research into this field will not only prove beneficial to killing cancer but will also prove beneficial to killing HIV, because HIV is a disease that kills the immune system (lol, wow, only a business person would believe in that connection). Use the words "killing" and use AIDS instead of HIV. Repeat these words with a loud megaphone directly into the ears of the business and marketting people. Killing Cancer and AIDS sells. Studying immunology in order to find out why cancerous cells that are communicating with the immune system are being ignored does not sell.

Anyway, best of luck to you, and I didn't meant to sound too trivial in the above, just trying to explain that marketing is not about what's right, it's about what's louder.

I've read the posts here and I can point you to one source that I know is accurate, easy to understand and in my opinion beautiful:

    N. David Mermin

This man is a genius. He can also explain his genius which makes him quite unique. I took a class of his and actually understood some stuff. His basic goal is to explain quantum computation to CS students. More on topic, here's the skinny on qubits:

Chapter 1 of his intro class

I really wouldn't do justice to the ease with which he explains things to attempt to summarize, but hey, what's slashdot for:

Basically skip ahead to part C if you want to jump right into it. It helps if you think of Classical bits as vectors in a two dimensional space. (0,1) and (1,0) would represent 0 and 1 as we normally think about them. So then think about Quantum bits (qubits) as (a,b) which is just a superposition of the two classical bits with amplitudes a and b which are complex scalars. The only condition is that the qubit is a unit vector in two dimensional complex vector space, or in short |a|^2 + |b|^2 = 1. Now more to the point of this thread, if you go to section 1..62 you can see that n qubits make up a computational basis (or classical basis). So, the answer is, there's not really anything like simple 0,1 states for qubits. The truth is more complicated but once you start looking at how to take advantage of qubits, a lot more beautiful in my oppinion.

They make a lot of money on Office 12 and they listened to people like you but decided to ignore them for a good reason. Office 12 will not fail and if it will it won't be for the reasons you mentioned.

That being said, their new interface is truly awesome but not new. Products like Dreamweaver have had this interface for a long time. People are used to Dreamweaver and therefore this may not be a big change for most of them. I personally am happy they went with this interface change and i would like to see more people in the Open Source community rethink interfaces in great ways instead of playing catch-up with other OSes (GNOME = MAC, KDE = Windows). Kudos to Fluxbox and XFCE and others for sticking out of the pack.
