  1. Re:This problem has killed Roleplaying imho on The Future of Persistent Worlds In MMOs · · Score: 1, Interesting

How about a game where the player that achieves the great status becomes the next target for the player behind him? Good/evil alignments would fight each other for mobs/quests and higher status players become higher level targets. Roleplaying could become a bigger deal and make more sense. Keep track of everyone that has anything to do with _MOB_X_ and if those players associated all quit, bring _MOB_X_ back into the game, recycled like. heck, have quests where you bring 20 healers with you and resurrect _MOB_X because you are aligned the same as that mob. I think there are numerous ways to handle it,but I suppose it comes down to development time/cost..

how many people here have actually USED a vertical mouse? I have. I was to the point at work where within 5 minutes of using a mouse my wrists would begin tingling and my fingers would start to go numb. I switched to a vertical mouse and the relief was IMMEDIATE. However, you do need to 'learn' how to use the thing, which takes a few days to get used to it...and it feels much different than a normal mouse. There is also an accuracy and speed cost...I would not recommend a vertical mouse for gaming. What I ended up doing was using the vertical mouse at work only, then I woud switch back to a normal mouse at home for gaming.
There is no 'snake oil', repetetive mouse movements can really start to hurt. Vertical mice definately do relieve a lot of the stress involved with moving the mouse and clicking the buttons, but at a cost of accuracy/speed. Now if they started claiming to *cure* RSI, it would be a different story.

Way to troll... I'd never be thankful that the problems with software require me to spend more time with it. I didn't sign up on my job to "deal with bugs in software", I signed up to administer the damn thing. If the software worked the way it is supposed to, I'd have a hell of a lot more time to do more productive things, and a hell of a lot less stress. And I'm not speaking of Oracle specifically, this applies to ALL software. The less time and effort spent on the vender's part making software work and work well, the more time administrators spend fixing it. People seem to think that bugfixing = good job. You fail to realize that this effort could be better spent elsewhere, such as innovating new solutions that would make our jobs even more efficient. Would this put some of us out of our current jobs? Sure! And I'd be damned happy because it would free us up to pursue more innovative and hopefully more efficient technologies.

In other words, we're spinning our wheels in the mud of flawed software.

Same here. Grew up on Atari, Collecto, Intellivision, Nintendo as a kid, and Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, Decent, a plethora of other shooter clones that came out in the 90's in my teens. FPS was a lot of fun, and very much a groundbreaking and exciting thing. But now it is pretty much old hat, a standard if you will. But it is definately getting better. I loved HL2 when it came out because of the better graphics, storylines, and overall immersion it offered. DM is fun as well, in small chunks of time. But DM type play has lost it's luster. This is where games like Everquest (and now Everquest II) stepped up and brought so much more to the plate. Not only do you get the DM type play, but many storylines, unique experiences (tradeskilling, raiding), and overall just more DEPTH than the old point and click and fire a rocket up your buddy's ass type play. I think people my age (late 20's early 30's) grew up in a very interesting time, we got to see games go from 8-bit Atari, kilobyte memory games to games requiring gigs of memory and huge amounts of processing power. What a trip it's been! I know it's only going to get better and better. I can't wait to see what comes out after Everquest type games become status-quo. Maybe a Second Life-Everquest type mash-up where you can create your own items/monsters/whatever and then grab a group of your friends and go raid =).

The system I run is very very quiet, and remains pretty damn cool for about a day if i'm gaming a lot, or many days if i'm not. Yeah, there's the risk of it getting a leak, but so far so good, and I'm very happy with it. I'm water cooling my CPU/GPU/RAM and 3 scsi hdd's.
