This is one of the things I love about the AMD Am3 platform, the majority of their boards support ECC right out of the box. Its great for building low cost file and media servers,$25 for an Athlon 65w X4 and $40 for a 4 slot board that supports 32gb of ECC and there ya go, low cost file/media server. Slap on a passive heatsink and stuff it in a case with dual top mounted fans and you have a system you can just stuff in a closet and forget about.
As for TFA I'm personally shocked that 500Gb HDDs are still the norm on the low end PCs, its not like the OEM HDD manufacturers are saving any money making a 500Gb versus a 1TB so hopefully they'll be able to get rid of 500Gb being the baseline.

The last month I was on Ting it ended up costing me nearly $60 for minutes and data and I really don't use my phone that often, all it took was a sick relative and being stuck in the hospital waiting to find out what was going on to blow through the cash on their service. I want to be able to use my phone without having to worry about some unexpected event raising my costs so I ended up going to Cricket, its $70 for 2 phones with unlimited talk and text and 2.5Gb of data which I've found is plenty for watching YouTube when I'm stuck waiting somewhere.

I can't say as I blame 'em as I decided to run my own little experiment and watch Iron Man 3 in both 3D at the Cinema 8 and 2D at the old movie house and the 3D gave me a skull thumper about halfway into the movie which lasted for about an hour afterwards while enjoying the 2D version in those classic opera house style seats with a big tub of popcorn? It was just a damned nice movie experience. Now I won't bother, if it doesn't come to the old movie house? Why not use molten salt for power storage? I remember that was being seriously looked into for storing wind and wave energy, you heat it with some of your excess when you are cranking out the power and then use the salt to power a generator at night or during cloudy conditions.

You can run the browser and applications in a sandbox in Windows 7 and not have the baked in malware of Windows 10. I'm sorry but there is nothing you can say that can mitigate the fact that Windows 10 takes control away from the user and is sending encrypted data to a party out of your control.
Now where have I seen that before, software that is out of control of the user, hides itself,sends encrypted or obfuscated data, and constantly changes to keep from being disabled or removed? Oh yeah...MALWARE.

I guess you missed it but a good 90% of the Gamespy games got patches to switch to Steam, in fact was just playing some Borderlands I MP and that game was Gamespy, the few that weren't patched by the company? Gameranger added support so you can just use that.
Then when you figure in the backwards compatibility, how GoG has launched Galaxy to give MP support to all the great old games they have, complete with MMing and chat, and how you can play anybody on the planet, no publisher choosing what region is allowed to play? I'm sorry but there is no comparison and console gamers really need to tell the big 3 they aren't gonna put up with this nickel and diming horseshit. Sadly console gamers have been getting fucked by the big three so long they won't even think about it. They'd bring in their PC after getting it back from GS because it was running worse than before and it would be one of those HPs or Compaqs where the parts was listed on the side and you'd open it up and RAM would be missing (one even ripped the plastic retainers out the board snatching RAM),their expensive GPU card would be swapped for a cheap shitty one, any really expensive desktop parts that went through that GS was at real risk of getting magically downgraded.
But I can honestly say if a cop showed up at the shop I have no clue if a PC I'm working on has CP on it or not because unless they tell me to back up their personal folders? I'm not going in there. I've always looked at it like being a plumber, you hire me to fix your sink NOT go through your underwear drawer and that is all I'm gonna do, I don't need to access your personal folders to get to the system files I need to fix the thing.

Why not use molten salt for power storage? I remember that was being seriously looked into for storing wind and wave energy, you heat it with some of your excess when you are cranking out the power and then use the salt to power a generator at night or during cloudy conditions.
Its cheap, no risk of it going ka boom, you can store it underground which should keep the NIMBYs happy and its not like you are gonna "wear out" the salt no matter how you use it. There are even solar power towers already up and running using molten salt so we know that it works, sounds like a winner to me.

The "source equals security" fallacy is a fallacy of assumption, you assume because the code is there someone has done the work for you and vetted these millions of lines of code with zero actual evidence that it has actually occurred and in fact vulnerabilities like Heartbleed, Bash weaknesses that have sat there for years and the plethora of Linux targeted malware including commercial attacks give plenty of evidence that the opposite is true and the majority of code isn't looked at beyond whomever is actually working on the thing.
I think Windows 10 is a giant POS where the only thing that runs reliably is its baked in spyware (which makes it similar to Android so if Nutella is trying to copy Google? They have opened everything up except for the hardware decoders and HDCP, neither of which they own. They have anounced they are keeping the proprietary codebase up until the FOSS driver has feature parity then it'll be replaced. As it is now you can choose to go FOSS and have a couple of features not ready for prime time or the proprietary drivers, which again is 1 more choice than Nvidia gives you.
