Finally nobody is talking about the environmental costs which are gonna be staggering. look at newegg and Tiger and you'll see the majority of the routers sold to this very day are NOT IPV6 compatible and most likely aren't able to be upgraded. you are talking about tens of millions of dollars in hardware that is gonna be sent to the dump in huge amounts, hell I don't even think my cable modem which was handed me by my ISP is IPV6 capable, that's over 30,000 units just in my area that will have to go to the dump, while nobody I know has an IPV6 router as the only one I know of being sold retail is the Airport which is overpriced.

That would be fine, or even label say "Verson 2 testing" versus "version 2 stable" but you really do need to know this kind of information because otherwise tracking down where a problem may lie can be a royal PITA because you don't know if that release is a bug fix or a whole new rebuild with the problems that come with that.

How many Americans are gonna be needing or even wanting to hook up with some address in the middle of China or Africa? All the major websites have IPV4, all the ISPs here in the states have IPV4 and if they had any brains at all they got extra IPV4 addresses so they have room to grow, its just a non issue for the average American. Then there are the security issues, how many of the software firewalls and antivirus packages have been testing to work with IPV6? How well do they perform? i don't know, i can't find any data which means i doubt anybody is even really testing this stuff except for internally.
So while I agree that governments need this because its a global WWW for consumers i'd say its not only not really needed for the average American but until I see some hard numbers showing how the various security software packages work with it I'd be leery of deploying it to my customers, just not enough data.
Ya know many here say 'Old hairy he hates FOSS' but I actually thought version numbers were one of the things they just nailed. First number is the version, and the number after the dot would let you know if it was beta or stable, odd for beta or testing, even for stable. What could be simpler? its the same reason i love AMD GPUs now, as the numbers since they bought ATI now make sense and are easy to follow, first number is series, second number tells you whether its low, midrange, or high end, and the third number tell you where it fits into that segment, with 3 being low, 5 mid, 7 high, and 9 dual chip. Again what could be simpler?
Frankly I wish more software would follow these examples instead of the Chrome/Firefox version number pissing contests. You just don't get any real information from their numbers, you can't tell if its just a bug fix or a whole rebuild, the numbers just don't tell you shit. In the end this is a case of the users and testers speaking and being actively ignored by management that is pushing an agenda. i saw the same thing with the way they shoved Vista out the door, I slapped the previews on a half a dozen systems and reported many show stoppers that later became well known, such as "Vista thrashes hard drive" "Vista loses network shares" and "Vista slows network performance to a crawl if you play media and access the network" but again we were ignored because the management had an agenda, in the case of Vista it was hitting a release date and with metro its forcing WinPhone UI onto the public in the hopes they'll "Get used to it" and buy overpriced Wintabs with metro UI.
But we saw how well that worked with Vista and I predict that is exactly what we'll see with Win 8, you can't just ignore your customers and expect them to buy, especially when there is absolutely nothing they want to do that doesn't work just fine with your previous product that will be supported for years thanks to government and business contracts. Win 7 is the new XP, Win 8 the new Vista.
That was the same problem with Titan Quest and one of the first things the modders released was an "infitite stash box" where when the game wasn't running you could unload your stash to one of 20 stash boxes,so I have NO doubt the modders will do something similar. i hope they don't go overboard like the TQ guys did though, they made it so you could right click and instantly get a set or turn any partial runes into full runes, that was too much power.
Now that said I CAN see why they did it, in TL1 it was too easy to save up an assload of gems or go gem hunting and up-convert them until you had a "weapon of mass destruction" that would just let you slaughter everything with a single hit. The devs said they were trying to get people to actually use the cool stuff and not just hoard constantly so having a limited pack does help you to take a hard look and only keep the REALLY good stuff.
So now I ONLY keep sets that will kick ass on a certain character, gold sets preferably, and if it doesn't have sockets? chunk it. There are too many killer gems to mess with the unsocketed crap and low level loot is plentiful so only save the REALLY cool stuff. As you said if you have trouble deciding you can always make a "dump character' to load their box with junk, but I've found by actually spending a little time throwing out the trash i have nearly half my stashbox free.

Uhhh...because it is in Intel's and Nvidia's best interests to get the hardware out as soon as the drivers are functional at all and then they can fix bugs and boost performance with an update later?
Hell they all do it, look at how many driver complaints you see in the first 6 months after a new APU or GPU comes out from AMD. Its better for sales if they get the "new stuff!" out ASAP and just fix any problems once its out the door. This is why on my gaming PC I prefer to get my high end card closer to EOL than release date, like the HD4850 I've been using for nearly 2 years. Not only does this allow me to get the cards cheaper, so I can afford to keep both boys and myself equal graphics wise, more importantly by that time all the bugs have been fixed, they've squeezed all the performance they can out of the card software wise, so what you'll get is stable and well performing without the "gotchas" like you experienced.
Sorry I didn't notice that was your work laptop but I'd strongly advise you talk to the IT dept about upgrading the drivers as I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see you get 25% or more performance boost simply by upgrading the software. Yes the RTM drivers are THAT badly optimized for the hardware.

Funny as I'm sure this is one of those ePeen douchebags that thinks anything that isn't a 21 inch core i7 monster with a 2Gb Nvidia card should not be allowed to exist. Of course they have to walk around looking for plug ins constantly, whereas I can play a game like TLII for 3 hours or more no problem, i also don't roast my nuts from the insane heat and can actually sit in a seat without having this huge ass desktop with screen attached dragging me down.
For anyone who is NOT a douchebag I'd highly recommend the Asus EEE AMD netbooks, I can game for 3 hours, watch 720p videos for 5, surf for a little over 6, weighs only 2.5 pounds with a 6 cell and is small enough it never gets in the way and its 1366x768 screen is crisp and clear. the only thing I would suggest is if you get a unit with 1066 memory you swap it for some 1333 as the Radeon APU performance wise runs better with faster memory.
All in all I'm quite happy I sold my full size for a netbook,WiFi is everywhere here and 12 inches seems to be the perfect size for screen readability and clarity. and unlike the douchebag I won't have sterilized myself by having a gaming rig sitting on my nuts.
Put your pinky on the 1 key and your first finger on the 4 key, that gives you 4 hotkeys that can be anything you want. Remember this is a Diablo II style loot and bash, not MS Flight sim. Hell I found I rarely even use #4, I have health on 1, mana on 2, the restore potion on 3. That right there will take care of pretty much any battle you are in and if you need something funky like changing your pet into something else that can always wait until you have killed a little clearing so you can look down. I personally have the big fish i catch lined up in 5-9 which makes it easy to switch my doggie into something else if I need to, but I like having him be a spider as the web throws slow them little fast bastards down.
That said unlike D3 and a lot of other new games out there Relic has made TLII completely modder friendly so i have no doubt it won't be a week or two before some modder comes out with a nice little app that will let you set several keybindings and switch on the fly.
I just wanted those that hadn't played to game not to think that the keys were some frustrating mess, unlike other games I have played. With TLII a good 90% of the game can be played with just the mouse, its easy enough to see your item bar at the bottom and just "pop" whatever you want on the fly and right clicking on the spell bar brings up your spells which are easily told apart by the large colorful icons so no problem there.
Sorry about that buddy, just got off a Torchlight 2 marathon with my youngest when i popped on and wrote that. he's rocking an Embermage with fire spells that are like nukes from God while I've got an engineer with a Poleaxe of ultimate slice your ass. I managed to score a shitload of magic find buffs and between him and me we've been hunting for killer armor sets, him going ga ga trying to find the pieces of this killer focus boosting set while I'm trying to find this set that will boost my magic finding and melee right off the charts!
The battles, OMFG what battles, we dive into these huge mobs with fire and lightning and spells and minions flying everywhere, It gets to the point if he's gonna let loose the nuke I just step out of the way and pick off the straggles because the huge lightshow in the middle of the mob is just too crazy to battle through, the amount of secrets and hidden rooms and goodies we are finding make it worth exploring every little area and we've already decided to go back next round and revisit some places we already hit just to loot and level up.
This may sound like hyperbole but its 100% true, I've got something like 5 new games sitting in Steam from the sales, including Deus Ex HR and the Crysis series which I haven't even fired up yet, i'm having too much fun playing Torchlight 2 to care ATM. Between the skills, the weapons and armor sets, the hidden secrets and easter eggs, the huge battles and tough bad guys I'm just having too damned much fun to care about playing anything else ATM and the fact my two soon to be no longer teenage boys can just jump in on my private game and the bad guys automatically ramp up just is the icing on the delicious cake.
I mean all this gaming fun and its just $20? Its a no brainer, everybody that likes gaming and diablo style loot and battle games needs to buy this yesterday!

I've watched friends with 20MBit cable connections play and they would still get spots where it was obviously jerking and it wasn't their systems, its the thousands of miles between them and Blizzard's servers. Jim Sterling at The Escapist made a nice rant about how we should ALL be pissed at them for the DRM, and a big part was the jerking laggy mess he'd find or not being able to get on after buying on release day.
Compare this to Torchlight 2. it took me and my boys less than 5 minutes to tie our Steam to Torchlight IIs matchmaking service (which is required because they also sell standalone Windows and soon Linux copies as they do TL I) and 3 minutes after that I was hosting a private server on my own system and the boys were in game and joining me in the fun. ZERO lag,no matter how many "super fireballs" the youngest liked to throw or insane supermoves the oldest pulled off, instant trading between us, it all "just worked" and when I had to sit in the doctor's office to get me some antibiotics for my bi-annual sinus infection i was playing my SP character (we agreed to save separate characters for MP and SP so that we'd be on the same level) on my little E350 netbook with no online and just having a ball.

Sigh, do I REALLY need to spell this out? Taking those addresses back would buy us time and thanks to VMs and virtual servers one address can be the home for MANY web pages. And again BC as I was talking about was for the purposes of WEBSITES, there is nothing anybody can do about the hardware problem but replace it. On the website side it was WAY STUPID not to make it BC so that a website could use a single IPV6 address and have it cover both, or have a user with an IPV6 address easily and seamlessly get to ANY website without hassles and connection issues. Again this is software not hardware so it shouldn't have been difficult.
Mark my words and mark them well, when they do flip the switch? its gonna be a giant clusterfuck, with serious issues for months, possibly years. Finally nobody is talking about the environmental costs which are gonna be staggering. look at newegg and Tiger and you'll see the majority of the routers sold to this very day are NOT IPV6 compatible and most likely aren't able to be upgraded. you are talking about tens of millions of dollars in hardware that is gonna be sent to the dump in huge amounts, hell I don't even think my cable modem which was handed me by my ISP is IPV6 capable, that's over 30,000 units just in my area that will have to go to the dump, while nobody I know has an IPV6 router as the only one I know of being sold retail is the Airport which is overpriced.
like it or not we just aren't ready and its gonna be a clusterfuck for years to come, we are gonna have a shortage of people who can fix problems, shortage of affordable hardware that can use it, and while Linux may support it that only helps 2% of the consumer population at best and the rest are using software that we frankly don't know if it has holes you can drive a truck through when it comes to IPV6. I know there are articles showing malware already using this weakness to get past security to infect systems.
That would be fine, or even label say "Verson 2 testing" versus "version 2 stable" but you really do need to know this kind of information because otherwise tracking down where a problem may lie can be a royal PITA because you don't know if that release is a bug fix or a whole new rebuild with the problems that come with that.

How many Americans are gonna be needing or even wanting to hook up with some address in the middle of China or Africa? All the major websites have IPV4, all the ISPs here in the states have IPV4 and if they had any brains at all they got extra IPV4 addresses so they have room to grow, its just a non issue for the average American. Then there are the security issues, how many of the software firewalls and antivirus packages have been testing to work with IPV6? How well do they perform? i don't know, i can't find any data which means i doubt anybody is even really testing this stuff except for internally.
So while I agree that governments need this because its a global WWW for consumers i'd say its not only not really needed for the average American but until I see some hard numbers showing how the various security software packages work with it I'd be leery of deploying it to my customers, just not enough data.
Ya know many here say 'Old hairy he hates FOSS' but I actually thought version numbers were one of the things they just nailed. First number is the version, and the number after the dot would let you know if it was beta or stable, odd for beta or testing, even for stable. What could be simpler? its the same reason i love AMD GPUs now, as the numbers since they bought ATI now make sense and are easy to follow, first number is series, second number tells you whether its low, midrange, or high end, and the third number tell you where it fits into that segment, with 3 being low, 5 mid, 7 high, and 9 dual chip. Again what could be simpler?
Frankly I wish more software would follow these examples instead of the Chrome/Firefox version number pissing contests. You just don't get any real information from their numbers, you can't tell if its just a bug fix or a whole rebuild, the numbers just don't tell you shit. So kudos to the FFmpeg guys for having sane version numbers, nice to see in this day and age of version number spinning.
Uhhh..that would be guys like me that tested and reported on metro during the dev preview...hi! Please don't blame me and my fellow testers, you'd see the #1 by a long shot suggestion on EVERY preview was 'make metro optional for non touch devices" and we were repeatedly IGNORED.
In the end this is a case of the users and testers speaking and being actively ignored by management that is pushing an agenda. i saw the same thing with the way they shoved Vista out the door, I slapped the previews on a half a dozen systems and reported many show stoppers that later became well known, such as "Vista thrashes hard drive" "Vista loses network shares" and "Vista slows network performance to a crawl if you play media and access the network" but again we were ignored because the management had an agenda, in the case of Vista it was hitting a release date and with metro its forcing WinPhone UI onto the public in the hopes they'll "Get used to it" and buy overpriced Wintabs with metro UI.
But we saw how well that worked with Vista and I predict that is exactly what we'll see with Win 8, you can't just ignore your customers and expect them to buy, especially when there is absolutely nothing they want to do that doesn't work just fine with your previous product that will be supported for years thanks to government and business contracts. Win 7 is the new XP, Win 8 the new Vista.
That was the same problem with Titan Quest and one of the first things the modders released was an "infitite stash box" where when the game wasn't running you could unload your stash to one of 20 stash boxes,so I have NO doubt the modders will do something similar. i hope they don't go overboard like the TQ guys did though, they made it so you could right click and instantly get a set or turn any partial runes into full runes, that was too much power.
Now that said I CAN see why they did it, in TL1 it was too easy to save up an assload of gems or go gem hunting and up-convert them until you had a "weapon of mass destruction" that would just let you slaughter everything with a single hit. The devs said they were trying to get people to actually use the cool stuff and not just hoard constantly so having a limited pack does help you to take a hard look and only keep the REALLY good stuff.
So now I ONLY keep sets that will kick ass on a certain character, gold sets preferably, and if it doesn't have sockets? chunk it. There are too many killer gems to mess with the unsocketed crap and low level loot is plentiful so only save the REALLY cool stuff. As you said if you have trouble deciding you can always make a "dump character' to load their box with junk, but I've found by actually spending a little time throwing out the trash i have nearly half my stashbox free.

Uhhh...because it is in Intel's and Nvidia's best interests to get the hardware out as soon as the drivers are functional at all and then they can fix bugs and boost performance with an update later?
Hell they all do it, look at how many driver complaints you see in the first 6 months after a new APU or GPU comes out from AMD. Its better for sales if they get the "new stuff!" out ASAP and just fix any problems once its out the door. This is why on my gaming PC I prefer to get my high end card closer to EOL than release date, like the HD4850 I've been using for nearly 2 years. Not only does this allow me to get the cards cheaper, so I can afford to keep both boys and myself equal graphics wise, more importantly by that time all the bugs have been fixed, they've squeezed all the performance they can out of the card software wise, so what you'll get is stable and well performing without the "gotchas" like you experienced.
Sorry I didn't notice that was your work laptop but I'd strongly advise you talk to the IT dept about upgrading the drivers as I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see you get 25% or more performance boost simply by upgrading the software. Yes the RTM drivers are THAT badly optimized for the hardware.

Funny as I'm sure this is one of those ePeen douchebags that thinks anything that isn't a 21 inch core i7 monster with a 2Gb Nvidia card should not be allowed to exist. Of course they have to walk around looking for plug ins constantly, whereas I can play a game like TLII for 3 hours or more no problem, i also don't roast my nuts from the insane heat and can actually sit in a seat without having this huge ass desktop with screen attached dragging me down.
For anyone who is NOT a douchebag I'd highly recommend the Asus EEE AMD netbooks, I can game for 3 hours, watch 720p videos for 5, surf for a little over 6, weighs only 2.5 pounds with a 6 cell and is small enough it never gets in the way and its 1366x768 screen is crisp and clear. the only thing I would suggest is if you get a unit with 1066 memory you swap it for some 1333 as the Radeon APU performance wise runs better with faster memory.
All in all I'm quite happy I sold my full size for a netbook,WiFi is everywhere here and 12 inches seems to be the perfect size for screen readability and clarity. and unlike the douchebag I won't have sterilized myself by having a gaming rig sitting on my nuts.
Put your pinky on the 1 key and your first finger on the 4 key, that gives you 4 hotkeys that can be anything you want. Remember this is a Diablo II style loot and bash, not MS Flight sim. Hell I found I rarely even use #4, I have health on 1, mana on 2, the restore potion on 3. That right there will take care of pretty much any battle you are in and if you need something funky like changing your pet into something else that can always wait until you have killed a little clearing so you can look down. I personally have the big fish i catch lined up in 5-9 which makes it easy to switch my doggie into something else if I need to, but I like having him be a spider as the web throws slow them little fast bastards down.
That said unlike D3 and a lot of other new games out there Relic has made TLII completely modder friendly so i have no doubt it won't be a week or two before some modder comes out with a nice little app that will let you set several keybindings and switch on the fly.
I just wanted those that hadn't played to game not to think that the keys were some frustrating mess, unlike other games I have played. With TLII a good 90% of the game can be played with just the mouse, its easy enough to see your item bar at the bottom and just "pop" whatever you want on the fly and right clicking on the spell bar brings up your spells which are easily told apart by the large colorful icons so no problem there.
Sorry about that buddy, just got off a Torchlight 2 marathon with my youngest when i popped on and wrote that. he's rocking an Embermage with fire spells that are like nukes from God while I've got an engineer with a Poleaxe of ultimate slice your ass. I managed to score a shitload of magic find buffs and between him and me we've been hunting for killer armor sets, him going ga ga trying to find the pieces of this killer focus boosting set while I'm trying to find this set that will boost my magic finding and melee right off the charts!
The battles, OMFG what battles, we dive into these huge mobs with fire and lightning and spells and minions flying everywhere, It gets to the point if he's gonna let loose the nuke I just step out of the way and pick off the straggles because the huge lightshow in the middle of the mob is just too crazy to battle through, the amount of secrets and hidden rooms and goodies we are finding make it worth exploring every little area and we've already decided to go back next round and revisit some places we already hit just to loot and level up.
This may sound like hyperbole but its 100% true, I've got something like 5 new games sitting in Steam from the sales, including Deus Ex HR and the Crysis series which I haven't even fired up yet, i'm having too much fun playing Torchlight 2 to care ATM. Between the skills, the weapons and armor sets, the hidden secrets and easter eggs, the huge battles and tough bad guys I'm just having too damned much fun to care about playing anything else ATM and the fact my two soon to be no longer teenage boys can just jump in on my private game and the bad guys automatically ramp up just is the icing on the delicious cake.
I mean all this gaming fun and its just $20? Its a no brainer, everybody that likes gaming and diablo style loot and battle games needs to buy this yesterday!

It shows that. Hell even my little old lady customers come in and I find Firefox or Chrome on their desktops every. single. time, even the old folks don't use IE anymore.
Now what is the "horrible crime" that MSFT did? they forgot to add the updated browser choice screen when they rolled out SP1...Oh wow, somebody forgot to add something to a build, its a conspiracy! Did the EU bother to ASK them about this? Did they bother to even give them a CHANCE to fix it? Nope its "Give us teh monies! Nom nom nom!".
I'm sorry but bullshit is bullshit, and I don't give a fuck if it was Apple, Google, or MSFT, hitting someone with some insane fine for having a fuckup without even bothering to contact them and give them a chance to fix said fuckup is just wrong and makes this seem like what it is...a cash grab. Hell even the FSF will tell someone they have fucked up and give them a chance to be in compliance before they start suing, but the commission can't even pick up a phone and say 'Hey did you forget something?". What bullshit.
I refuse to buy Diablo 3 because of the elephant in the room that nobody seems to mention, being constantly connected to their servers for SP means you are gonna deal with la-la-la-lag. I've watched friends with 20MBit cable connections play and they would still get spots where it was obviously jerking and it wasn't their systems, its the thousands of miles between them and Blizzard's servers. Jim Sterling at The Escapist made a nice rant about how we should ALL be pissed at them for the DRM, and a big part was the jerking laggy mess he'd find or not being able to get on after buying on release day.
Compare this to Torchlight 2. it took me and my boys less than 5 minutes to tie our Steam to Torchlight IIs matchmaking service (which is required because they also sell standalone Windows and soon Linux copies as they do TL I) and 3 minutes after that I was hosting a private server on my own system and the boys were in game and joining me in the fun. ZERO lag,no matter how many "super fireballs" the youngest liked to throw or insane supermoves the oldest pulled off, instant trading between us, it all "just worked" and when I had to sit in the doctor's office to get me some antibiotics for my bi-annual sinus infection i was playing my SP character (we agreed to save separate characters for MP and SP so that we'd be on the same level) on my little E350 netbook with no online and just having a ball.
