Why do I drive a japanese car? My honda CRX lasted 300 k miles and is still running strong. A Shadow I drove with similar zeal broke down completely (chasis first, part by part) at 170 k.
The problem is not whether we buy american products or foreign. The problem is, why are many american products poorer in quality? Look deeper: many products we use in daily life need specially trained workers to build. We need good engineers to build good cars, good engineers to build good computers, and good engineers for software. American education is reputed as among the best in the world, yet where are all these highly educated graduates? To study engineering in a school like Columbia or MIT, a middle class student has to be prepared for a loan of over 100k. Does he now want to spend the rest of his life designing really good products for GM or Ford with a starting salary of 60k? No, he follows the money, goes into medical and starts sucking blood out of his fellow americans as 150k per year. The society does not treat students well in this country, and when they graduate, they don't feel like paying back.
In India, education in even the best schools is very affordable by even lower class families. These students pursue what they want, and perform well as workers. Its a completely different culture out there and before you make claims that buying american products will improve the economy you have to look at other factors that have contributed to our downfall (one of them was the 'selection' of W by our SC...)
Two reasons I think these new domains won't make a huge impact.
First because people can spell whitehouse.com better than whitehouse.xxx, due to the O;)
Second,.COM is largely seen as the sole TLD around which the web is based.
When.mail,.asia and.xxx etc become available, people with.com domains would be seen as old timers in the field. I remember icann also approved of.pro. How many people do you know who actually use.pro? These extra TLD's are just another way of generating revenue for registrars. People who couldn't get sex.com and gave up on other names will want to grab sex.xxx in the future. Thats when google will be come a heavyweight in domain registration....
IP is a western invention. Information should be free, and India China have their own ways of practicing this philosophy (shown in their "poor IP records").
Its also very interesting how many of these big companies make news not by innovation or development, but by how far they go in attacking linux, GPL, and what not.
"Maybe if you got an after-school job at McDonalds, you could save up for a new Dell."
here you invoke two obnoxious brand names, McDonalds and Dell (a man is known by the company he keeps). Obviously you are a "supersize me" windows guy, so why don't you chill out in the M$ area?
"Also, try asking your mom to increase you allowance."
What works for you will not work for others. Come back in a couple of years when you can share some new experiences.
I've been using FreeBSD and NetBSD for over one year now for two good reasons:
1) They both run faster that any linux distro on my 150 Mhz 32 MB ram machines. Even slackware and gentoo fail me here, regardless of how much optimizations I include in the 2.6.* kernel
2) The security is outstanding compared to linux distros. My two machines serve as routers and firewall plus I needed something light and fast. I also use these systems to play around with socket programming, and they are great.
With both NetBSD and FreeBSD, you get a core system, and then you can use ports to install whatever it is that you need. Its more clean and organized compared to all Linux distros out there. You will be surprised how much junk mainstream linux'es install on your system.
Someone will ask, "what do you mean by faster?". Try compiling a small c++ program, for example. I say people should use Linux as a bootcamp, sort of a training field, so you are better prepared to handle classic unix OSes like BSD.
IMHO I don't think GNU GPL is applicable to every open source project. Sometimes it may do more harm than good. I think it should only be used for new projects which are destined to become large and self-contained. OpenSolaris has made a good choice anyway.
I work in a major mobile-computing company, and from what I know redhat is a popular embedded linux OEM. They make RedBoot -- an equivalent of lilo for embedded devices, and customized kernels for your devices.

I think you need to compare the percentage of effort put into Linux by the two companies. Also comparing the total contribution of Linux based products to the companies' revenue will be useful in determining if IBM is a linux company or not.
IBM, in my opinion is the biggest carnivorous animal out there. They've sold everything from vaccum cleaners to PCs, to services, and now they're selling their linux philosophy. Calling IBM a Linux company will be a misnomer. They just want to change the market in a profitable way...and when they run of out ideas of making money out of one industry they turn to another...hence surviving.

Unless your sole purpose in life to destroy everything else, you will find more time to devote to things that you always wanted to do. This will lead to a burst of creativity and development, and since all the wisdom you accumulated in 70 years isn't lost, you still have time to develop, implement, and share everything you know.
I think a thousand year life will allow some of us to visit mars and remote areas of our solar system in person, and do other things -- like devote 100 years to art, another 100 to mathematics, another 100 to biology, and a big chunk to sex! SS isn't flawed, because while the first batch of pensioners and workers may face some hardships, it will all be over in their lifetime!!!
I have a SL-5500, and I'm tired of the bundled linux port that it came with. Is there a way of installing *BSD on this device? I know there is a depenguinator that does this for PCs....anyone tried it on a Zaurus?
LOL, mod parent up!!!!! This is hilarious.

Is something wrong with the moderator?
Ok, what is faster? NetBSD 2.0 or Linux 2.6.* ? I want to install something other than OpenZaurus on my SL-5500.
hope this fixes Post-9.0 Mandrake issues
don't transgaming have an axtivex mod for mozilla?
