Why hasn't the team come forth with a fix for this exploit? They have more knowlege on the subject then I do.

The key speaker mentioned that ECC ram scrubs all bits right after startup so its one possible defence (though not very effective still because reports are not throughly tested). Another would be to setup a timer that scrubs the memory if the machine has been idle for a given amount of time....one fancy version was to have your machine trigger the scrubber once your cellphone (running a tracker) had been away for a certain duration. The decay time (IIRC) was an average of 25 seconds.... BTW while you're at it, look up VileFault ;)

I did not say Gmail was OSS. I said "Two years of beta in the OSS community isn't unheard of." I'd edit to change the wording, but I can't.

I think you're right, sometime in the future GMail may end up open-source like all major google products such as search and AdSense. If not in the future then maybe in an alternate universe, where evil doesn't exist.

The M.O. he demonstrated in the crime indicates the disorganized type.

You want to delve into psychopath vs. sociopath types here. Psychopaths are the calculating, detail oriented types (who usually get away with crimes), and their goal is to end up in a position of authority (aim to become Judges/Surgeons or Militarymen etc. where they can decide fate of others). Sociopaths on the other hand plan less meticulously, more prone to jumping from one crime to another, like say a psychopath with ADD.
