I am pretty sure that this is not new. Even the ancient greeks, who thought it honorable to be involved in politics, eventually became apathetic. Not everyone here in the British-owned colonies was for the American Revolution. Some were for, some were against, and some didn't care. Some were against because they were loyal to Britain, others were against simply to maintain the status quo. And even after the Brits left America alone it still took many years for only a few people to agree on a constitution. Something must have turned out right during that (USA is one of the youngest countries, but I believe the oldest government) but the same will eventually be true. America will someday go the way of Rome and Greece and any other nation. This happens and we should try to keep it from happening, but it's not new.

Yes there is a new compression technology, but it would have to be able to just about halve the current compression in order to fit it on either disc you mentioned.

Except that DTV and HDTV are the same size in terms of radio spectrum. HDTV = High Definition Television, which is done digitally. DTV = Digital Television. So HDTV is a subset of DTV. No one is ever going to be forced to broadcast HDTV. They are being told by the FCC to go digital. That is all. There is no cutoff to switch to HDTV. Some stations are even planning on still broadcasting at low resolutions and thus be able to fit in the same spectrum different shows (it's called multi-casting http://www.pbs.org/opb/crashcourse/digital_v_analo g/multicast.html). What resolution a broadcaster decides to send their signals in is their choice, but they must do it in digital.

But sometimes being left wanting more is good. For example, TV always goes to commercial when it is exciting so that you are left wanting more, and thus you wait, but that's an obvious one. While I loved the Star Wars prequels, there was always something about Star Wars before them, when you had to say, "How did Anakin become Darth Vader?" and all you got was little snippets from the OT and some stuff in books. Wanting more is good. If you always get everything, suddenly everything becomes mundane. But if you are always stopped just short of that, and left wanting more, then you begin to crave that. That is why people make sequels, and it is also why sequels typically don't do as well. People want more, so more is made. But then when people get more, they realize it wasn't all it was cracked up to be, or that they had imagined it. Imagination is and always will be a big part of us.

While the switch to digital is mandatory, many people are missing what is going to happen to all that freed up spectrum. It will be available for anyone to purchase from the FCC. If someone decides that 12% of the population is something they don't want to lose, they can (amazingly enough) decide to purchase spectrum for the use of analog broadcasting. Seriously, no one is stopping them. They must broadcast in digital this is true. They also will have to relinquish the subsidies from the gov't for the analog spectrum they are using. But if they desire to pay full market price for their current spectrum, they are more than welcome to do so. There is nothing mandating that broadcasters get rid of their analog signals.

So let's review. 1) All broadcasters must broadcast in digital. 2) All current analog broadcasting spectrum be sold off to those who are willing to pay the fair market value. 3) Nothing says that the purchased spectrum from the freed up spectrum cannot be used for analog television broadcasts. If you would like, then go for that 12%.

As a note, I do not have an HDTV and don't see myself getting one soon. The price must come down significantly for me to consider it worth more than just doing everything on my computer.

Standard Resolution right now is 640x480. That comes out to 307,200 pixels. True High definition is 1920x1080 which is 2,073,600 pixels. That's 6.75 times more pixels. Thus if you use the same compression methods it's not far-fetched to assume that the compressed size is also 6.75 times the size of standard res compressed. A DVD holds at max a little over 9 GB. If you use it all (and it's safe to say that many now do) then to go to true High Definition you need over 60 GB of storage, more than twice what HD-DVD can hold. You might point out that blu-ray can't even hold that much. Yes it can. TDK has developed a 100 GB version (http://www.blu-ray.com/) and I've heard a 200 GB version is in the works (http://addict3d.org/index.php?page=viewarticle&ty pe=news&ID=3062). HD-DVD should die. It's a lame excuse for an upgrade.

    Then do this:

You go to vote in the little machine and it can quickly tally your vote such that everyone has a good idea who won before they go to bed. But it also prints out two versions of your vote. One for you to keep and one for you to hand to the people manning the booths. When it prints it out you can be sure that it voted the correct way on both sheets and then hand it out. The machine keeps no records at all.

Then in the case that a recount is demanded they have the paper to do so with. This way the machine is now being tested as to its accuracy. If any flaw is found a good explanation had better be forthcoming.

This solves the paper trail problem, the "who's winning, I need to go to sleep" problem, and the machine keeping reverse-engineerable records problem. Any body see anything wrong with this?
