  1. Re: It was harmful... on Recordings of the Sounds Heard In the Cuban US Embassy Attacks Released (apnews.com) · · Score: 1

In case of Sonic Attack on your district,
    follow these rules...
If you are making love, it is imperative to bring all bodies to orgasm simultaneously
Do not waste time blocking your ears
Do not waste time seeking a soundproof shelter
Try to get as far away from the sonic source as possible, but do not panic...
Use your wheels, it is what they are for
Small babies may be placed inside the special cocoons, which should be left if possible, in a shelter
Do not attempt to use your own limbs
If no wheels are available, metal, not organic, limbs should be employed whenever practical...
Remember, in the case of Sonic Attack,
Survival does mean every man for himself
    Statistically more people survive
if they think only of themselvesDo not attempt to rescue friends,
    relatives, or loved ones.
You have only a few seconds to escape
Use those seconds sensibly or you will inevitably die
    Do not panic
    Think only of yourselves...

These are the first signs of Sonic Attack:
You will notice small objects, such as ornaments, oscillating.
You will notice a vibration in your diaphragm
You will hear a distant hissing in your ears
    You will feel dizzy
You will feel the need to vomit
There will be bleeding from orifices
There will be an ache in the pelvic region
You may be subject to fits of hysterical shouting,
    or even laughter
These are all sign of imminent Sonic destruction
Your only real protection is flight
If you are less than ten years old,
then remain in your shelter and use your cocoon
But remember: You can help no-one else,
    No-one else,
    No-one else...

What blows me away about the article is the idea that Sunnyvale has been affordable in the past, and that Santa Clara is only starting to climb. There's an implicit assumption that "tech" is centered in Menlo Park or something and that it's only now pushing people to the southeast. I've been going down to the silly valley for work for years and have never perceived such a thing. Lots of tech companies have been in San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale for years. And Cupertino is right there. It's always been my perception that the entire region has been inflated for a couple of decades. All I can surmise is that the baseline for the entire region is so whack that the agent in the article has a skewed perspective on what "normal" and "middle class" mean.

You sound more financially set than I do, but I had a bit of a similar experience.

o Internal recruiter from $wellknowncompanyhighonlistsofgoodworkplaces contacted me on LinkedIn, hot for me. Wanted me to relocate. Which I can't do.
o Couple months later he contacts me again, says the group working with the tech I currently work with is 'struggling' and they're all hot for me.
o Wants me to move to one of two cities. The first is the one I'd moved away from a couple of years ago for family reasons, and where I could no longer afford to live. The second is one where nobody can afford to live. Mind you, they also have a smaller office 45 min from where I live (modulo traffic)
o Repeat that I can't move. Says he'll talk to the hiring manager.
o Says since I'm senior etc. it'd be okay if I just went into the local office once a week or so. Where none of the team sites, but just because. Fine. Maybe their insurance would be better than what I have at least, they use a company I had previously wrangled into covering certain things.
o Bizarrely, company policy is that everything gets deployed in a container, whether it's suited or not.
o Hours of phone screens go well, they're all hot for me, want me to go to city #2 to interview on-site. I give them days that do/don't work, they say they'll get back to me.
    o Nothing
o Ten days later I ping the recruiter, and they don't want to proceed because I'm not in city #1 or city #2.

This is a company high on the lists of best places to work, they wasted hours of my time, then turn me away because of family disability. @!#$@#$@.

So yeah that's why you can't fill your position.

They wanted me to fight traffic twice a day and sit at a desk literally feet inside the main suite door. For less than I was already making, going up to parity in 6 months. Their field was some sort of social media targeted advertising, and they were entrenched with CentOS 5. Found this through a recruiter who contacted me. The third-party recruiter kept calling me to pressure even after I told him no, and to stop calling me.
