    The GP did not make a value judgement nor did he/she say anything negative about having kids. Having a kid is indeed a choice, and those of us who can't afford to have someone else raise them trade off all manner of things for potentially the rest of our lives when we make the decision. In my case I lost the genetic lottery and will have to work for the rest of my life to financially care for my son. But I knew up front what I was getting into, and that every conception is a roll of the dice.

    Mind you one does encounter "child free movement" people who are jerks about it, but the GP here wasn't expressing that. Suggest you cut the GP some slack.

    Is "slum" a historical look?

    SF is square mile after square mile of bog standard annular crumbling 2BR ZLL townhouses. Nothing would be lost by razing large swaths of them.

    Living in a shitty apartment would be only marginally worse than living in one of those. You already have no auditory privacy or space.

    A corollary to not centralizing is to stop requiring employees to all go to the same building, at the same time, every day.

    I know that. I was talking about places that pressure hourly employees to work without pay, which is disjoint from travel.
    I didn't say unreimbursed travel expenses are legal theft; they're ethical theft.

    Why would it be? Same reasons as unpaid overtime, it's basically theft from the employee.

    Why would anyone work for such a company? Lack of better choices perhaps, and cultural familiarity with hierarchy. This company wasn't paying my associate particularly well, and he differed ethnically from them.

    So much for Salesforce Ohana.

    Earlier this year they contact me and were real hot to bring me on board. Said they could get over their initial demand for me to relocate, did multiple web interviews, said they wanted me to go to SF to interview in person. Then they didn't schedule that, and eventually came back saying relocation was required. Even though there was a local-ish office I could have made it to at least once a week.

    Rep for an awesome place to work. Wonder if that's progressively becoming a thing of the past.

    Most of my employers have rubber-stamped most travel expenses -- $50 steaks, ample booze. Managers renting SUV's. I routinely average half what co-workers expense.

    A former co-woker told me of his time working for a Taiwan-based tech company. They were expected to pay *all* of their own travel expenses. I would have thought that illegal in the US, but when I looked it up it doesn't seem like it is. Most companies do pay, but it stunned me that it isn't apparently required by law.

    In 1992 a guy who had worked in Frito-Lay HR in TX told me of a manager interview candidate who submitted $600 in "limo rides". His response had been "Ah yeah no, I know what that is and we're not paying for it".

    My first thought is that when they subsequently log in to capture rides, doesn't the surge abate? Or do they ride the latency? Would be interesting to know how responsive the surge pricing is -- I suspect not very.

  17. My first thought was just how impractical maintaining something like that across distance will be. When someone runs a truck into a pier and shifts that tube a few inches, when a small quake shifts two tubes by a few inches ... I sure as hell don't want to be barreling toward the inflection point at that speed.

    Control menus could speak through the audio system, assuming the car has one.

    Everything being electronic does make me uneasy re what happens when the puter shits itself -- safety and ability to drive. Conventional cars are already ludicrously expensive to fix when electronics go bad. Hell, I had to spend $600 having the "motherboard" in a fridge replaced.

  21. A fundamental part of the problem is Fuckerberg insisting that his employees live and work in the silly valley, which is a vicious circle. He's still rich no matter the cost of living. Everyone else, not so much.

  22. Do you have any idea what college costs these days? Tuition has massively outpaced inflation and salaries.

    Or childcare if you can find it? $2000/month and up.

    Or a school that doesn't park your kid alone in a room with a tub of water all afternoon? $2200/mo+

    Or have you ever heard of "community property"? That's where your ex gets half of everything that's left and you have to leverage your ass to buy a home as real estate prices escalate?

    A while back I read a claim that 66% of those who take a last-second retention incentive end up leaving the company within six months, the idea being that the reasons that prompted a departure generally aren't glossed over by a one-time bump.

    In the last ten years at least, NOT job hopping has become a liability, at least in tech on the west coast. The first thing a recruiter or hiring manager asks is why you want to leave if you've been with your current company X years, and they're prone to turning you away as "unable to adapt".

    One cannot underestimate the value of a job that will exist next year or five years from now. One also loses thousands with each job transition when the medical deductible gets reset mid-year.
