Uber/Lyft are a tiny fraction of the vehicles on the pavement in NYC. Unlike traditional taxis, however, you can get one to stop for you without having to jump in front of it on the street, the driver doesn't pretend he doesn't know how to get where you need to go, the seats aren't sticky, and the car doesn't smell like vomit.

This is protectionism for the antiquated taxi industry, nothing more nothing less.

  5. FWIW, part of the suicide difference is that women are less likely than men to use *lethal* methods. The ratio of *attempts* is I think much different than that of deaths.

Not necessarily true. Don't discount those of us who benefit from integration with family computers, phones, and other devices without devoting hours and hours to dicking around with whatever Android fork a given cheap / frangible phone happens to come with.

  12. ^federal^state

    Problems with this include:

o Any subsidies -- which vary from zero to inadequate -- often aren't enough to cover the delta for real SpEd
o There is often nothing that forces the school to use that money for SpEd. It is not uncommon for it to go elsewhere, say to subsidize football or inflated admin salaries.

One thing I've occasionally seen in the past is that sometimes an item will be highly priced because it is out of print, or had had an updated release. Eg. I sold my LD of Silent Running for a healthy profit just after the movie was released on DVD; the market yet not yet caught up with the new release.
