When I was in high school, we had a power-tripping principle/vice-principle duo that no student liked. They went about treating students as if they were bound to be in class at all times, and at no time act out of the ordinary. Frequently their bounds of control reached beyond the simple school setting. I started a petition online that accused them to something of this effect (simply nothing against the law or accusing them of any crime - simply dislike for them) asking for them to be removed from their positions.
Low and behold, they found out about the petition and pulled me out of class during an *exam*. They basically told me that it was libel and that they could sue me for it. Absolutely ridiculous power tripping coercive bastards. If I knew then what I know now (5 years later) about the law, I would have taken them as far as they wanted to go!
Get off your ass and go ask them. Do a survey. Why are you posting on Slashdot where possibly 5-10 people from Carleton will see this story? All of the responses you are getting here are ideas, but not the needs of the students.
Annnnnd here's a reference for you:

Says 380kWh per day during winter at minimum.
Just curious: Where did you get your energy consumption stats from? Do these include energy consumed to power a vehicle?
Simple, make it relevant. Find out where the software is failing or has failed, and translate that into dollar terms. If your company lost out on the opportunity for a discovery that they could license for $400,000 - make it known!
Simple, we don't have just three needs as many like to think (eat, sleep, drink). There is a ton of research on motivation. Look up Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, for example. You'd be surprised.
Needs versus wants 101. Needs are inherent. They are physical, psychological, what have you. These exist whether or not anybody is selling anything at all. Marketers create wants - ways to satisfy these needs. If you are thirsty, you don't need a Pepsi, you need water. You WANT a Pepsi.
If you are not a savvy consumer, yes you will walk past the other products. If you can't decide whether or not you want a snack that is sweet or salty, is that the fault of marketers? You have free will and are not being forced to buy anything. If marketing did not exist, you would walk into a store and purchase a random item off of the shelf (remember, no brand names, no fancy packaging!). In which case do you think you would find the better product? That where they are indistinguishable and you select at random, or that which you are provided with information to make a better decision?
Annnnnd thank you for taking what I said out of context. Very mature.
Thank you for your insight. I got modded down -1, troll for my comment from a marketing perspective. Enjoy what's coming for you next.
I would argue that there are ethics, but there is a difference in what we feel is ethical relative to the general public.
LOL at -1 troll. Sorry for contributing academic insight into this topic.
1)I'm a marketer by trade. I feel that its my duty to explain this to the general public.
2)The "Are you one of those people who thinks marketers are evil and make you buy things you don't want?" question was legitimate. It seems like everybody thinks this, and it is silly.
Gotta love Slashdot's arrogant programmer/developer slant!
Are you one of those people who thinks marketers are evil and make you buy things you don't want? Their objective is to provide you with information that makes you want their product - a need already exists ("I need social acceptance" - or something along those lines). With this research, the marketers are merely helping you fulfill this need by pushing past other products' attempts to get you to purchase them. I see nothing remotely illegal or unethical about this. If the subjects are doing this on their own free will, so let them.
Yep yep, double standard. I don't even see it as a new OS either, it is merely a (omfg) "service pack" with new features, much as Fiji will be. After all, it is still OSX. So who took longer to make a new OS? Microsoft at five years (xp released oct 01) or Apple at seven years (and counting- osx released 2000)?
blackboard, and its old counterpart webct are absolute shit. takes forever to load, crashes firefox (and sometimes IE7) like nobody's business. uses java like its the next coming of jesus. stupid popup to check your browser. absolute garbage.
The problem appears to be related to Range telemetry. The team needs another 10 minutes to examine the situation.

Engineers are working on the problem that stopped the countdown. SpaceX has time available to troubleshoot the issue and try the launch again -- so the flight has not been scrubbed for today.

Uhhh. Excuse me. Smart growth agenda? What the hell? Is it not logical for the well-being of the earth (and now- surprise- our health) to live in higher density urban centres, thus expending less energy to travel?

I suppose that it is the same as being a doctor then, eh? Pure fortune telling. "Oh, this guy is obviously crazy. Let's drill a hole in his head!"
They should change Sudan's TLD to .su... or give them another one.

And that's also why subliminal messaging has never been proven to work. Studies point both ways!

I'm talking about electronica DJs. Many still use vinyl, but are moving to CD's (CDJ Equipment) and some laptops (eugh).
Or... let me think... DJ's with thousands of albums that they want to convert to CD or MP3 for DJing instead?
