  2. Not the best way to get the buyers on your side... on Industry Asks Gamers To Pay More · · Score: 4, Insightful

It takes me back the the early 1990s when used music CDs were a controversy, with Garth Brooks giving interviews on how it was killing his industry. A local indy music shop began using that to market its used CD section.. "Come on down and piss off Garth Brooks!" It was a smashing success, and I think they may still have the sign up somewhere.

  8. The choice of book makes sense.. on Rumors of Pratchett Film · · Score: 3, Interesting

"Wee Free Men" is one of his so-called childrens' books. It skews slightly younger while still being deep enough for the adults, it stands alone well even to a total Discworld newbie while still containing enough threads of the Discworld universe to please fans.. if done right this could be a Narnia-level of family fare that doesn't dumb things down too much for everyone else.

That may be true for /. types and their circles, but the throngs of people per day who buy a new phone off-the-shelf with a clunky java client preinstalled and don't go beyond that are more at risk. And that still leaves the problem of cost, where people will end up paying to get spammed.

  17. Mobile phones on Instant-Messaging Attacks On the Rise · · Score: 4, Insightful

This is going to cause more and more of a problem not just for Joe Average PC user, but for the growing numbers of people with IM capability on their mobile phones and other devices, where using a clean third-party client is not an option, and where many plans still charge by the message.
