I think science requires "faith" on a more basic level than just complex ideas. Scientists rely on sense experience to interpret all their data and posit all their results. Whether it is empirical tests or mathematical proofs, they rely on the senses.
It is purely by faith that we trust that our sense experience is accurate. Lest we all end up skeptics, humans have generally accepted that our sense experience is telling us the truth, but there is no empirical or mathematical way to prove this.
Everyone, scientists or not, take our basic mode of interacting with the world, on faith, as true. Failing to do so leaves us without any means of understanding the world around us, scientifically or not.
1) lipstick with a DNA detector to see if you let your friend borrow it
2) your car requires fingerprint identification on stearing wheel
3) your lawnmower can only mow your own lawn
4) flashlights only work within a 5 mile radius of your house
At least they can never DRM my pokemon cards. I can trade those puppies as much as my heart desires.
I would think that Linux has the best chance of gaining footing in the OS struggle through server software. While linux would be impractical for my grandmother (due to her lack of computer knowledge), that isn't a hurdle for sysadmins and the likes.

I have a friend who runs a bagel shop (coffee, sandwiches, bagels, etc...). He is moving to a larger location in order to provide free WiFi. The reason hes moving is because he experimented with WiFi before, and his old building was not big enough to accommodate all the extra buisness he recived when providing free WiFi. That to me sounds like a huge reason to provide free WiFi over paid.

Well according to your favorite and mine, Jack Thompson, the Sims is the new bad guy http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/07/22/news_61296 09.html Wow, now that EA peddles porn, you would think that matel and all the other makers of dolls would jump on that bandwagon. Who needs real nudity when you have a barbie.
I have a friend who works for a major phone company on the engineering end of their fiberoptics division. It seems that they are laying the infastructure right now (in the chicago area at least) and are using a loop style of wiring (they make huge circles that interconnect to give redundancy). He quotes that fiberoptics will start being offered in 2006 and will become common by 2008/2009 (in the chicago area)

They already have those neato Powerline networking modules that give you incredibly crappy speed (and unreliability) for lots of money. Power-line internet sounds like a winner to me!;)

There are other great technologies in play in Guild Wars. A streaming update system allows on the fly patching, content additions, and quest tweaks. Zones arround you are streamed so the number of files to load when you first enter a zone is minimal.
The game also changes for you based on choices you make. For example: if you do a quest that rids the world of "lizard men" then when you return to that zone, there are still no lizard men. If you return with someone who has not done the quest, there are only half as many lizard men as there would be if niether of you had done the quest.
The game focuses on skills gained rather than levels. As such, your spells do no more damage on leveling, they do more damage when skill points are put into them (gotten from leveling, completeing quests, doing PvP or GvG). That being said, the level cap is at 20.
For a free MMO (dissagree with the post before, the game is Massive, it is a multiplayer game, and it is online), the content is huge. There is so much to the game that after 4 Betas, I hadn't even scratched the surface
That was an interesting assertion about the predominance of piracy in P2P. I seem to remember a slashdot article about how the majority of Bittorrent and other P2P services were not used primarily for piracy. Maybe Grokster and StreamCast are different? I'm sure that wont help them. They need to focus on all the little old ladys that use P2P to send pictures of their Grandkids to the world.

I just hope this doesn't lead to a decline in Firefox use. Or maybe I do.......The more people that use Firefox, the more spyware, popups, and holes are exposed.........I hope everyone moves back to IE.

I think its smart knowing that the MPAA or RIAA will come after you next and just cut your losses and quit there. I think its really decietful to claim you are being sued to raise money so you can live in the Carribbean. A mixture of knowledge and deciet. He sounds just like a corporation.
You would think this fight would be over the digital "stuff" you own on the game (i.e. Swords, armor, charecter, etc...). I never thought of any company actually stopping you from selling a legal, physical
copy of the game. It only works against them. Imagine what would happen if cars worked like this too......

I don't know about everyone else but I did not move to Firefox becuase I thought it was fatser. I moved over because of the relative securty and opposed to IE and the super-neato plugins. Without mousegestures, webrowsing just isn't the same. Besides, most people who use Broadband internet won't notice a difference between browser speed.

I would never EVER buy a computer from Dell however Dell makes very nice Flat Panel Monitors. I recived one a a christmas gift from my uncle. He bought be a 17in and I really wanted a 19in, so I called Dell up and talked to a rep. Instead of having me send back the monitor, They let me keep it and gave me $200 off the $300 monitor. So I got 2 flat panels for $100. I have to say I was very pleased with Dell's service in that regard.

Sounds like the spam companies are targeting the baby boomer generation with Arthritis pills. This also happens to be an age group that would be less sucessful at knowing how to stop spam.

The point about showing commercials about anti-piracy in a theatre full of people who have just payed to watch the movie is just too much.
