I remember a couple of years ago I was in a swimming pool with friends. They had a little pool for kids to swim in, which was empty save for a gran & grandpa and their grandchild. They wanted to take a snapshot of the kid swimming for the first time, the lifeguard then came over and said they weren't allowed cameras and tried to confiscate it. They argued that it was only their grandkid even in the area let alone the shot. The manager was called and eventually the grandparents had to leave with no first photo of the kid swimming, which I'm sure would have been a treasured memory for the whole family.
That was a couple of years ago at least, but remember... I live in the UK. These rules are commonplace. I wouldn't be surprised if you're not allowed to take pictures of your own kid winning the race at sports days, just in case you're a pedophile.
Just had a thought... I know that there are photos of me and my sisters in the bath when we were very young. I think my mother has them in a drawer somewhere, should I report her to the authorities???
Imagine if they even charged $1 for every patch, for every user. There are more MS patches for a product than every dollar in the asking price for said product. I'm aware that Apple are scared because it's a "new feature", but MS has done that a lot.
It's a nice article, but does his opinion matter? It's the big cheeses that decide what goes, and so long as they are raking in the funds the little guy does not matter.
This title is completely ridiculous. It's sensationalist and makes it look like someone died using the Wii. The womans death has nothing to do with a Wii, it could have been a competition for anything.
It's been amusing watching my post get modded up, down, up, down, up, down. So many mod points, what a waste.... Can't wait for my comment moderation report - I bet it will be lengthy!
It's a bit harsh to call it stupidity; water poisoning isn't that well known. It is a condition that is known by users of the ecstasy community though, especially after Leah Betts, a case that happened in the UK some years back. I've known several people in this lifestyle and they were always conscious of the amount of water they were drinking - even when high as a kite. Not too much, but not too little either.
The knowledge is out there, just whether you've heard it or not.
A woman wasn't killed, she died as a result of self induced water intoxication. It's a difference that means a lot. The headline makes it sound like a sport killing of some kind. Would have been more appropriate to say "Woman dies In Wii-Related Competition".

I say this for two reasons. There's a genuinely nice kind of feedback, no feedback, and a vicious kind too. If I interviewed someone and they weren't up to scratch for whatever reason, I could say that they're not up to scratch for what I want and I don't need to give a reason. I could be more specific, but only when it suits me, the employer. They haven't got the experience I need, I could tell them that. Not suited to the job? I could tell them that too. I can be as vague as I want, it's my choice. Maybe their asking salary is too high. These are all reasons I could genuinely give to a candidate when rejecting them. Would I be specific if they were a threat to my codebase? No. And if I was a complete dick, I'd just reject applications with no feedback whatsoever, not even a rejection letter. They're applying to me, I don't owe them anything, right?
Most of my job applications in the past have never got a response. It's a lot easier if you don't want to employ / deal with someone to simply ignore them after the failed interview etc. There's no obligation to respond to every application you get with helpful tips for next time. If you get as far as interview, it's nice to know why you didn't succeed but you shouldn't expect it.
As for playing with them like your cat plays with injured mice, I don't want to even apply for your company. What the hell? If you're asking about liability, that might be a sticking point. Or, more seriously, how do you think telling an applicant the reason for not getting the job would make you liable? Unless you don't employ people who are black, disabled, female and so on as a matter of course. If you told someone they were the best damn whatever you ever saw, and afterwards they didn't get a job as a whatever, maybe - just maybe you could be liable. It would be very, very weak though.
As a company, you don't owe anyone an explanation, at all in most countries. So long as you're doing things in accordance with law anyway.
As an immigrant myself, who is paying on average around 25K GBP a year in taxes and NI (in other words, I'm paying about an average UK salary), who's never received a single penny in welfare payments, I get rather pissed off at assholes like you making generalizations. In fact, all the immigrants I know fall in the "inventive" kind - at least half a dozen of which are co-founders of VC funded startups, and paying similar levels of tax as I am. Tell you what, I'm happy to sacrifice my Slashdot Karma and tell you to fuck right off. You say you're paying 25,000gbp in tax? Fuck you. Fuck you so hard. If you're paying THAT MUCH TAX you shouldn't even be on the internet. Fuck off dickhead. What the hell do you do to pay that much in tax?
I didn't choose these policies. A labour government, and Bliar implemented these if I remember correctly. Wouldn't have had this shit under Thatcher. Bliar I think has taken on the title of "Worst Prime minster ever", at least in my eyes.
Don't kid yourself, there are plenty of native-born losers there too.

It's still an easier pill to swallow for the people who were born and raised here, than people coming to the UK to deliberately defraud the government out of welfare. Heck, a lot of losers have never worked a day in their lives (I know several people like this, all British) but at least their parents probably worked and paid tax. It is a big problem in the UK, because we are so open to 'refugees' etc, and there is a lot of upset within the populace of England about these "damn foreigners" coming to steal our tax, just so they can send the money back home. We don't get the inventive kind of immigrant here, generally just the mooching kind.
It would be nice if there were some decent 2-3 player games on the PSP. Racing games are awful, as there is no AI player. My friends and I reverted to Worms World Party on the NGage, it's the best multiplayer for a handheld in my eyes. WWP is awful on the PSP, there's no cool weapons!
I already use Google Spreadsheet for all my spreadsheet work (I've actually removed my office suite entirely as of last week).
I work in accounting, and Google Spreadsheets just don't cut it. I work with Pivot tables every day for instance, and enormous amounts of data. Google spreadsheets are not practical for me.
This was discovered some time ago.
I found this while browsing yesterday. Need a lot of hits though, more than I could generate.

Let's just stick to streaming audio, or even downloadable mp3s. You don't have to "podcast" to be heard. There are other alternatives.
Thanks for shattering my illusions. I thought programming languages were as they were, are, and always will be. I'm going to sue you.

I tried poaching eggs before, but the farmer chased me away =(
About time too!
(Sorry...couldn't resist)
She's been dead a while now. It wouldn't matter if I did or didn't.

Winner: Wii. Wii always wins.
Nobody messes with Adam Wii..... >-(
It's not actually for sale, the owners are just offering a tenancy. Which makes it not such a sweet deal.
You should know that the commute is a bitch.

I want to know why the WordArt is all pretty, shiny and new in Excel, but not in Word - where you'd want more word art??
