So.. How big would a planet need to be in mars's orbit to retain heat? It's hard for me to believe that Earth in Mars's orbit would be significantly different than Mars. Mars is significantly smaller than Earth and Venus, but I thought still a pretty sizable inner solar system planet.
Mass of Earth: 5.976e+24kg
Mass of Mars: 6.421e+23kg
Mass of Venus: 4.869e+24kg
I can heartily recommend anything from Visioneer. I picked up the 8920 for Christmas last year, and it's a top quality flatbed scanner. It has the added features of a cover mounted light for scanning slides/negatives, and also the cover can be removed for scanning oversized items. It looks like the new model is the 9220 at around $70, but any older model off e-bay would probably be more than acceptable. I can't recommend Umax, I've had too many of those be either junky or just plain crap out.
You know, this is kind of funny.. About two months ago, all of my machines were seized because I was (of all things) under suspicion of dealing heroin. It didn't matter that they found no heroin or anything suspicious on my premises, they grabbed the machines anyways. 2 windows machines, 1 linux. When they took them, they gave me a lot of hassle about the linux box.. "What do you do with the linux machine, boy?" and so on... I got the machines back today, and although they had viciously searched the windows machines (including physically ruining one of the harddrives)... I'm pretty sure they didn't even bother the linux box. I thought it was pretty ridiculous anyways, I mean, if I was doing drug deals with my computer, I'd use knoppix and have no HD at all. Not that I've given it much thought. The only real evidence for something like that would need to come from ISP logs, imho.
I'm still waiting for Google messenger.. Everyone I know switched from ICQ to MSN messenger about 6 years ago, around the time when everyone had hotmail accounts and it was just so much more convenient to add an email address than a 8 digit number. Well, nobody uses hotmail accounts anymore.
True.. I may come off as being whiney and uninformed as well, but I can remember when the 3dFX Voodoo2 was measurably better than the Voodoo. The Geforce2 was better than the Geforce, the Geforce3 better than the geforce2... I mean, you're going to have your stinker pieces of hardware, but both Nvidia and ATI's product line now is absolutely not linear. The Radeon 9600 is slower than the 9500... The Geforce 5200 is slower than a Geforce4 ti..
For all those that are going to ask me for hard benchmark data... Find it yourself.:) I'm too busy trying to sell my Radeon 9250.
Anyone else that accidentally bought an ATI Radeon 9250 knows what I'm talking about.. Why is it acceptable to rename the 8500 to 9250, just to make it sound more "relevant" in the modern market? The fact is that if you're going to buy a vidcard you have to do a crapload of research. Period. You can't stand in the PC store and say, "I dunno, what you got for $50?" anymore. You'll end up with a pile of junk. Another good example is the Geforce 4mx, basically a rebranded Geforce 2.
Pretty soon Earth is chock full of sunbeams...their rotting corpses heating our atmosphere.
Fortunately our handsomest politicians came up with a cheap, last minute way to combat global warming. Ever since 2063 we drop a giant ice cube into the ocean every now and then.
Of course, since the greenhouse gases are still building up, it takes more and more ice each time. Thus solving the problem once and for all.
Hm. Perhaps I should reassess my theorum... I've never lived _in_ a city without having access to DSL, but have lived without access to cablemodem in nearly every place I've lived, so I was broadly generalizing...
So, apparently, it is quite possible to have Cablemodem service without DSL. It would be interesting to hear from the original poster on the subject.
You're moving to someplace without DSL, but _with_ cellular service. You're not planning on getting a local phoneline (so you're not going to dial-up).. How are you planning on connecting to Slashdot?:)
As near as I can tell, you have 3 options (since it's a near certainty that wherever DSL is not, cable isn't either)...
1) Cell phone (Slow & expensive)
2) Satellite (Starband)... DSL downstream, dial-up speeds upstream... plus no internet when it rains hard
3) ISDN (depending on where you live maybe Expensive).. I live in "You've got a pretty mouth", TN.. ISDN is a workable solution here.. But then again, ISDN lines don't have carrier voltage in the US. (Who cares, you can just use your cell phone in the event of power-outage)
Point is, for all of your strong words, the odds of you not ending up with a telephone line to connect to your beloved Slashdot are somewhere between slim & none.
It's interesting how uncommon knowledge this is. I've seen this thread pop up on slashdot among everywhere else, and the single answer remains: the astronauts insisted that the actual dropping the landing gear mechanism be completely manual.. The landing gear can only be retracted by a ground crew, so any premature dropping of the mechanism would be instant and total death for everyone on board, no matter what they were doing at the time.
The Buran could do this, but a craft would have to be built from scratch if you wanted to put it into space, along with the energiya booster setup.
I'm reminded of Heinlein's "Starship Troopers", the planet "Sanctuary".
"Like Earth, but retarded. Literally retarded, like a kid who takes ten years to learn to wave bye-bye and never does manage to master patty-cake. It is a planet as near like Earth as two planets can be, same age according to the planetologists and its star is the same age as the Sun and the same type, so say the astrophysicists. It has plenty of flora and fauna, the same atmosphere as Earth, near enough, and much the same weather; it even has a good-sized moon and Earth's exceptional tides. With all these advantages it barely got away from the starting gate. you see, it's short on mutations; it does not enjoy Earth's high level of natural radiation."

Maybe it has something to do with why I haven't gotten any mod points in the last couple weeks.. I used to get them every few days... Something was probably "fixed"
or maybe it's my habit of metamoderating unfair trolls as "unfair".;)
Well, I said that if it can be seen with a 6" newtonian reflector, then it can possibly be a planet. I didn't say that all things seen from earth are planets. I also defined the type of telescope, granted the optics in nicer telescopes are different than in crummier telescopes, but the total light grab in any 6" newtonian reflector is pretty similar. Hell, you could even define it as: "A planet can only be a planet if it can be observed through a 60mm Tasco refractor while standing in a puddle of urine in bumblefuck, TN". The point is that all real planets can be observed quite easily, while the kuiper belt cannot.
Okay, how about this one for arbitrary definitions of planets:
How about, a planet has to be visible from earth, using an amateur telescope.
So, if you can observe the object with no light pollution utilizing a 6" newtonian reflector... Then it can be a planet. It's no less arbitrary than necessary.
I'm with you. As far as a just plug in and there you go Linux distribution goes, I don't think that Mandrake (Mandriva) can be beat.. I'm loving Kubuntu, though, I think it's the tops... Despite some issues, since KDE really isn't the supported window manager for Ubuntu.
Have you tried Cedega for running windows apps? It's not free, but it's CHEAP and it has worked for everything I've tried, most especially games. Photoshop works under it, and I do all my video editing with VirtualDub.. So I don't have to jump through any hoops for that one.
They have it working in Anarchy Online for the free players. http://www.anarchyonline.com/
Seems to me, if you're not paying for the game, this isn't such a bad idea. I'd love to see AO extend their free accounts past January 16, 2006 and have them be funded by this. I don't know if it's possible, but it's not intrusive, really. The ads only exist on billboards inside the cities, and generally, they fit into the world. For example, an ad for AlienWare PC's.. It all looks kind of future anyways, something you could expect to see on a futuristic billboard. Now, if they decide to start subjecting me to ads on my paid EQ or WoW account.. Well, then that account is going out the window.
Haiku OS (Formerly OpenBeos) is (as I understand it) still a long way away from release, and is at the "pile of code" stage. http://haiku-os.org/learn.php?mode=faq_normal
Beos PE R5 is still available from BeBits and works on older machines http://www.bebits.com/app/2680
and Beos MAX will work on newer machines, it's a hack of the old closed source with some newer drivers and some extra functionality like being bootable. http://www.bebits.com/app/3892
The BeosMAX people have expressed that they would release no more versions once Zeta released, so I guess 3.1Beta1 is _it_. I still think it's an OS with a place. I loved it when I was first introduced to it by BeOS PE (FREE!), and was surprised that it hadn't caught on. Snappy, usable, friendly. A surprising number of linux apps release for BeOS as well, including Firefox (but not openoffice), Freesci, Sarien, Dosbox...
The worst part is, your comment is legitimate. Nobody can rule out something like that, because it's something that our fearless leader would do. Did he do it? No one can say. But you certainly can't rule it out. I'll be modded troll for sure, but I still haven't ruled him out for the 9/11 attacks. He's dangerous, he's certifiable, and I sure didn't vote for him this time around.
