However, if a Nation-State has a relationship with the United States, there will be treaties and frameworks usually that'll help shut this stuff down. Plus, your ISPs could just block thier domain names.
Maybe if you could convince North Korea to be a webhost. Of course you'd have to tag each page with "Kill Jong Il rulz!", "Die Capitalist Pigs!", and only after each video has been properly screened...
Though seriously... North Korea is pretty hard up for money these days and is looking for economic help so if you offered money, technology, state secrets, or food aid they might be willing. Although this might arouse serious suspicions from the CIA though...
There is always Somalia but you'd have to hire your own private army.
It's a little disconcerting that a "structural" problem would be found only 15 minutes before the launch.
My hunch is someone knew about it a while before hand. They just were reading meters and got that gut feeling that their prior knowledge was going to cause a failure.
That or they were just being anal...
When your dealing wtih rocket science you do have to be anal.
Just because I'm aiming to make a profit off of you, doesn't mean that it's a bad thing. In fact the basis of a truly 'free' economy in the sense that free-marketers talk of it, is that every interaction is a win-win.
Unfortunatley, the problem isn't they are trying to make a profit... It is the fact they are using the law and power to prevent anyone else from competing with them. Regulation and free market can go both ways...
If a free market has a healthy competing group of companies and they aren't preventing entry level companies from joining... Then leave them the hell alone.
If a free market has a stagnant non-competing group of companies in a cartel that is activley preventing new entry level companies from joining the market, then the government has to step in to break that cartel up just like President Teddy did back with the train and oil barons.
Otherwise we as bad off as a planned economy in Soviet Russia.
I think Telsa had something that could transmit power wirelessly at least in a demonstration. According to the wiki article it was over to lite up a vacuum tube.
How much better is it morally to threaten people by starving their family to death one by one rather than by shooting them one by one?
If you found yourself on an island with no food through no fault of your own or anyone else, who is responsible?
Who are you going to blame? No one is forcing you to starve. You just happen to end up in a bad situation that is just bad for you.
Likewise in India... There is no forced capaign of forced starvation. This isn't like Cambodia back in the late 70's or the Ukrainian genocide in the 1930's under Stalin. No one is physically removing food from them (maybe indirectly through capitalism, but like I said this isn't a national campaign to exterminate a group of people).
A point I would like to make, under the same thinking you could say Communist China forced those Tibetan monks to set themselves on fire... That is not the case. They used their free will to make a choice and stand up for what they believed in.
You must realize that these people have free will even though they were born in some of the worst possible conditions a human could face. They just choose not to exercise it whether it means revolting against the powers that be or even putting an end to their own existance or just finding simple ways in their daily life to feed their families better.
The problem is that people don't believe that they have a choice in the matter because of economic, racial, or caste restrictions. The cop out and say... "well fuck... I'm on a stranded island with no food so I'll just put up with it"
It is a bad situation which I have sympathy with this, but you also have to remember to deny these people means of earning income is just as bad.
We can't fix the system with politics. Maybe we can solve it with technological progress... Heck weve reduced world poverty from 400 million in the 1990's to 200 some million by 2004 (according to Ray Kurzweil) but you have to realize that life isn't pretty and we should focus on solving the the direct issue itself instead of blaming things we have no control over.
FTFA: After all, video game industry representatives, along with their brethren in the music, film and computer software industries, have long complained that this is precisely the kind of thinking that is eating away at their business models - and maybe civilization itself.
You know the Romans said the same thing about their business model and their civilization. Unfortunatley, they didn't think that maybe they should actually find a new model that works instead of fighting tooth and nail to make it fit to a fast changing world that made them obsolete...
Emperor MPAA: "Huns and visigoths be damned! I won't tolerate such barbaric behavior! They think they can just steal our wares without behaving." Reasonable person: "But your highness! Maybe we should make it that we offer our treasures for a reasonable price to the barbarians! Then they wouldn't steal!" Senator RIAA: "But they'll reverse engineer our fine artisan wares and make their own!" Reasonable person: "But... If we don't offer our wares at a reasonable price in the online market place the barbarians will sack our cities and steal the wares !" Emperor MPAA: "In that case... Summon the imperial army of lawyers we will crush them under our mighty sandals of justice... (Two months later) Emperor MPAA: "What do you mean they wiped out our army of lawyers. I thought we could sue every last person on the planet. Oh wait is that Rome burning! Oh noes the barbarians have broken down the gate! So much for that idea..." Pope Apple the II: "If its any consolation my organization I'll be converting them to true way over 2,000 years after you guys are collecting dust in some forgotten crypt. Maybe you guys should have listed to the Reasonable person."
Maybe we can put some of these poor into concentrated areas. Maybe camps. Maybe call them concentrated camps or maybe concentration camps where you can perform drug tests, and also other helpful experiments.
Last I checked, those people in camps weren't paid. Secondly, they didn't volunteer. Lastly, most of them weren't poor until their personal property wasn't forcefully removed from their persons.
Look, these people are poor but they'd rather be poor than be those people that went to those camps.
Oh and I bet you are unaware of the underground medical trade in southeast asia. People have been known to sell off kidneys and spare eyes to make ends meat. They are going to be volunteering for money on a lot of medical things whether you like it or not.
I didn't say they would behave just like boys (they'd still have desires to mate and what not with opposite sex), but more accordindly than if you treated them as a mob mentality. Of course most humans would act better if they acted like an individual rather than a person of a group following trends.
we could accept that men and women are different in nature, very different and that men perform better on technical skills than women, period.
I know plenty of woment who are technicaly apt as or moreso than me when it comes to computers. They are a rare beast (don't tell them I said that) but usually are the girls who did not wish to be girls.
I wouldn't say genetic, but more social. These girls tended to read more than be into social things and often perferred arts over standard. They were either a only child or were the only girl in the family of boys (hence being tom boy).
If we took girls and from day one didn't give them dolls but instead war toys and playstations and treated them indistinguisble than boys then they would behave accordingly.
If we give them this Paris Hilton, diamond rings mean love, and they should bread children crap then that is how they are going to act.
This girls all know how to install an OS, fix a registry, play video games, and like Harry Potter for some reason. (I don't know why they all like Harry Potter but they do) some of them even play online games such as WoW and every now and then they'll be a jem and like Halo more than me (you just have to look harder men! don't give up on the first lady that'll sleep with you! find one that will play Halo with you, whoop your ass, and then sleep with you!)
As an individual they can overcome this... Not to say some of you guys should overcome sports, porn, and plain ignorant behavior but I'm just saying I think it is more social than genetic.
Strangley enough I own all of those and play on a DS. I was talking more or less about a time when the console would come with a good game... In fact the headliner of the console.
More examples come to mind:
SNES: Super Mario World Genesis: Sonic the Hedgehog etc etc
Now if you buy a console... It doesn't come with a game nor are most of the other games a killer app so to say. I'll admit that even Nintendo has shied away from this practice. I had to purchase Mario DS seperatley and it wasn't even that great of a first game. Now it appears the DS lineup is maturing and the games really excellent now.
This might be just the way the development cycle works now... Get the console out first and then make the good games 6 months down the road.
Wouldn't it just be better to invest in prevention instead of thinking about all this high tech when the damage has already been made?
Prevention won't prevent death by natural causes.
Advanced technologies will.
To expand on this idea. Will eating right and being healthy prevent you from dying of a genetic disorder? How about physical accident like an intensive care rendering car crash? Not to mention incurable illnesses like Parkinson's or Alzheimer's.
Of course this doesn't mean you shouldn't live a healthy life, but I'd put more support behind technological advances in medicine.
Honestly, if they end up beating out Microsoft, that will not usher in a brand new utopian Heaven-on-Earth. It will not be Kingdom Come. If they replace Microsoft, all that will mean is that they'll become the new Microsoft.
I think that is overblown. Microsoft won't just up and go away anytime soon. It would be more like a cold war versus two super powers if at all.
However, given the choice between living under the rule of one or the other, I'd pick Apple. I mean Apple has tended to be not as nasty in the ligitation and business practices as Microsoft (I mean they have but not on that scale and they've been around just as long) and their CEO is a buddhist.
Secondly, I don't expect Apple to force all PCs in the market to conform to have their OS on it. In fact their deadset against the idea and want only Macs to run their OS. Unlike the other company...
Well, if Mac users cannot get hold of a supported copy of IE, then it might force websites (such as your bank), to test their websites against browsers other than IE.
Well there were many sites that IE for the Mac just wouldn't support. Remember IE for the Mac was made by a seperate team from scratch and didn't support things like Active X and all the Java Virtual Machine code that the windows version supported.
As someone pointed out in a previous article about WoW vs SWG, the reason why WoW is so popular with Asian internet cafe goers is because you can smoke and play the game at the same time.
I know quite a few people who smoke at their computer and play MMOGs (especially WoW) at home and if they can't do it then they'll most likley get annoyed.
Personally, I like to drink and play games and let me tell you... It is a bitch to try to drink alcoholic beverages while playing Unreal Tournament 2004. It can be done but I tend to have to get in sips between death and respawn.
If this was something constant in which it would 5 minutes between breaks then I'd probally end up dying or dropping my drink all over the floor when something jumps me and I need an extra hand.
But that implies creationism. Slashdot told me that Creationists are nothing but stupid people trying to slow the advancement of science. What am I to think:(
Jefferson was a deist. He'd probaly agree with Darwin.
We know now how far the government is willing to go to "protect" us, and they'll do it again in a heartbeat.
Unfortunatley, we Americans aren't brave enough to accept death as the price of freedom like our forefathers. At least let us fight for our freedom before taking it away through government acts.
By buying and outsourcing all the evil to a company that's very good at being evil?
I'd hardly call purchasing 5% of a companies shares "buying a company" to outsource to. I think its more of a technique to make AOL not be evil during the share holder meetings.
However, if a Nation-State has a relationship with the United States, there will be treaties and frameworks usually that'll help shut this stuff down. Plus, your ISPs could just block thier domain names.

And every single damn one of them Zerg rushes.

Everything in life "claims lives." Driving claims lives. Taking a bath claims lives. Sitting on the couch claims lives.
I was about to suggest that you forgot to mention posting to Slashdot claims lives... but I realized we don't have any real lives to claim.

Best seventeen seconds of my life.....
You mean the time it took her to realize she answered your question: "Will you not not go out with me?" incorrectly
The only other sub 5 digiter I met claimed he bought his on ebay.

Because you don't get the option to configure your business PC with nVidia SLI.
or other browsers that happen to closely mimic its behavior.
