Imagine if he had had encrypted files on one of his computers. OSX has a feature that 128-bit encrypts your home directory. Its pretty much automatic, you just turn it on. I used to use it (for no real reason other then novelty), but once they started the random subway search thing in NYC I turned it off. If something like this was to happen and the HDD was encypted they would never let you out.
I think you are missing the joke here, but you are right.
A guy I work with has otherwise spottless credit, but he was almost turned down for an apartment based on his credit report. He got a copy of his credit report and it turned out he had checked out a bunch of books from the city library during his sophmore year of school and never returned them. The library had filed with a collection agency to recover the lost $300 some dollars worth of property (and possibly fines, I don't remember), it totally screwed his credit score.
If the person in question governs an incorporated jurisdiction, the incorporated jurisdiction indemnifies that person in the course of performing their duty (unless they do something illegal). Most private corps do the same.
Unless I'm crazy or just dead wrong, states are incorporated.
It will really come down to wether or not Apple will decide to go head to head with MS on the x86 plateform... In other words a version of OSX for everyone. I'm not putting money on it either way, but I have a feeling that they might decide to go for it.
I know this is/. and that this is not something that you say here if you want to keep your karma, but...
I think that OSX will be more of a threat to Linux in a few years then Linux a threat to OSX. OSX has a muscular open-source bottom with a shapely Apple designed top. Linux on the other hand kicks ass only on the bottom. Its great for servers, but I doubt it will compete on the desktop.
The only reason grabbing headlines is passe is because its easy to create a PC virus. Its an accomplishment on the other hand to infect unix boxes (Macs especially because they are popular and their smug users think they are invulnerable;-). The guy who writes the first big Mac virus will go down in history, the next guy who writes a Windows virus will not.
I'm a Mac user, and I love the platform. I on the other hand came to Mac via NeXT so I know at least a little about what is under the hood. I'm not overly concerned about security, but I still lock my boxes down.
Even simple things like not giving your primary user account admin privelages (something almost all Mac users do, in my experience) goes a long way to tighten security. Granted Admin privs on a Mac are not quite as bad as running around as root, but still, you shouldn't do it.
I live in Brooklyn, and a nasty part of it none the less. Long story as to why I moved here...
I'm not too worried about survival (I'll be leaving this winter; moving into a.5 million dollar home in Baltimore. Plus, NYC has a very low murder rate compared to most American cites.)...
Still as far as selection goes, my neighbor is clearly the victor. Ultimately his family will in the long term have a much greater chance of survival then mine, based on shear numbers alone. He works as a janitor (kinda), makes maybe 25k-30k, but has 9 kids by three different women (8 really, the 9th is expected in December). I OTOH have none (granted he is 4 years older then me... he is 29 and unmarried, had his first child at the age of 17).
Chances are, most if not all of his children will survive to reproductive age. Its also likely that few will attend college (though this really is speculative, I'm just basing it off of the fact none of their parents or grand-parents did, AFAIK).
Chances are that I will have few or no children: My girlfriend is on the pill and another prescription medication which further limits her fertility because it would require an abortion if she were to become pregnant within a year of taking it (the medication causes severe birth defects).
Even if we do wind up reproducing, I really doubt I will have more then 2 or 3 children. My neighbor OTOH, whom definitely has a lower quality education (intelligence is too subjective to judge) has definitely been far more prolific then I will ever be, though I had and probably will have a far greater quality of life.
Ironically, because we have access to excellent health care (much more so then my neighbor) we are able to choose sterility. That is not the case for my neighbor, whom cannot/will-not control reproduction (as he has complained in his own words during our infrequent conversations).
There is no welfare involved here. All parents mentioned here work and support themselves and their children (to the best of my knowledge).
Its all about the analog sholder buttons in my opinon, much easier driving. I've played both and though it took some getting used to having played Vice City on the PS2, in the end I really found the XBox controls to be better suited to the game.
Obviously I realize that this is simply my preference; but this is/. the place to start a stupid argument.
My question is whether or not the color screen can be seen in broad daylight. If its like my cell phone, the answer is no.
I suppose it doesn't matter anyway. I'm finally gonna bite and get an iPod (a black nano). I've been resisting the urge for years, but it being available in black just sold me. Anyone know when the Manhattan store will have them in stock?
Pussies. Last time I was at a kegger (which was admittedly a while ago), they had a tub full of ever-clear and koolaid mix, basically 100% alcohol. $5 at the door, all you can drink (they had regular drinks too).
Joking aside, I suppose the point of my comment is that there is a sense of "drink as much as you want it doesn't matter" during the college years.
Perhaps its because drinking is illegal (and therefor you have already crossed the line), perhaps not. The upshot is that about 30% of the people I know graduated with pretty bad drinking problems, though during college such behavior was more or less encouraged by their peers (while being condemned by the authorities).
My history teacher back in high-school told me that the "reason" they raised the drinking age back to 21 was because IDs were easy to fake back then and its much easier for a 15 year old to pass for 18 then 21. Given that ID technology has progressed, perhaps its time to lower the age.
Maybe if it wasn't illegal you could convince college students to have a little sense when it came to consumption.
I'm almost positive the next incarnation of GTA will be released in dual versions. If they are smart they will release the AO version a few months after the M version so that they can get some people to buy 2 copies.
Their actual business plan, in classic/. business plan format:
1) Mine Mars for ore to be made into steel and water to be converted to oxygen.
2) Fling material into space using mass drivers.
3) Build Death Star.
4) Hold Earth for ransom.
5) ???
6) Profit!
When I take off my tin foil hat, I hear voices that tell me that the landings were faked.;-)
Seriously though, I think the somewhat hair-brained presidential directive involves building a base there. Stands to reason a "jump jet" vehicle would be useful in that.
And finally, to get on my soap box: A lunar outpost and manned martian exploration really isn't that bad of an idea. Sure, they are arbitrary goals that could be done via robotics, but so was landing on the Moon in the first place. Its not like we didn't know what we would find. Doing things the hard way leads to problems, which lead to innovation. I for one would like more Velcro and Tang.
Space exploration is an example of humanity at its best. People who bitch about the cost should instead be bitching about our crazy defense budget, much of which goes to maintaining obsolete weapons that no one thinks will ever be even slightly useful again.
Isn't Christ's words somewhat fallible though, as he is part man? IANAC and know nearly nothing about the religion except what I have absorbed via cultural osmosis, but I thought that was the meaning of the "Father, why has though forsaken me?" bit.
Just curious really, as this has become a bit of a religious debate. I remember a friend who was raised catholic talking about how the bible constantly alternated between referring to him as "Son of God" and "Son of Man". I'm sure there are many interpretations.

It is odd that there seems to be so much Google=bad going around these days.
I wonder if someone is coordinating it all. After all, the general sentiment seems to be that Google=good, so all this Google=bad stuff could clearly be someone's doing.

Damn, someone is about to be very rich, I think.
