This is precisely why PS3 is struggling. Developers cant write good code anymore for multitude of reasons. Some can't because they have no time, some because they plain stupid, some because they learned to program on Windows or Linux where you have almost unlimited memory. PS3 is typical embedded system with lots of constraints and funky hardware that needs special care.
From DDJ article and it appears that PS3 will never be successful. To get efficient execution one has to turn 70 line program in to 1200 line one, increasing number of bugs and code size in the process. As a result you get 30% efficiency out of the chip?! You have to hand optimize for simd and dual issue because compiler will not. All while trying to compete with other consoles and trying to put out new game for Christmas. It may be fine in a research settings, where all you want is to optimize one algorithm, but it will not work for a game company.
So as a result they only try to make game on PS3 to look as good as xbox game does. There is no incentives to make it any better. PS3 may be the most powerful game console but its power will always be underutilized.
Phishing is like any other business - the fool is parted from his money. It is no different than penis enlargement pills, stock advise or low interest mortgages(do I hear subprime?). Probably the only difference that customer does not get a perceived value, or gets less of it.
I use Clie for several years to read books. Initially I used project Gutenberg books processed with plucker. Then I found that there are tons of books available on P2P. I tried to find books to purchase but most of them come in proprietary format and can't be used by my palm. I would never go back to paper book unless I have no choice. Here are advantages of e-book reader: 1. Backlight - you can use reader when it is dark without disturbing people around you, like your sleeping wife. 2. You can carry several books on business trips and on the plane. I can fit probably 20 books on my 16mb device or much more on 32mb memory stick. I can go on a month long business trip and never run out of reading material. 3. Small and light - fits in my shirt pocket and weights less than a book. Very important when traveling. 4. Remembers page where you left it - you can read while standing in line in the store or any other line. 5. Has unlimited bookmarks and you can take notes right on the device. I hated bending corners of book pages, never did that. 6. Accessible - anyone can read it and works anywhere. It does not need network connection ether and with universal charger works anywhere in the world. I never had a problem so far. 7. Keeps other records handy. I use it for keeping my car maintenance log and other info. 8. Robust if you are careful with it - so far I only had 2. First I bought refurbished for $69 and second some years later on craigslist for $25. 9. Long battery life - mine lasts for 2 weeks if backlight isn't used. 10. Has dictionary lookup handy.
Over all I think it beats paper book hands down but of course it has downsides - like you cant take it to the month long desert hike. But so far I never taken one of these.
I would want my next reader be:
* small - to fit in my shirt pocket
* light - no heavier than my clie S360
* have possibility of memory expansion using sd cards
* have e-inc black and white screen - readable like paper if possible
* support pdf - this is optional. I can convert pdf to html and import html.
* have a backlight so I can read it in the dark.
While I am not sure the invention does work at all, but banning all discussion about some fact does not make the said fact go away, instead it will make sure that we will make no progress.
Let me remind you that until not so long ago every one was sure that the earth was flat and that it was the center of the universe. Today we probably have no proof that that of similar device will work but give it some time and someone will prove it. Even if this device works despite our current theories what is wrong with using it? A lot of medications for example work in mysterious ways but we keep using them. We also used fire for a very long time without understanding exactly how it works.
>>Yeah, that's the copy protection feature. Hollywood finally figured out that if you can view it, you >>can copy it. If they simply make the content unplayable, nobody can pirate the movie!
The content was unwatchable before and now it is unplayable. Now there is no incentives to copy it at all.
I have a solution that would benefit everyone and will most probably work:
1. We all buy penis enlargement remedies advertised by spam.
2. We all enlarge our penises to some manageable size, I say 15-20 inches.
3. Spammers have no marked to sell their wares.
4. Spam stops for good.
5. Profit.
You clearly looking at the wrong section of craigslist, I guess you could be lonely. There are other sections like local buy/sell listings and jobs. I sold and bought few things using craigslist. We also found a wonderful nanny for our baby using craigslist. It is a great site!
In "real dollars" average salary should be going up but according to numerous studies it ether flat or down. I really don't think that with the price of gas, housing and energy being what it is now there is much of disposable income left in people's hands.
My daily commute is 60 miles round trip and so is of most people. If this car would cost $20K or so I would definitely buy it. If it can be recharged overnight in 4 or 5 hours it is good enough for today.
Modern hybrid cars give marginally better savings than small gasoline powered cars. Examples? Prius goes about 50MPG and probably even less on freeway. New Corolla goes 41MPG on freeway. Even my 10 yars old Corolla does 36MPG. Given that Prius costs almost double what Corolla does it does not tranlate to savings at the end. This was confirmed by multitude of consumer magazines. So if someone can come up with the reasonably priced electric car that can compete, more power to them.
More advanced (and expensive) 3D hardware is coming out but the gameplay still sucks. There is almost nothing that UT2004 added to UT2003 except the new game types which could have been implemented on 2003. Doom3 despite all it's graphics glory is mediocre game.
More and more money is pumped into the game and less and less imagination. Just like Hollywood movies. Don't get me wrong, I am all for progress in the graphic cards. But graphics do not make the game. When I am playing UT, I have no time to look at the special effects, I am more concerned with staying alive. Game must have a good gameplay not just good graphics.
Exactly. It is just about the only thing that runs on my Qube. The OS is actually pretty good, easy to use and secure. Very good server OS to run on mips hardware.
Unfortunately with the new war on porn, recently announced by FBI, we soon too will be prevented from looking and wholesome bikini-clad girs. Will we also become a terrorists at that time? What a sad state of affairs.
Reports show that majority of the customers prefer macdonalds. The same reports show that majority of the customers prefer not to be fat as well as not to excersize.
Another reports show that clock is still blinking on most VCRs.
The bottom line is that majority of the customers ether does not know what they want or want something for completely the wrong reason.
Privoxy (http://www.privoxy.org/ is the best web accelerator. It accelerates by removing ads which probably comprise about 50% of data on the page. It improves any connection and has added benefit of improving privacy. It is also cross platform.
There is nothing wrong with flash. The use of it is wrong. From animation and multimedia tool it morphed in to ad delivery tool. That is why my privoxy blocks any trace of flash and activex. If website has flash on it and no html, I turn to the other website. That is why in 6 years working for SONY, I visited their main site only few times. If advertizers think they can bombard me with ads online, they have another thing coming. This is my turf, my computer and I am in control. This is not a TV and even there they are loosing battle with PVR. Maybe now not many people are using ad blockers but this number will increase. I think it is a lost war for advertisers
If guns are not illegal in this country P2P should not be! Guns are designed for one purpose only - to kill something or someone. This is much worse than getting some crappy movie for free.
So P2P is not like a broadsword by any stretch. It was not designed for any illegal activity - it was designed to exchange infromation. If it is illegal to exchange information in US then we deserve for P2P to be outlawed. We are the ones who elected these dick-heads in congress who is making sure that their corporate sponsors are happy.
P2P is very useful tool to me. I use it every day to distribute free software without having to pay for a huge pipe. So P2P is more like an axe which you can use to build a table or to chop someone's head off.
That is true but it would be hard to make a wodden case as thin as plastic one. Plastic is probably stronger than wood, at least plastic that goes in to laptop cases.
I don't care if 64-bit anything is supported. I have my old mips hardware that I want to keep alive. Not everyone needs 64-bit, 3+GHz, boiling hot machine to supplement size of their member. Debian was out of mainstream, it provided very stable releases which you could rely upon for production machine. If it will be more like RedHat or Fedora what is the point?

Sony Computer Entertainment accounts for over half of Sony Corporation revenues. So yes playstation can make or break the company.
Same as Apple fans.g if

"Probe launched to Uranus" - that is funny.
Sorry could not help it.

This is one of the strangest moves in my opinion. What other choice do I have for running linux on MIPS?
