Andrew,
I admire your efforts. Yes chdk is pretty cool, but your solution is much better. Whats the cost, for a hacker to get one of these?
We teamed with Analog Devices for a bit, with their blackfin DSP to speed up image processing for demo cameras (I used to work for Aptina, AKA Micron, in R&D test of new sensors..)

This kit is FREE open source for the Cannon Powershot, with many of the features mentioned in the article, including HDR.
Download it onto a cf flash, and it replaces the Cannon OS. Many amazing images 1/50,000 milkdrop captures, night scenes etc can be found at

I give the Russians a week before they realize this is a vodka distillation apparatus.
Pee out the window guys, the system is tied up making us a batch of Stolychnia!
I worked with Shure, there was a project to create finer tip diamond stili to go below the wear in grooves for the Library of Congress. It was succesful, I know some Edison cylinders were recovered this way.
I had a friend that was working on a laser technique too, I don't know what ever happened to that.
I did my own optical data recovery of cylinders, with stepper motor drives tracking at recording pitch and a video microscope. I used frame grabbers and some code to convert the longitudinal recorded tracks back to sampled data.
I would love to re spin this idea with new hardware, and a source of cylinders.
Where is Donald's hand writing?
How can/. 'ers read this without thinking about Computer Graphic Modern, TeX and metafont?
Certainly nobody has given the concentrated study, and thought to computer typography as Donald E. Knuth.
Nolan has not had a good idea since Chuck E Cheese.
I imagine there is a StarWars esque bar where where all the stellar tech geezers hang out, drinking retro-tech Kool-Aid and toasting to their latest bad ideas.
"Hey Woz, the US festival sounds like a great idea, Get your wife to handle the tickets!"
Too bad we turned off the Apollo ALSEP package, the seismometer experiments. I had the joy of working with the data team, and on one of the lunar missions they crashed the Apollo S4-B stage into the moon. The seismic event lasted for an hour. The moon is a homogeneous sphere, no core.
I had cartography friend tell me that often map errors were introduced intentionally as a form of copyright. A mapmaker inserts a bogus item, street, landmark etc. into the map as a watermark to detect copies of his work.
I can no longer sit back and allow, communist subversion, communist infiltration, and the greater communist conspiracy to sap, and impurify all our precious bodily fluids!
Also way ahead of its time. But for something really interesting, take a lok at this guy who spent 4 years replicating it in his basement!

With fronds like that, who needs enemies?
