  1. Yes defensive. on Dell Protests 'Not Wintel's Lapdog' · · Score: 1

Because their operation's value is in the Walmart approach. BUT being an online operation, they could be based anywhere. Their innovation and technology initiatives are limited to retail, which means they will eventually be beat by Lenovo. Eventually, these operations will be entirely offshore, unless the Yuan gets re-valued or the dollar drops significantly. Dell should be defensive. Commodity operations have no staying power - and they don't help the nation defend our economic interests. They are a great investment and a very reliable firm for Wall Street, but they are not a significant player in any sense. Lenovo, HP, Gateway, any of these guys could pick up their slack if they were dissolved tomorrow, and no one in any market would care.

But you make a good point. For all that Windows touts backwards compatibility, Apple is in some ways better. On the other hand, I have the latest Mac OSX and it won't even recognize my old Starcraft discs.

It only really matters on the business end, and Windows' history has been so much more stable. Give Apple another 10 years and if they don't screw up, they'll be popular here. But Linux will gain overseas, as bad as it is, there's nothing that's more backwards compatible. You can run and re-compile anything from OTHER DECADES on Linux.

Technically, Apple has this same advantage for server applications, but I doubt they'll ever put together a competent, well supported program for businesses. They're too distracted with high-end consumers. That's why I've always thought they should acquire Sun, ditch Solaris, integrate/open source Java. But Sun's CEO is too stubborn for this to happen prior to bankruptcy.

Exactly, the manufacturers choose Windows, but that's because everyone wants it. The larger picture is that Windows DOESN'T NEED a new consumer release. Everyone's excited about x360, ps3, and their RAZR. After we got online with Win95, no consumer really cares much what they're running. If they don't need to purchse antivirus with Vista (ha) great. Other than that, no one cares. They could probably sell XP 5 years from now.

The delay is bad because for MS because it kills their manufacturing partners and their fanboys with the gaming rigs. But they honestly should make their own OSX, because of their monopoly in business, they really DO have the time.

    2. It's free. Didn't anyone mention that?
    3. Yes, OO is slavishly copying MS Office's features. That's a good thing! I know those features are actually there. I have no guarantees with other alternative apps like abiword or whatever, and I have to hunt through hundreds of websites to figure out what else I can use. The time already invested in OO.org and MS Office has got to be enough. No more learning new names, websites, methods, UIs. Nope. Let's everyone just stick with and improve OO.org. If you like, negotiate to fold Gnumeric into Calc, I don't care. These other programs have zero chance of succeeding in the marketplace.
    4. I also can't answer whether OO.org needs a re-write. But it's good enough that my wife and my parents can use it (at least as much as they can use MS Office). And no one owns 64bit chips yet, so who cares? I'm talking worldwide, of course. Anyone who currently has a 64 bit chip already has an old 32 bit chip computer and/or the money to get one.

See? OO.org and the alternatives are for people who can't/won't pay. As a free gift, it's silly to whine about it's pedigree.

XML, etc. is good enough for the long-term. Oh, everyone is making hay on video, and that seems to be working fine without new web standards and langauges. Considering the bleeding edge for 90% of the internet is a website like ESPN, it will be a while before that potential is tapped out.

As for MS propaganda, they've just made too many enemies. They won't be able to achieve huge market share in any new markets, the word got out about 10 years ago that they'll bleed you dry. No more monopolies.

Also, why does Blizzard always provide Macintosh versions, but Sid's games don't? They should have broader appeal, not lesser.

Why isn't the original civilation being sold on every platform like Tetris? This is beyond me - now I'm talking about Gameboy, cell phones, PDAs, PSP, etc. That's all I want. 15. Democracy and freedom on New York Times sues DoD over Domestic Spying · · Score: 1

Don't confuse the two. These wiretaps aren't being used by the administration directly, as with that cheater Nixon. There's a reason we voted for these guys, even if 'we' doesn't include Slashdot or the NYT. We're getting democracy, there are still 500+ representatives on Congress who could have stopped this in the last decade, if we had voted that way.

As for freedom, there should always be a balance. We're on of the free-est societies in history. We can't get arrested for no reason, as in the UK, and we don't have judges arbitrarily ruling cases, as in France, and we don't have a legislature that can overrule the constitution at any time - as in virtually every other democracy.

We whine about wiretaps, and that's healthy. But this is still just whining while we're at war. Our vaunted forefathers did much worse (Lincoln, FDR, Wilson). The things you can get away with in this country under the guise of freedom is more than enough.

I agree the rules can't just be ignored, but this process for monitoring for national security is a huge gray area. A lot of people have gotten into the habit of calling everyone they don't agree with liars and crooks - when they have no evidence. NYT is one of them.

Today, ESPN buys space from Sprint, tomorrow, that won't even be necessary.

You can't just say you do a good job, when you have no data. I think by now, most people go to slashdot for the comments, rather than the articles. So traffic isn't sufficient feedback to think you're successful at your own particular job. Just an option to rate articles, the ability to sort on perfect '5' articles by date, that would be all it takes.

I know it would take a bit of work on your part, and I appreciate what you do already, but rating articles makes a lot more sense than the categories. Though I do like that I can't see all your Left Coast loony articles whining about Bush. I mean, I like being able to block your 'politics' section and I don't want that to go away.
