First-Party PS3 Titles Announced
Gamasutra reports on a list of first-party titles that will see launch with the PlayStation 3. From the article: "The specifically listed games are Polyphony Digital's latest Gran Turismo iteration, Genji 2, presumably a sequel to Yoshiki Okamoto's samurai action title for the PlayStation 2, Everybody's Golf 5, the latest in Camelot's popular cartoon golf series, and titles named Monster Carnival, Angel Rings and The Eye Of Judgment. No other information is currently available on the games."
when those 4,000 devkits shipped out? If it was recently, we're obviously not going to see a springtime release.
wake me up when they release something original.
with the exception of MGS4, i haven't seen a single interesting title pop up for it yet. (and i'm only interested in MGS4 because i've played the previous ones, not looking for groundbreaking gameplay...) i miss the dreamcast days, where for every FPS, we got a space channel 5 or a rez. hell, i had more fun playing D2 than the 360 titles i got at launch.
oh well, back to darwinia.
The Sony PS3 event is only a few weeks away now. That will be the official starting gun for the next gen console race between Sony and Nintendo.
The 360 is effectively dead and no longer relevant. Microsoft funded projects will continue on in development of course, but we are going to see publishers quietly trimming back 360 ports. Mostly in Japan, but over the next few months in the US too. Microsoft would be in bad shape even if they didn't have the hardware and manufacturing defects that is holding up shipments of new consoles on store shelves. But it sounds like the hardware problems are going to persist well into the middle of 2006 which pretty much is the final nail in the 360's coffin.
The amount of support the Revolution is getting is amazing. Developers are going nuts over ideas for the new controller. Sony looks like they are going to be head to head with Nintendo in Japan. And if the Rev is cheap enough, will probably be the highest selling 'second console' ever for people in the US and Europe.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sony doesn't easily top the PS2 in worldwide installed base numbers with the PS3. The PS2 looks like it is on track to hit 120+ million as it winds down its life over the next couple of years. Sony is stronger than ever with even more developer support than with the PS2 and 140-150 million PS3s over the next five years sounds like a reasonable lifetime installed base for the console.
The early reports on the first PS3 games are glowing from people who have seen them firsthand. The PS3 event in a few weeks is going to something no gamer will want to miss.
And the porn industry is officially throwing their weight behind BluRay. RIP HD-DVD...
Much like my view of the PSP, whenever I see any news of the PS3 or XBox 360 I have the sudden urge to yawn. I guess my dissatisfaction with the last generation is showing, but I owned all three consoles (each with several games bought for it each year) and the number of games I finished each year could be counted on one hand; the games all felt exactly like another game I had played and I became bored with them. The Nintendo DS is a blessing to the disaffected gamer, as I think I have had more fun in 4 months of owning it as I did owning the XBox or PS2 for 3-5 years. The Revolution interests me simply because of the Nintendo DS; if it is as good it could reignite my interest in Console gaming again.
Hopefully they will have had enough time to figure out how to code in a way that takes full advantage of the Cell. If all that we get is the equivilant of PS2 games with shinier graphics, then who really cares?
The Cell processor is highly centered around multithreading design and performance. To take full advantage of it will require extremely complicated programs that are multithreaded in such a way to take advantage of all 8 cores. No one in the industry has truely conquered this task yet. Even on the 360, which is also a multi-core system, 99% of the games you're seeing only use 1 of it's cores, however I think Ghost Recon coming up uses a 2nd but only for minor things.
There's a good article on this topic called "The Free Lunch Is Over".
The real "revolution" for both the 360 and the PS3 won't come for a couple years most likely. As it will take developers time to learn the best ways to develop for the hardware. This has always been the case with consoles, however expect the growth potential of both the 360 and PS3 to be massive compared to previous generations.
Anyway, if you're expecing the PS3 to do anything beyond what you've seen on the 360, at least for the first couple years of it's life, you're in for a huge let down.
Go here for teh [sic] funny.
Wow, you're quite the idiot now aren't you.
The only thing clear from your ramblings are:
1) You've never touched a real life console devkit
2) You've never been inside a real life console devhouse - our even seen one most likely
3) You've never written or even seen real life console code
4) Just another random idiot parroting stuff he read from other random idiots on the Net about a topic you have absolutely no competence in.
Don't worry dummy, us smart folk actually working on PS3 development will handle 'teh scarry multi-threading and multi-cores' just fine just like we have with all the other multi-chip/concurrent systems we've been working on over the past twenty years.
Everyone knows that any self respecting Japanese launch line up does, by law, have to contain some sort of obscure and vaguely fetishistic dating game. So until I see mention of 'Go Go High School Love Game', I'm calling bullshit.
.. a couple of things.
1. This is an initial list only, who knows what will come out during the launch period.
2. This is probably going to be for the Japan release only, and is most likely not indicative of the North American launch lineup

Multi-threaded is not a good aproach for the Cell (although it is a perfectly acceptable method for the XBox 360).
The best approach for the Cell is a Batch-Controler paridgm. The main processor producess a bunch of small batches to be run on each of the 7 smaller spe processors; this is an approach used when programming for many DSPs. It is not a hard Paradigm to follow, and you get results quickly, the main problem arises when you try to design a program uses this Paradigm aswell as a Multi-threaded aproach.
Essentially, the core of Multi-platform game engines will have to be completely re-written to run on the PS3 in comparison to the XBox 360 and PC (with multi-core, multi-thread processors); this shouldn't be too much of a problem because the engine programming team is becoming a smaller and smaller portion of the development team (2-5 engine programmers compared to 20-100 artists).

Do you have a link to that price quote from Sony?
"Is Sausage bad for printers?"
Polyphony hasn't met a release date within 12 months since the first Gran Turismo. If they can make the PS3 launch, I'll eat my shoes. With some tabasco.

Are you stupid? Maybe some kids who only play sports games will buy the 360. Because that's all that I see on the Wal-Mart shelves. More bull-crap 50 dollar games that only have a couple months before they end up in the $20 bin.
Am I the only one who got sick of Halo? It's an over-rated FPS. Not to say that it isn't fun, but basically, it's the only thing that MS can promise Xbox 360 owners. Just wait a litte longer, kiddies, we'll give you more Halo!
I don't know where you got your facts, but the 360 isn't doing as well as Microsoft had hoped. They failed to meet the sales they thought they would, it is filled with bugs, and it is utterly failing in Japan. The fact is, we don't know how the console wars are going to turn out yet. Once the Revolution and the PS3 debut, we'll find out who's on top.
Too bad most market analysts wouldnt know their ass from a hole in the ground. Besides, Im sure Sony has their own market analysts. If their analysts tell Sony that pricing at $500 will be a disaster then Sony will price at $400. They have deep pockets and are more than willing to take significant losses to ensure market penetration.
The laws of probability forbid it!
Most middle-American families on a budget don't have 50 inch HDTVs. They'll buy a very cheap PS2 or a Revolution. They won't pay extra so that little Johnny can play with some basement living geeks online. They will see the same games cheaper on the PS2 or Xbox.
Despite your constant Xbox love, both the 360 and PS3 are expensive toys. At least with the PS3 we can get HD versions of movies (Sony Pictures) to watch. As pointless are UMDs seemed to be, people seem to be buying them, so I expect more folks will buy Blu Ray movies.
For a moment, I thought Genji 2 was a Gran Turismo spinoff. Not that it really matters, though, since the chances of GT5 coming out at launch are about the same as the chances of Jack Thompson leaving the bar and joining a death-metal band...

Everyone who thinks GT5 will be on schedule, raise your Sony ID badge in your right hand...
Sibling poster is correct that the parent poster is likely fradulent. The user is at best a rabid fanboy, but it looks more like he's using dual accounts to mod himself.
-- I have fans? Wow.
If their analysts tell Sony that pricing at $500 will be a disaster then Sony will price at $400. They have deep pockets and are more than willing to take significant losses to ensure market penetration.
ESPECIALLY when this is their chance to get blu-ray players in the homes of the masses. They can take an extra $100 loss on the console since they'll be raking in the licensing fees from blu-ray once it becomes the standard.
I think people underestimate what Sony's persistence will be in this release. There's more riding on the PS3 than just gaming.
I wonder how many launch titles the PS3 will have that don't end with a number? (excluding games that have numbers as an integral part of the name, such as Warhammer40000).
-==- Buy a Mac and leave me alone!
I'm starting to notice a trend with the computer guy nex spewing misinformation. If we look at the actual facts, and again, we already see that Sony---despite veiled references to the "value" of the PS3---is actually planning on releasing at the same prices they always have. Notice the price actually going down over time.
Don't make me laugh. The PSP already has a larger lineup than the 360, and just as much online play. And everyone considers the PSP to be lacking.
Don't think of it as a flame---it's more like an argument that does 3d6 fire damage
Wow. That was possibly the biggest pile poo I've seen yet on slashdot.
PS3 is lucky if it's out before Christmas 2006. And, we'll see retreaded games like Tekken 69 and Twisted Metal : Masturbation.
Sony is stronger than ever with even more ...
Whaaaa? Sony is bleeding money like crazy. PlayStation and Columbia Pictures are the only commodities they own that are profitable. If the PS3 fails (which it's exuberant price tag could make happen), Sony is done for. Pick up a newspaper now and then.
Sure, Windows PCs dominate the market. But so do cheap toupees.
The PS2 looks like it is on track to hit 120+ million as it winds down its life over the next couple of years.
120+ million?! Jeez, way to pull numbers out of your ass. I don't think ANY video game system has even come close to the 100 million mark (sans the Gameboy and all its upgrades and PCs which aren't dedicated game systems).
and 140-150 million PS3s over the next five years sounds like a reasonable lifetime installed base for the console.
140-150 million PS3s over 5 years? Holy shit! Thats an average of 28~30 million PS3s sold EACH YEAR. Will the PS3 surf the net, record TV shows, burn CDs/DVDs/Blu-Ray discs, cook my dinner, cure diseases, power my house, pay my bills and post on /. for me?
The early reports on the first PS3 games are glowing from people who have seen them firsthand.
What 'early reports'? Every single report I've heard about the PS3 has been muzzled by a NDA, reeked of hype or been so vague the Nintendo Revolution controller rumors sounded more likely.
And the porn industry is officially throwing their weight behind BluRay. RIP HD-DVD...
Says who? Between Sony's recent DRM fiasco and Microsoft's 'no DRM because we don't have a stake in it' decision making, most analysts generally agree that HD-DVD will be more likely to be adopted. (And lets not forget Sony's current attempts to force UMDs upon the handheld/portable market with their PSP.)
And what about the Revolution, which is going to be half the price of the 360, has free online play (Nintendo Wi-Fi Connect), and an even larger selection of games (virtual console can run NES, SNES, N64, and gamecube).
Pre-emptive threading is pretty shitty for X360 too. Context switches are expensive when you have half a million extra registers to stuff into real memory.
some people can bash on not-yet-existing/upcoming products from a competitor. Do you really think Sony's upcoming product can affect Microsoft's stock prices?
The problem with any new console is that the best games for it come out last, rather than first - by the time the developers can figure out how to really push the hardware in ways other than making the graphics better. Why not use all that computing resource to power a game with thousands of characters on the screen with each of their own AI? Only a game like that will really test the hardware's mettle. (and it could be more fun than the Doom nuts.wad) I'd say Sony is going to ream Japan with the PS3, but in the US and Europe.... all Microsoft have to do is release Halo 3 and get Bethesda to put Oblivion out at the same time. Should be an interesting fight.
READY.
