So then if MS only had say 15% of the market, then Apple wouldn't have made a win32 version of iTunes? Maybe, but MS made Office available for the Mac, didn't they?
At first I thought this post was meant to be funny (I actually laughed). Certainly, I and most/.ers are capable of doing this. But you can see by that post why Microsoft still has nothing to fear from Linux...even "user-friendly" Ubuntu.
"get the latest beta driver"??
"install by hand in text mode"??
"start sshd and do it remotely"??
You might as well ask the typical user to perform brain surgery on himself.
That may be true, but it may also work out the other way. "Food in your belly and a roof over your head" = happiness++. As long as people are happy, they normally don't challenge their gov't.
All I know about Ebola is what I read in The Hot Zone, but I thought the cause of transfer during the Reston, VA outbreak was unknown? The monkeys were all in separate cages.
Yeah that seems to be a popular tactic of the tyrannical leaders of certain third-world countries these days. Pass a law that gives said leader more power and blame the US for "forcing" him to do so.
When Blockbuster first came to my town (yes, a long time ago), they offered discounts for bringing in your membership card from the competing rental store (Alfalfa video) and letting them rip it up.
If you're in a virtual world where you commit a virtual crime, then you should face virtual punishment. If I steal something in real life, I'm not going to go to virtual jail. Just like if I steal a virtual object in a virtual world, I shouldn't go to REAL jail.
The thing that makes this instance more difficult is that the player went into the real world to make his virtual crime real-world profitable.
However, out here in the real world, there are other factors like binding contracts and ethical behavior. If he signed a real-world agreement before playing the game that prohibited such behavior, then he could face real-world consequences.
In conclusion, there is no conclusion, please move along.
And one more thing. I've never cheered when a stray missile/bullet killed innocent Iraqis or Afghans. I've always had sympathy while still believing the war is just. But perhaps I should be more like you and argue that the Arabs deserve it since they've bred these terrorists. How's that for hateful?
The bombers were really very considerate, if you think about it.
Great! Let's give these guys the Nobel Peace Prize then. You f***ing imbecile. They weren't considerate, they deliberately detonated the bombs during rush hour traffic, when the greatest volume of passengers would be present. Only through their own stupidity were there so few casualties.
Never fear though, originally terrorism was only about second or third priority at the G8, but guaranteed it is now first.
You sit there and say that it couldn't be Muslim extremists and then you go ahead and defend them just in case they are. Asshole.
I charge $40 as a temporary rate (going up to $50 in Sept)
Why wait until September? Go for it now. $50 still isn't that much, specially since it's just an hour here and there. My plumber charges me $95/hr. What makes his training any harder than PC repair...hmm...probably a supply/demand thing...forget the plumbing comparison....
What's the big deal about napalm? If your goal is to kill your enemy by the truckload...seems like a pretty effective tool.
Not sure what the story over the environment is but if it's just a few acres of trees destroyed, then I'm appalled at the logic: we kill scores of human beings (even if they are the enemy) and everyone is worried about the poor trees.
MASSIVE??? All he wants to do it implement something slightly more sophisticated than Post-It notes. How is that MASSIVE?? I'm tired of techies who have to define a friggin data dictionary and draw out their project in UML for such simple tasks as this one. An adhoc approach is perfectly acceptable for this kind of project.
I don't "get it". How does "not having anything in the first place" make it cheaper and easier? I'd guess that there would be no difference either way, and it might be a little easier to upgrade in the US if you have cable conduits all over the cities and wiring in the house for it.
It goes like this: say I (individual OR company) purchase a desktop PC for $2000. So if I keep that PC for 1 year, it has cost me $2000/yr. If I keep it for 2 yrs, the cost has dropped to $1000/yr and so on. If I replace that computer every year with a bleeding edge PC, it costs me $2000/yr.
But, if I replace that PC every 5 years, it only costs me $400/yr. Pretty simple logic, but I guess it needs to be spelled out.
And when you get into the million dollar networking equipment, companies hope for their investment to last even longer.
Of course Congress can't pass a law that goes against the Constitution, they'd need an Amendment for that.
When I said the court shouldn't make their own laws, I didn't expect anyone to take it literally. The court accomplishes the same thing through their rulings...normally referred to as "legislating from the bench".
What I'm saying, is either states should make their own laws prohibiting execution of minors (what you suggested) or the federal gov't should pass a federal law prohibiting execution of minors.
Either way, it's for the lawmakers to decide, not 9 people.

Can anyone tell me how liberal became a derogatory term in the U.S. ?
The same way 'evangelical Christian' and 'neocon' came to mean extremist.
He said 'conservative', not 'Republican'. If you're going to stereotype, at least learn the difference between the two.
Personally, I believe the most conservative party is the Libertarian Party and the most liberal party is the Green Party.

dd if=/dev/urandom of=bigfile #this will create a file filling all empty space
you shouldn't have to do this if your filesystem is ext3...which I suspect that it is.

It's news. Had it been an American, the article would have said so. Not to mention, the article is hosted on hindu.com

As Mark Twain once said, "There are lies, damn lies, and statistics."
This quote actually belongs to Benjamin Disraeli
If Japan was so eager to surrender, why did they still refuse after Hiroshima? Put down the Japanese textbook and come back to reality.
Our universities (if they're still relevant, and haven't been shut down by the evangelical right-wing)
WTF?
MS have big offices in Europe employing European staff etc. if MS did pull out these offices etc would likely be split of become MS Europe.
And what would this "MS Europe" sell? Leftover office equipment? MS US would still retain the rights to their software.
Perhaps Slashdot needs an "Anime" section, so people like you could filter such stories out completely
:)
That's a good idea. Hoshino Aya? Yuya? It's like you're talking in another language or something
blue lasers, linux, real player...um, wait, scratch that last one...
In other words, MMORPG players are spending 4x as much time online as non-gamers.
Normal User: 10-15hrs
MMPORG User: 10-15hrs + 20-25hrs
If we're using the low end of the scale:
Normal User: 10hrs
MMPORG User: 10+20=30hrs
That's 3x the internet usage
If we're using the high end of the scale:
Normal User: 15hrs
MMPORG User: 15+25=40hrs
Again, that's 3x the internet usage.
