All it takes is a nip round to your neighbour's placeUh, which neighbor? There are half a dozen wireless accesspoints visible from my house (most using WEP). How am I supposed to know which house the unencrypted signal is coming from? For a short while I did connect to one of my neighbors' access points; to this day I have no idea which neighbor it was!
Argument against: people outside the cafe can probably access the free WiFi as well
Argument for: The control systems and maintenance required to make sure people are paying for their WiFi connection probably cost more than any additional revenue you can get from it. I know if I had a laptop, I'd keep looking until I found a place with open access, just to avoid the hassle.
Why not get your own male android? At least he won't make you sleep in the wet spot! And I'm sure the android makers could overcome other male "deficiencies" as well... imagine a hunky male humanoid that hates sports!
A really, really big condom over the booster tank?
But seriously, gee, what are the chances that tying a fricking net to the outside of a rocket would increase the aerodynamic drag? What are the chances that pieces of netting wouldn't damage the shuttle? Come on guys, this isn't rocket science... oh wait...
The shuttle as currently configured is simply a bad design. If they had just put the booster tank behind the shuttle like every previous rocket, instead of beside the shuttle, then it wouldn't matter what fell off the booster -- it couldn't possible strike the shuttle! I've been told the shuttle was originally designed to be launched off the back of another aircraft at a high enough altitude that it wouldn't need the booster. If this is true, then the booster itself is a last-minute kluge -- no wonder it doesn't work properly!
1) Build billion dollar fabs in places most likely to be bombed (e.g. Israel, Dublin, London)
2) Wait for attack
3) Collect billion dollar insurance settlements
4) Profit!
The United States already hires engineers and scientists from all over the world. If Asia trains more engineers and scientists, the United States will just hire more Asian engineers and scientists. What's the problem?
Spend an extra $100 for this and get digital out. What, you think they should charge everybody extra money for something only 1% of their customers will ever use?
Apple's limited by the chips they are able to buy in that regard, and the fact that they aren't able to bump up the speeds speaks volumes as to why they're switching to Intel. The fact that they are not able to bump of the speed of the Mac Mini might speak volumes more about the Mini chassis' ability to disipate heat.
The reason is that communication through machines (1's and 0's) is within clear and visible reach for regulation, unlike... a telephone conversation that ULTIMATELY is a lot more private and is voice data. You are aware, aren't you, that almost every telephone conversation is converted by a switch into digital (1's and 0's) for routing through most of the network, then converted back into analog at the other end? Sorry, but telephone conversations are 1's and 0's too, for the most part.
Absolutely! Those fascist laws against my killing someone who is just asking for it should be abolished! The government is infringing on my right to bitch-slap anybody that pisses me off!
While I agree that fewer laws would be better for society, I can't agree with your statement that "it MUST be possible for people to do things that are against the law". If people do things that harm other people, they should be punished in proportion to the harm done and the probability of getting caught. If nobody is harmed by the action, then there should be no law against it. I simply can't condone any action that harms another human being. As a philisophical ideal I personally beleive that people have a right to harm themselves, therefore there should have been no law against using Orkut to conduct this business in the first place. Well meaning others may disagree about the right to harm oneself, and therefore feel selling drugs should rightfully be illegal.
And what are the limits of criminal liability in a case like this? Gee, I don't know... what are the limits of liability for the phone companies, postal server, or the package delivery companies if they are used by drug distributors? I beleive the answer is "no liability whatsoever". Why do people think that everything is different if it's done on a computer?
Which of course is the real problem: selective enforcement. If there are too many laws, and they are not equally applied, then they become a tool for those in power to use for bullying their enemies, or even for silencing any who would dare to criticize them. On principle, they should have either locked up the Home Secretary or taken the law off the books. I guess I'm an idealist, but doing neither just proves the government is corrupt. (As is the US and many other governments.) Bloody hypocrites!
It's a good thing we won WWII, otherwise we'd all be living under fascist governments now... oh wait... uh, well, at least it's a good thing we won WWII, otherwise we'd all be speaking german now!
Cool. Let's send encrypted files to every member of congress/parliment, then turn each of them in as terrorists! The obvious flaw in this law is simple: you can go to jail for not providing the key even if you never had the key to provide in the first place!
Does anybody have a script for creating hundreds of AIM logins, then adding me to the buddy list of each one? I can be the most popular guy on the internet! Muahahahaha!
Don't most repeaters still identify themselves in Morse code? I don't think being able to send Morse is a usefull skill, since it is so easy to get a PC to do it for you. But being able to parse the Morse code you are hearing is still a usefull skill.
You forgot the "if you're willing to invest the time and effort to produce a solution" qualifier. If you're willing to shell out several million for a Windows source license (yes Virginia, they do exist), I'm sure Microsoft will let you modify the kernel. Just don't expect any help from them! Like most things, this is several orders of magnitude easier to do with Linux, but probably not impossible with Windows.
First off, the SIMS has a rating of Teen. Not Everyone/Teen. No such rating exists. Gee, where would I get such an idea. Go to http://thesims.ea.com/index_flash.php It says "Products range from Everyone to Teen". Blame EA, not me... that's the rating they put on their web page!
Funny, this web site still defines it as GMT (which is the same thing as Zulu, UT, UTC, or WET). Of course, that is probably a British site... bloody Brits with their antiquated way of doing things!

Damn straight! And if they didn't want me wandering into their living room, they would have locked their front door!
Damn! He was talking about fruits, not computers!
Offer free WiFi but put meters on the electrical outlets. That limits customers to the battery life of their laptops, generally a couple hours.

Why would anybody put so much work into this? Does Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro really have that big a problem finding a date?

It's too bad Jackie Gleason isn't still around, otherwise he could finally make good on his "To the moon, Alice, to the moon!" threat.
