For Windows I run PC tools AV (also their firewall, both free [beer]). Both Have worked pretty well for me and are both pretty detailed when you want and not terribly annoying.
They also have a spyware tool for one source security, but it costs money so I haven't tried it.
The point I'd presume is to give incentive to students and aspiring designers to see that there's still a lot of room for efficiency even with all the effort for it that are in current models, and also to gain interest in it. I'm guessing combustion efficiency isn't a popular major.

Not to mention that the air conditioning becomes more efficient when there is greater airflow over the condenser (at vehicle speeds at least).
