. If you wait 9-12 months the 'new release' movies go to gallery. I can rent, for a week, three gallery movies @ 3 dollars.
Dude, have you even looked at Netflix pricing? You can get unlimited rentals per month (2 movies at a time) for $13.99/month and you can EASILY get first run new releases. I used to be into the Blockbuster thing, but the newer titles were never in stock, and I hated having to wait in line to check in/out movies. Netflix ships them to you and you ship them back. I can send movies back on Wednesday and have new ones by Friday, and I don't have to wait 9-12 months for new releases.
I know the article's about the "download" service, but if you're going to compare it to the mom&pop video store, you should be comparing to the "standard" Netflix options, which I'm sorry, destroys video stores IMO.
This got modded Funny, but it brings up a valid point. Isn't this "story" just talking about having something like, oh I don't know, GRUB installed and then a lightweight Linux distro (like Xubuntu, DSL-N, or Zenwalk)? It just seems like they're describing something that's neither news, nor particularly unique. Hell, the article even states that this "Splashtop" is based on Linux.
The device doesn't do straight voice-to-voice translations but for example in the police departments multi-lingual officers translate and record standard issue police commands, such as the Miranda rights, and other questions, that beat officers can retrieve and broadcast by a simple English-language text or voice word search.
WTF?? That sentence made my head hurt. What was there a shortage on punctuation marks or something?
on Tuesday when a driver attempting to steer his vehicle to the right was involuntarily taken to the left. As a result the rear wagon of the train jumped the rails and collided with another passing tram
IANATE (I Am Not A Tram Expert), but if it was on RAILS, how or why would you STEER it?
But the school administrator is not a LEGALLY authorized authority for dealing with these "crimes
True, but the administrator isn't pursuing LEGAL action. The school is "punishing" the "offenders" by stripping them of PRIVILEGES (i.e. membership on various teams, clubs, committees, etc) and that makes this absolutely within their right. If exclusion from those various memberships causes the students problems with scholarships, that is not the fault or the problem of the school administrators, it is the result of poor judgment on the part of the students. Welcome to life, kids. Life has many opportunities to make choices and then deal with the consequences. Get used to it.
the fact that this guy did things half-assed. His original script had a bug in it(not tested)...
Not only that, the loser had the "D Day" set to his own birthday. I'm not condoning or defending this type of thing, but if you're going to do it, do it well and for crying out loud, don't leave a trail of friggin' bread crumbs leading right to you.
I guess it was a poor attempt at humor. I was agreeing with the GP that there was nothing Ironic about it at all and was trying to call attention to it by citing an ironically not ironic song. Geez, now my head hurts too. Maybe I have an iron deficiency, that would be ironic.....GAAHHHH!!
In most corporate environments, that is precisely how you get ahead. Playing "nice" ensures that you will always be the underling. Why? Because you are so easy to get along with, anyone can task and work with you. This can and does keep people from getting promoted.
Choosing to be flexible is very different than "playing nice" as you say. But, since you brought it up, you'll find success much more obtainable if you generally "play nice" and choose your battles wisely. If you choose to have a difficult and inflexible attitude all the time, no one will pay any attention when you resist something that you really need to be resisting (kind of a 'boy who cried wolf' situation). In other words, if you come in the room already dialed up to "10", where can you go from there?
Here here. I also agree. It got me thinking though, and perhaps this is a topic for an "Ask Slashdot" (or perhaps it's even been covered before), but what sources to most Slashdotters use for news? Are there particular RSS feeds, or news sites that a lot of us like more/less than others? If so, what do we all like/dislike about each?
Personally, I like a broad range of information sources (including various political leanings) as there's never going to be any source that is completely without bias of any kind, so I'd rather sample many sources, and sift what seem to be the common principles. I'm always interested in new perspectives, and wondered if anyone had any particular recommendations. I'll start off by recommending Netvibes as an aggregator that I love. I like that I can sign in from any computer and have my personalized feeds/pages in the same format whenever I want, and that I can add whatever feeds I like.
is the system easy to use? I mentioned to someone in an earlier post that I recommend Thingamablog if you haven't already tried it. It's very easy, quick, small, all good things.
For many of us maintaining our own boxes, adding a record to DNS is much simpler than installing (and maintaining) another web application. Some blogger apps are pretty trivial, but they still require database setup and maintenance. Not disagreeing with you here, but a suggestion if I may. Have you considered Thingamablog? It is VERY easy to set up and maintain. I, like you, maintain my own box but didn't want the hassle of having to set up and administer various other functions (MySQL, Python, etc) so I gave Thingamablog a shot as an experiment. I have to say, I'm quite satisfied with it.
The only problem with diesel is that it goes bad after a while. There's fuel polishing to address things like that. Your fuel supplier should be able to perform this service for you as needed (or on a scheduled basis) if you don't put the systems in place from the start. Also, proper monitoring of the fuel in your tank(s) can keep track of moisture/contaminant content.
Amen brother. I'm married, kids, and a tech job where I maintain a vital piece of equipment. Never owned a cell phone. Ok, I'll bite...how vital is this piece of equipment if you aren't required to carry a cell phone (and yes, I mean required, not expected)? Look, I'm not making the argument that everyone must have a cell phone nor that everyone who has one uses it for important needs, but to make the case that they're never or rarely needed is really a little short sighted.
Well that's just bizarre, then, because I don't have a cell phone, and seem to function just fine Well, ok, so it's not a 'necessity' in the sense that you need it to survive, but to make the argument that you can't afford it and see absolutely no value in it all the while posting to Slashdot (via a computer with internet access, neither of which are free) seems a little contradictory.
The record company EMI was behind the first commercially viable CT scanner, which was invented by Sir Godfrey Newbold Hounsfield in Hayes, United Kingdom at the company's laboratories and unveiled in 1972.
Fabulous, now I have to pay the RIAA royalty fees on my CT Scans too? I'm not sure if my PPO is gonna cover that.
No, it's not. If I had reached an agreement with Google beforehand that I would pay them for referrals to my site THEN I would have to pay them. Similarly to the 'Links' page on my site where I refer people to various vendors (Amazon, etc) I get revenue if they buy when referred through my site. Pretty basic E-Commerce, actually. I'm saying it wouldn't be entirely out of the question if it is an option for companies to become the "I'm Feeling Lucky" result for a keyword(s).
Agreed. One also has to wonder, does Google get any "referrer" revenue from any sales generated by the "I'm Feeling Lucky" links. It wouldn't be completely unreasonable to think that if a user gets to a company's website via the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button that the company might pay Google a small fee/commission.

I finally got First Post on an article! Woohooo!!

Yeah, Adventure was cool, but it had nothing on Global Thermonuclear War.
This might be what gave him the idea in the first place.

**whoosh**

You know, it's like a black fly in your Chardonnay, or a death row pardon 2 minutes too late.
Geez, some people really have to have it spelled out for them.

Or the Vogons might care if our radio blasts are screwing up their satellite reception of the latest Pay Per View special of some poetry reading.

Hmmmm....you mean like StumbleUpon?
