Let me reword my question. If I install Linux (whichever distribution) and then go to /usr/src/linux and type in "make", will the resulting vmlinux (or vmlinuz) be identical to the kernel that I'm running right now? I don't think so. It will be different. My network adapter probably won't be recognized because it's not the "default".

because we know that the credit card company is giving us the card in exchange for a nice interest rate

I buy as much as possible with my credit card, because the CC company gives me frequent flyer miles for every purchase. Because of that, I only have to pay for half the flights I take every year. And since I pay my bill in full every month, the interest rate is irrelevant. Plus, I make more interest on my money, because it can be up to 7 weeks before I actually have to pay for the item I bought (if I buy something on the 1st of the month, the CC bill for that purchase won't be paid until the 3rd week of the following month). I'm also better protected if an item I purchase is defective. On top of that, since I don't carry a lot of cash, I don't pay as many ATM fees for withdrawing cash, and if I ever get mugged, I won't have as much cash to lose.

  11. The Power Of Slashdot on TiVo Response to 2.0.1 Upgrade Issues · · Score: 3
People have been complaining about these problems on the TiVo forums (which TiVo employees monitor) for many months. There are dozens of threads with hundreds of messages talking about this stuff. In all that time, no one from TiVo has ever really addressed the issue, certainly not to say anything like, "we made a mistake."

One day after Slashdot mentions it, we get an official response with the phrase, "we never had any intention of trying to diminish the value of an existing box without the TiVo service, or of annoying those of you who use the box this way in order to push you into becoming paying subscribers." WTF!?!?! This is totally new information. Every TiVo user on the forum was under the impression that TiVo did not care about non-subscribers, since these people actually cost TiVo money.

The whole "official response" is fully of language that completely contradicts every earlier post in the forum. Granted, almost all of those posts were from people who are not TiVo employees, but it's still amazing.

What upsets me (and probably every other forum reader) the most is that it took so long from this information to come out. This official response should have come out six months ago.

    • If you add $250 to your budget, you'll have a lifetime subscription and all of these issues will be moot.
    • TiVo generally has more features and is easier to use than Replay. If you browse the user forums for both devices, you'll see that Replay users ask for new features and changes much more than TiVo users do.
I bought a 60-hour TiVo from Phillips, and although I did spend a lot ($750 including subscription), the device is amazing. The software works great, it has lots of features (2.0 is way better than 1.3 in my opinion), and it's totally changed the way I watch TV (for the better, obviously).

I used to have serious back pain problems. They all went away by doing the following:
    • sleeping only on my back, not on my stomach. Sleeping on your stomach causes your spine to bend backwards, which is really bad. Sleeping on the side isn't any better, but I never did that anyway.
    • taking calcium suppliments. This is also good for minor joint and muscle pains.
    • exercising. I recommend a Bowflex. It's expensive, but it's the only exercise machine I've liked.

Isn't it the kids' right to prefer a good and tasty steak over a nice physical appearance?

No, it isn't. Parents are responsible for the well-being of their children, so the parents dictate what the children can and cannot eat. If the parents say that the children should eat healthy (and any parent who doesn't is unfit to be a parent), then the children should eat healthy.

Ok, so kids will now go to the Mac Donalds next door rather than eating at the canteen, and this system will have achieved the exact opposite from what was intended.

Not at all. The parents will know that the children are not eating at school, and can take appropriate action (i.e. punishment).

So why doesn't somecreate a generic API that lets you create icons, etc on the whatever desktop you happen to be running? I've installed dozens of apps via RPM, and I had to make icons for all of them. Not only that, but I've had to dig up icons to use.
