Context sensitive help is sooo helpful (when dealing with a ton of different classes and methods, context sensitive help makes it easier to remember names and stuff. It also helps to dramatically reduce the number of syntax errors that you make, by showing what you can and can't use.)

I for one will accept the desktop search with open arms because I for one am having trouble keeping track of my files because I have too much data. The directory tree structure is a good organizational tool for keeping track of a small to medium number of files, but for large sets of files, it becomes cumbersome, and inefficient (For example, what if Google was organized in a giant directory tree structure? tell me which is the more efficient search mechanism). I personally have in my "MyDocuments" folder: 14Gb of files (and just for the skeptics, no, I store my music/videos in another separate folder on another computer) stored in over 3,000 folders, and although I am good at organizing my files, I can really feel that I have hit the limit of what a traditional directory tree structure can handle (vs. what the brain can handle). Unless of course there is a better solution out there for people like me who have thousands of files....

Well of course a recent release of Linux will always blow away a Windows 98 machine in terms of reliability. If you compared it against Windows XP (remember Windows 98 is over 7 years old!) you would see that XP is just as stable, and is a lot more easier to set up and maintain than Linux. Remember in the long run it is the administrative costs that will outweigh the hardware/software costs. And for that, Windows has a much lower administrative cost.

  15. Re:Untrue. on Can Microsoft Beat Google? · · Score: 1

It's Microsoft's strategy, beat people with marketing to get them to use their product, then once they have/own the market, then maybe you will have time to "improve" the product. They did this with Windows vs Linux, with Office vs Word Perfect, with IE vs Netscape, and now they are doing it with MSN search vs Google. In all these cases, they may not have had the "Best" product, but they spent enough on marketing to make people switch to it.

  16. Re:Mice on Why Apple Makes a One-Button Mouse · · Score: 1

It's not an Interface issue, it's a user issue as to whether they can handle more than one button. I believe that User Interface designs that exploit the fact that most Windows people have at a 2 or more button mouse is essential. By designing a program to be able to USE 2+ buttons will in general dramatically increase the efficiency of the user. Ok, abit at the expense of the user and the learning curve. But, for example, take photoshop, the learning curve is steep, but once you have learned it, you will swear it's the best thing to use, and easy to do what you need to do. It's like high speed interet, the beginners only need dialup, but once you get better, you switch to high speed, and you will never go back. Once you know how to use 2 buttons, you will never like 1 button mice. The key to designing programs is to make sure that they allow expansion, and for people to upgrade. But NOT to automatically go to the lowest common denominator to try and satisfy them (would you be willing to be stuck with dialup for eternity, because that's "all" we need?) I personally LOVE my Logitech MX 500 (8 clickable buttons + scroll wheel), and the ability to use, and individually program, all those buttons dramatically increases my efficiency. If a program could properly handle 4, or 5 buttons, then I will love them.
