Infact I do indeed yearn for the day when I finally listen to, 'Dead Cat Powered Music on the Go!'(c).
Imagine the possibilities, you're walking down the street listening to your iPod, when alas, the low battery warning indicator flashes menacingly at you! Is this the end of your mobile musical enjoyment!?!? Fear not because after a quick momentary glance around you spy that most commonly found and abundant source of energy, a dead cat! Simply deposit said energy source into the easily carried 'Kitty Incineratorizor Backpack'(c) and enjoy whole minutes of continued playback!
Now in the immortal words of Homer Simpson...
OOoooo! Look at me Marge! I'm making people happy! I'm the magical man from happy land, in a gumdrop house on lollipop lane!
Homer: Oh Lisa! There's no record of a hurricane ever hitting Springfield.
Lisa: Yes, but the records only go back to 1978 when the Hall of Records was mysteriously blown away!
I doubt it due to atmospheric diffusion. Now if you put a few variants of these up in a geostationary orbit they could 'pick off' LEO sattelites as the pass underneath. However the solar panels needed to power them would also make a fairly large target...
Probably more usefull than laser mounted sharks though.
What if that one chunk hadn't fallen off right in view of the camera?
The return-to-flight mission would have been declared an outstanding success. Regular launches would have resumed. We would be back on track again.
Sorry I probably should have expanded on that statement. I think I was trying to make a point of how using the word disruptive infers that this could be some kind of threat or challenge to the established space agencys, and that is a worrying thing. Personally I don't think innovation and experimentation should ever be considered a threat. It may well be disruptive to some government agencys (who currently enjoy a monopoly on space exploration), but to the human race developments in space technology may well prove essential.
Having said that, I must've been sleeping in business studies when they covered the real term 'distruptive technology'. I read it as disruptive; characterized by unrest or disorder or insubordination. So ignore this and mod ^that^ guy up!
Dissagree, you've got to know when to cut your losses (Nasa, ahem). If the design is flawed why stick with it trying to iron out the kinks of a flawed design. Better to admit you got that one wrong and have a bash at something else.
Russia scrapped the Buran due to increasing cost. They departed from the use of a heat shield in the shuttle sense. They now use an ablative heat shield which has never failed.
Couldn't help notice the parallel this story draws in comparison to the new terror laws the British government is proposing post the terror attack's. Do you relinquish editorial/civil liberties to combat terrorism? I don't think so, the fact that anyone can edit the wiki and the fact that we live in a free country where everyone is equal is what makes these things great.
You've got to look at the perpetrator and his/her motivation. In the case of terrorism you have frustrated individuals who want to bring about change. Do you frustrate these individuals further by driving them further underground and punish the rest of society by eroding human rights and civil liberties? I wouldn't of thought so, but the Governments of the world are surely much wiser than I.
In the case of the Wiki you have individuals who abuse the nature of the system because they're idiots and because they can. If you lock pages they will most likely vandalise unlocked pages or find other ways to cause trouble and so forth. The revolutionary thing about the Wiki is it's constant evolution anything else and it becomes a regular encyclopedia.
Personally I'm willing to put up with seeing a picture of the emperor in place of the pope for a few minutes.
Yes, However those suits were only required to protect for a duration of hours. Im not even sure there was any extensive shielding other than the material the suits were made from? Anyway the problem arise's from the fact a Mars mission would likely invole months if not years. That's a lot of accumulative radiation.

Oh by the way, I was being sarcastic
[slams door]
I'd just like to point out that stealing music at the store and copyright infringment is not the same thing.
Meh, either will suffice. :P
when will I be able to buy a cat powered mp3 player?
Homer: OK, Start the presses.
Editor: That takes four hours...
Homer: Whatever, I'll be at Moe's.
*gasp* "He's a mad man... A maaaad maaaan!"
Shouldn't this be modded informative. Jees, millions of voices probably were suddenly silenced!
2. ????
3. Profit!

130 year old porn... no thanks!
"This is an ongoing, organized attempt to siphon off information from our unclassified systems."
Great propaganda though.
Did anyone else read that as, 'Laser Cannons Coming to a Shark Near You' ?
Oh wait this is slashdot...
Probably more usefull than laser mounted sharks though.

Until the next Shuttle vapourised...
If I can't see it , it can't hurt me!
Great work guys. However, I propose a new test, in the interest of science of course, with erotic images!
Lower prices?
I also can't see a problem RFID'ing papers. The only problem is, were screwed when the gov makes it a requirement to carry papers at all times...

A concise explanation of shock diamonds(mach diamonds) here.
Its strange how positive experimentation such as this is dubbed distruptive.

BTW, what the heck is snuff?
