I couldn't live without being able to transfer money in my back accounts, send email, etc. You don't have to spend $500 to get that stuff. The iPhone is actually inferior to most phones out there (except for the display size)... most people just buy it because they think it makes them look cool or, ironically, anti-establishment. Apple is very good at marketing to that susceptible demographic.
Just get a different, better phone. Your making the apple i-fanboys angry:)
Imagine the value of an asset like the trademark of Disney or the copyright for Mickey(which will never expire as the time keeps extending) If valuers think that the "value" of the all Mickey products that could be on the market and how much would people pay and how strong the desire is to make Mickey clones, he might put it at $1Bn. So thats 300mil in tax. Then we got Goofey, Donald, Bambi, Simba, and the list goes on and on with the biggest of all being Winnie the Pooh... All of these copyrights could cost millions per year to hold onto as their value goes up.
Hopefully at some point the cost of keeping them becomes more than the loss of releasing them to the public domain and we all benefit.
I always wanted to say that. But you are right. How many universities all over the world have whole classes that are essentially Adobe product training....like:
"Creative Imaging, VT2500" (photoshop)
"Creative Illustration, VT2600" (illustrator)
"Interactive Multimedia, VT3100" (flash)
and I could go on and on. Adobe, Microsoft, Apple, the list is long...These companies have made products that WE ALL have used to our benefit and have generated wealth for WAY more people than just the producers.
This was a bit long to quote but how many universities that teach computer science have whole units devoted to linux. Introduction to Programming Environments 152 Systems Programming Design Computer Communications 352
That's 3 units you take which are basically pure Unix, and then every unit except software engineering uses Linux in the Labs (at the Uni I went to).
And seriously stop confusing wealth redistribution IE gambling, taxation with wealth creation, raw materials -> product. Taking bricks and mortar and building a house and selling it for more than the inputs is wealth creation.
Engineering is efficiency. We don't typically have the luxury of overdesign. If you are told to build a mine to last 5 years and it lasts 17, the valuable ore would have been depleted long ago and the owner will complain that he paid too much because you overdesigned everything.
1. Whats with all the Princess Bride jokes? 2. How much has the US spent on Iraq? 3. The MPAA and RIAA overlords dont want you to have fast intertubes. 4. The government is just a puppet stage for our enjoyment so we don't notice our civil liberties and tax dollars washed away. 5. Having the fastest internet in the world should really be a goal of the nation that likes to be at the forefront of everything. Its e-peen at least.
Local lawyers have already found a workaround for this obstacle. They first open a criminal case and receive the identity information from the police. Later they file the civil case. Surely the police wont be happy that their resources are being used in a fraudulent manner. Its unlikely that such a dubious relationship will continue unabated.
As far as I am aware the RIAA gets to keep the meat from its kills, and doesnt give any back to the record labels. If the costs go up it will be the RIAA who will go hungry not the labels.
The labels might see that the RIAA is losing its effectiveness and form a new super cartel and find new ways of extorting money from copyright infringers. Like associating p2p with child porn.
No, if the RIAA thinks that you have a case, they will drop theirs. Precisely because they don't want to set a precedent that their methods are bullshit and constitute criminal harassment on a massive scale. So if they drop every case they will lose, and fight the few they can win, they set a precedent that what they are doing is right and the courts support them. And in the mean time they send thousands more letters asking people for a few grand to continue the fight or they will be next. Paying up doesn't even grant you immunity from future suits.
So many comments clearly have no idea about what the article is about. THere will be no genome mixing... No manbearpigs, no gumans, hardvarks or even polar bumans. Just trying to turn random human cells into stem cells by using animal eggs without their DNA... Then if it works they terminate the experiment and try again:)
If they didn't cancel the experiment, you get a human clone. No animal hybrids.
I thought it was like in the movies where they just drink out of plastic bags with straws in them? Or they just shoot the water/beverage into the air and then proceed to drink from the suspended sphere.:)
Dexter is probably the example that they are talking about. In Australia, Dexter season 1 has just started on PayTV. But everybody knows about it because the pirates have all downloaded it and told all their friends about it. Dexter Season 1 and 2 both had the Pre Air first 2 episodes "leaked" online months before the seasons started, now I guess that was just to get people talking.
If everybody could destroy 1% of their money (including the banks writing off their loans in the same proportion) every year for 100 years, with super-fine granularity then a $20000 salary would change to $2000 after some time but a $2000 item would also cost only $200 so no loss there:) Seriously? Where the hell did you pull those numbers... If you remove 1% over 100 years you get something like 36.6% of the original amount not 10%
Maybe I missed some special financial deflationary calculation... or factor in relativity...
People still use quicktime? Why? Just why? Every website that has a quicktime video, I just go straight to youtube and search for the equivalent. This is mainly due to the fact that the quicktime plugin traditionally hasn't been able to automatically install. You have to actually go to their website and install some adware filled crap that will never leave your system tray alone.
Every chip since like 3 years ago is 64 bit. Its about time the OS followed suit. Pure 64bit environment and emulate whatever needs 32,16,8? More meat, Less bloat. Driver support. Play mp3s without scanning every device in my system 300000times per second. Actually just take all DRM supporting functions out. Whats bigger MS or the RIAA? Stop supporting the real pirates MS! Yahoo sends journalists to Jail, MS turns out computers into cripples.
It is theft and scam. I hope Best Buy tracks down the assholes that are doing this and pass the "costs" down on them + a nice visit to police station in cuffs + nice fine and restitution.
This is actually a case *for* unique ids like RFID to be implemented everywhere. At least that way you would be able to track down the asshole that stole from Best Buy and the guy in question. Now it is still possible, but will take time. I'm sick and tired that Best Buy should "eat it". The thief should be the one that eats the damn tiles.
As for the guy that ended up with garbage (if BestBuy didn't do the right thing, as they didn't seem to),
1. file a police report
2. chargeback credit card
3. contact drive manufacturer and report that the drive in question was stolen -- this at least voids warranty on the drive
4. if new drive is not handed over by Best Buy (show them police report), add to the police report that they stole your new drive
5. if Best Buy continue to not hand over the drive, sue them for selling you a brick (small claims) + taking money for it + ALL your time you lost + court filing fees. Just do not exaggerate your time - judges don't like that.
Unfortunately, theft like this hits us all in the pocketbooks all the way from customers up to Best Buy shareholders.
As to parent, I don't know what "people" you hang around with that "do this all the time". Sounds like a bunch of assholes to me. This would require effort on behalf of Best Buy.
To re-iterate what the real problem was: the *majority* of people (sure one or two may have legit complaints) affected tried to buy the game for a discounted price, had their games de-activated, can get a refund and buy it properly now. For the few people affected, I don't think this is that big of a deal - don't be so cheap on a company that's offering 5 very awesome games for the price of one, and one that even offered a discount beforehand. Hahahahah.... Refund... Hahahaha.
WRONG! The company in question has to, at the very least, disclose those licensing restrictions!
Yeah... good thing they did then, jackass. It's on the fucking box, for god sake. If these idiots didn't know, it's their own damn fault. Not so... Once again this does not only affect the Orange Box. I have a HL2 Game of the year box. No such region locking notes on it. All it says is "For sale in Thailand only" Yeah, I bought it from Thailand... And I get the same bullshit error message now as all of the damn Orange Box boys, only 9 months after I purchased it.
I bought my Half Life 2 game of the year edition from ebay 9months ago. (Australian here) I have the box in front of me. I got it cheap and it worked for 9 months.
When the orange box came out, i could no longer play Half Life 2, Counterstrike or any other games that came on the box. 9 months later? WHat kind of BS retroactive customer punishment is that. Steam has way too much reckless power to do something as stupid as this and expect not to get punished. I have submitted a complaint to the ACCC (Consumer protection) and they have said that they have received numerous complaints and may be launching an investigation soon. (if you live in Australia submit your complaint to the ACC too please)
And what does the valve customer support say? Get a refund from the seller? How the hell can I get a refund 9 months on from an ebay seller! Are they insane? Who thinks of these reasons? Who can I call and abuse!
Modern civilization is truly doomed if people are willing to abandon their principals for the sake of a fucking video game.
Whats really sad is that people will... If people are willing to sell their souls for better video games then who are we to complain when all our games become untradable. Pay full price for a game, finish it, but cant pass it on... Its just a joke now for console users but soon it might become a reality. ITs bullshit. Stop paying them to screw us.
Have you ever wanted to post something but you really CBF... Ill make a lame attempt.
I told my partner that taking my last name in marriage was meaningful because it was belonging and that the reason that Chinese people traditionally don't take their husbands is that they weren't worthy of the mans name... Only his blood, and thereby the children of her, were worthy of his name.
The argument didn't work, but eventually she agreed anyways.
Just like life on earth the rovers need to evolve... Maybe they could grow a shell... THat way they could hide during the dust storms, and then come out all clean. Or maybe they could just grow solar cell wipers

Sorry I couldn't see your spelling mistakes through the total lack of layout to any of your posts.
Giant walls of text aren't pleasant to read and impair comprehension of your points.
Oblig.
Please correct article. Some manufacturers still allow users to "upgrade" from Vista to XP Pro.
