I switched from Comcast to BellSouth about 6 months ago and haven't looked back. Sure it's a bit slower, but honestly? It actually works. I've had almost zero downtime with it, as opposed to when I was with Comcast and had about 60% packet loss 90% of the time. No joke. It was an 8 year old modem, and Comcast refused to replace it. They couldn't believe the modem could possibly be going bad. They skipped out on all four appointments I made for them to come out, didn't even show up.

I called up BellSouth, got it all set up, and it's been wonderful. They had the package out to me within 4 days after signing up. My modem got a bit funky - the ethernet jack broke when I was moving it. I called them up, they had a new one out the next day. I get very consistent download speeds, it isn't like with Comcast when I'd get slower than 56k dialup speeds at night, if it worked at all... I easily had 2 second or higher ping times to just about everything.

BellSouth's tech support is much much better too, you call up and you can actually get yourself transferred to someone who knows what they're doing. After the initial install I had a few problems - I missed a filter on our DirectTV unit... They actually put me directly on the phone with the line tech who got it resolved in a very short amount of time.

Go for it, you won't regret it. Just my two cents!

Basically what I have at the house is a very scaled down version of what we set up at UM. Since it's a University with many departments, the SAs from each have to have their own restricted access to whatever devices they control, and manage those... It has full ACLs, groups, and can control pretty much every network management device.

Basically, the captive portal tells them they aren't registered, then they register with their name and how long they want access for. It'll automatically grant them access, and it will email me right away. If I have no idea who it is, I can log in and disable their access to the Internet and prevent them from getting an IP address from my DHCP server, all from a convenient web interface I wrote. I also have a packet filter in place that disables people if they try to use any form of P2P, unless specifically allowed. This way I can leave the access points totally open, and if someone misbehaves, I simply hit the disable button, and they're completely offline one minute later.

If you're in a room and kill someone and there's someone in the next room, chances are the person in the next room will hear it - provided you don't kill them in one hit... If they don't scream, how can anyone know? It's a bit more realistic.

I've only had one crash in Oblivion, which I believe was due to some .ini tweaks I made to boost FPS a bit. In general it's a much more polished product than Morrowind was. Also, for the record, Morrowind crashed at least once every session I played it.

Once one game protected by a certain scheme is cracked, the rest are pretty simple to crack since you just have to look for the same patterns, provided it's the same version of the protection scheme.

I may be wrong about this, but it's what I've seen so far. I haven't downloaded any StarForce protected games so I don't know for sure how the pirated copies work, but the fact that there are pirated copies avaliable says that there is some way to run them without the disc, and without really bad hassles.

  24. Re:"spring back from the brink of nonexistence?" on The Oblivion of Western RPGs · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've played both Morrowind and Oblivion, and I have to say... Morrowind really was lacking in a lot of areaa. The world was static, the combat sucked, and the quests and everything were buggy as hell.

Oblivion REALLY addressed all of that. The NPCs have their own lives, interact with each other, and everything. I understand why you don't like Western RPGs. I'm also really picky about roleplaying games and games in general. I haven't really gotten into many of the Eastern games, and I haven't been able to get into most of the Western games. Hell, I haven't really gotten into many games at all. There has to be something really special about it for me to truly enjoy it.

Honestly, Morrowind got old about 6 hours into the game, and then I started modding it to make it more fun. I don't like games that force me into one way of playing the game in order to tell its story. I also can't stand games where I have a bunch of characters who line up and fight turn by turn; I like more action and direct control, but that's again personal preference. I'd at least give Oblivion a shot, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. It's very open ended, and the story telling and gameplay is very well done. The AI system is really cool, just to digress a bit. It's task oriented, and bases decisions on what type of character the specific NPC is. There's very little in the way of scripted events, aside from questlines. Even then, the script only tells the NPC what his goal is, not how to accomplish it. I've seen a person in a town leave his house, lock the door, exit the gate and get on his horse to go out hunting on more than one occasion. Anyway, I'll stop rambling about the AI.

I'm about 30 hours into playing around with Oblivion right now, and yeah, it's amazing. Of course it's just my personal opinion. Also, in case you're wondering, I'm not affiliated with Bethsoft at all, though I do know the CEO of the company, he's a family friend. I honestly think it's the most amazing game I've played to date. You may or may not agree with me, but don't go saying a game is horrible before you've even tried it - that's very closed minded. Just play the intro tutorial at a friend's house some time. It'll give you a very basic idea of how the game works, and you just might like it. =)
